Safety Precautions 11 Battery, Battery Charger Other Warnings • Use only the recommended battery. • Do not place the battery near or in direct flame. • Do not let the battery come into cont act with water (e.g. sea water) or othe r liquids. • Do not attempt to disassemble, alter or apply heat to the battery.
Safety Precautions 12 • Do not allow dirt or metal objects (such as pins or keys) to contact the charg er terminals or plug. This could result in fire, electrical shock or other damage. • When using the separately sold optional lenses, be sure to attach them firm ly.
13 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view, erase and print the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view movies and transfer images to a computer.
14 Use the incl uded charger to ch arge the batter y. The battery is not charge d at time of pu rchase. Be su re to charge th e battery before use. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. ● Align the S marks on the battery and charger, t hen insert the batt ery by slidi ng it in and down .
Charging the Battery 15 Approximate Number of Shots That Can Be Taken • The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Ima ging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, the number of shots that can be take n may be less than mentioned above.
16 Insert the s upplied batte ry and a comme rcially availa ble memory card into the camera. Check the card’s write-protect tab. ● If the memory card has a write-protect ta b, you will not be able to reco rd images if the tab is in the loc ked position.

Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 18 Approximate Number of Shots per Memory Card • Values are based on the default settings. • The number of shots that can be taken will vary depending on camera s ettings, the subject and the memory card used.
19 You can use the LCD monitor to compose pictur es before shooting, oper ate menus or play back images. You can freel y adjust the angle and orientation of the LCD monitor to suit your shooting conditions. Open the LCD monitor. Rotate the LCD monitor.
20 The Date/Time se ttings screen will appear the first time the c amera is turned on. Since th e dates and times re corded into yo ur images are ba sed on these settings, b e sure to set them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the powe r button. X The Date/Time screen will appe ar.
Setting the Date and Time 21 Changing the Date and Time You can change the current da te and time sett ings. Display the menu. ● Press the n butt on. 23 Before you us e a new memory card or one that has been u sed in other devices, y ou should for mat the card with this came ra. Formattin g (initializ ing) a memory card e rases all dat a on the memory card. As you cannot retrieve the erased data, exe rcise adequa te caution be fore formatting the memory card.
24 The shutter button has two stops. To take images that ar e in focus, be s ure to first pre ss the shut ter button lig htly (halfwa y) to focus, then take th e shot. Press halfway (lightly to the first stop). X The camera auto matically foc uses and selects the ne cessary setti ngs for shooting, such as t he bright ness.

60 The ISO speed wi ll be set auto matically betw een ISO320 and ISO1 2800. Depending o n the scene, the ISO speed will be set hi gher and the shutter speed fast er than in A mode so that yo u can shoot in dark places with reduced camer a shake and subj ect blur.
61 Use the vi ewfinder (p. 43) to shoo t. The camer a continuo usly adjusts the focus and exposure on the subjec t in the viewf inder, so yo u never miss a great shot. Set the camera to 8 mode. ● Set the mode dial to 8 . X The screen in St ep 2 displays.

Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 65 Digital Tele-Converter The focal le ngth of the le ns can be increa sed by an equiva lent of 1.4x or 2.3x. This enables a faster shutter speed and l ess chance of camera sha ke than the zoo m (including digital zoom) us ed by itself at t he same zoom factor.
