5 Important Safety In structi ons To ensure the safe operation of this scanner, be sure to read the safety warnings and precautions des cribed below. Installat ion Locat ion The performance of this s canner is affected by the enviro nment in which it is installed.
6 Power Supp ly ● Connect only to a power outlet of the rated voltage and power supply frequency (either 120 V, 60 Hz or 220-240 V, 50/60 H z, depending on your region). ● Do not connect other electrical equipment to the same power outlet to which the scanner is connected.
7 Moving the Scan ner ● Before mov ing the scanner, m ake sure to turn the po wer switch OFF, and discon nect the power plug from the p ower outlet. ● When moving the scanner, make sure to lock the lock switch and carry the scanner w ith both hands so as not to drop it.
8 CAUTION ● Do not install the scanner on a surf ace that is unstable, tilted, or in an area subject to excessive v ibrations, as this m ay cause t he scanner to fall, resulting in personal injury or damage t o the scanner. ● Do not block the ventilation openings.
9 Features of t he DR-2020U Doc ument Scan ner The main features of the DR-2020U document scanner are de scribed below. ● Multiple Methods for Documen ts Feeding Depending on the type of documen t you intend to scan, you c an use the feeder, flatbed, or business ca rd feeder.

C Docum ent Feed Tr ay Open this when placing documents into t he feeder. D Docum ent Eject Tray Documents scanned th rough the feeder are ejected here.
11 Operation Panel A Job Buttons Specific jobs are assigned to these buttons. Scanning will start when any of these buttons are pressed. The scanned images will be processed as follows for ea ch button: COPY: Prints scanned images to a specified print er.
12 Error Displays Rear A USB Connector Connect the supplied USB c able (or Hi-Speed USB 2.0 com patible cable) here. B ADF Connector CAUTION Never disconnect th e ADF con nector. The feeder will stop functioning if the ADF connector is d isconnected. C Power Connector Connect the supplied AC adapter here.
13 Feeding Methods There are three feeding methods (feeder, flatbed, business card feeder) for scanning documents with this scanner. The types of documents that can be scanned with each method are as follows.
14 • Document s with curled edges may result in folds and paper jams. Make sure to straighten out the curls before loading documents in the scanner. • Han dle paper edges with care, and be careful not to cut your fingers when loading d ocuments.
15 Placing Do cuments Placing Docum ents in to the Feed er 1 Fan the pag es of the docum ent to be sca nned, and load the docum ent into th e feeder with the scanning si de faci ng up . 2 Adjust the docume nt guides to the edges of the docume nt. IMPORTANT • Close the business ca rd feeder.
16 Placin g Car ds into th e Busi ness Card Feeder 1 Open t he busines s card feed er. 2 Hold down th e lever ( A ) on the side of the bus iness ca rd feeder , and place the cards into th e feeder w ith the scanni ng side fac ing up. Fully ins ert the card s until they reach th e stopper s ( B ) at the back of the feeder.
17 Supplied Softwar e Use the following software supplied wit h the scanner to scan doc uments. Select which software to use based on your intended pur pose. Use this when you want to start scann ing merely by pressing a button on the scanner. Easily scan without computer operations.
18 Scanning with Ca ptureOnTouch What is Capt ureOnTou ch? CaptureOnTouch is a scanning applicatio n that allows you to s can documents using easy-to-fo llow on-screen instructions. * [Attach to E-mail] in [S can First], and [Sen d by E -mail] in [Sele ct Scan Job ].
19 Scanning w ith the Job Butto ns [Scan First] and [Select Scan Job] are pre-assigned to the three job buttons on the operation panel, and you can start scanning by pressing one of buttons when “S can First” appears on the display panel.
20 Scan Fi rst Operation Fl ow 1 Place the doc umen t in the sca nner (See p. 15) . 2 Click the [ Scan Fi rst] tab. The main s creen for [Sc an First] appears. 3 Click [Scan ner setting ] to displ ay the [Sca nner sett ing] dialog box, a nd co nfigure t he s canner settings.
21 5 Specify the output method. 6 Configure settings for the output method, and click the output button t o output the sca nned images . The name of the output button differs depending on the select ed output method. If yo u select [Save to f older] for the output m ethod, for example, the output button appears as [ Save].
22 Output Method Settings CaptureOnTouch provides four output me thods for pr ocessing sc anned images. The output settings that appear differ depending on t he output method selected. [Save to fold er] [Print] Save scanned images to a specified folder.
23 Starting [Scan Fi rst] with t he START Button Under default settings, [Scan First] is assigned to t he START button on the operation panel. When “Ready” appear s on the display panel, press the STA RT button after placing your document in the scanner.
24 Select Scan Job Operation Fl ow Registering/Editing Jobs In CaptureOnTouch, y ou can re gister up to 10 jobs for use w ith [Select Scan Job]. 1 Click the [ Select Sc an Job] tab. The main s creen for [Select S can Job] appea rs. 2 Clic k th e [R eg ist er n ew jo b] butt on .
25 [Output s ettings ] tab Configure settings for the output method. The items that app ear in this tab differ depending on t he [Output method] selected. [File settings] tab This tab appears w hen [Send by E -mail] is selected in the [Output method] list box.
26 4 Click the [ OK] button . The job is registered according to the configured settings and appears in the job list. To confirm the settings of a r egistered job or to c hange the settings, click the [Job list/edit] button. Selecting Scan Jobs 1 Place the docu ment in the scanner (Se e p.
27 4 Click the [Start] button. The docum ent is scanned. While scanning is in progress, the number of pages scanned is d isplayed in addition to the scanner set ti ngs. When all the pages of the document are scanned, the s canned images are output according to th e registered job settings, and the completion screen appears.
28 Troubleshooting This section des cribes the problems that m ay occur while using the scanner and how to resolve t hem. It you cannot resolve a problem, contact your lo cal authorized Ca non dealer or your service representative. Common Pro blems an d Solu tions Problem 1 The scanner will not turn on.
29 Probl em 8 Each scanned image of a multi-p age document is saved as a separate d ocument. Solutions With CaptureOnTouch, you can scan multiple pages into one image fil e when TIFF or PDF file format is selected.
30 Clear ing a Pa per Jam If a paper jam occurs while scanning from t he feeder, an error message appears on the display panel. Follow the procedure below to clear the jam. CAUTION Be careful not to cut your f ingers on the edges of the paper when clearing the paper jam.

32 Appendix Cleani ng the Roll er Un it and Separati on Pa d If streaks appear in scanned images, o r if scanned d ocuments become dirty, the r oller unit and se paration pad may b e dirty. Be sure to clean them regularly. Hint The roller unit and separation pad are located inside the feeder cover.
33 4 Grasp both sides of the separation pad with your fingers, and re move t he sepa ration p ad. 5 Use a cloth damp ened with water and thoroughly wrung out to wip e the roller s and sep aration pad clean. Attaching the Roller Unit and Separati on Pad 1 Attach th e separat ion pad.
34 3 Lower the lock lever to s ecure the roller unit into place. You can lo wer the lock lever smo othly by gent ly bending it inward. 4 Close th e feeder co ver and document feed tray.
