10 • Before using the product, please ensure that you read the safety precautions described below. Always ensure that the product is used correctly. • The safety precautions noted on the following pages are intended to prevent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipment.
Safety Precautions 11 • Turn the camera off in places where camera use is prohibited. The electromagnetic waves emitted by the camera may interfere with the o peration of electronic instruments and other devices.
Safety Precautions 12 • In regular use, small amounts of smoke may be emitted from the flash. This is due to the h igh intensity of the flash burn ing dust and foreign materials st uck to the front of the unit. Please use a cot ton swab to remove dirt, dust or other foreign matter from the flash to prevent heat build-up and damage to the unit.
13 Prepare for shooting as fol lows. Attach the strap. Attach the included s trap to the camera as shown. On the other si de of the camera, attach the strap the s ame way. Attach the lens cap to the strap. Remove the le ns cap from the lens an d attach the lens cap c ord to the s trap.
Initial Preparations 14 Before use , charge th e battery wit h the inclu ded charge r. Be sure to charge the battery initially, b ecause the camera is not sold with the battery ch arged. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. After alignin g the o marks on the batter y and charger, ins ert the battery by push ing it in ( ) and down ( ).
Initial Preparations 15 Insert the i ncluded ba ttery and a memory card (sold sepa rately). Note that befor e using a new memory card (or a memory card fo rmatted in another devi ce), you should format the memory card with this camera (p. 175). Check the card’s write-protect tab.
Initial Preparations 16 If you ins ert the batt ery facing the wrong wa y, cannot be loc ked into the cor rect position . Always confi rm that the batt ery is facing t he right way and locks wh en inserted . Insert the memory card. Insert the memor y card facing as show n until it clicks int o the locked p osition.
Initial Preparations 17 Prepare the screen fo r use. Open the scree n ( ) and rotat e it toward the lens 180° ( ). Close the scr een in this or ientation ( ). You can adjust the angle and orientation o f the screen as ne eded, to suit sh ooting conditions .
Initial Preparations 18 A screen for se tting the dat e and time is di splayed the f irst time you tur n the camera on. Be su re to specify t he date and time , which is the ba sis for dates and times ad ded to you r images. Turn the camera on. Press the ON/O FF button.
Initial Preparations 19 Adjust the date and ti me as follows. Access the camera menu. Press the n button. Choose [Date/Time]. Move the zo om lever to c hoose the 3 tab. Press the op buttons or tur n the 7 dial to choose [Date/Time ], and then p ress the m button.
Initial Preparations 20 The display language can be changed as neede d. Enter Playback mode. Press the 1 button. Access the setting screen. Press and hol d the m button, and then immediately pr ess the n button. Set the disp lay languag e. Press the opqr buttons or turn the 7 dial to choose a l anguage, and then press the m button.

Trying the Camera Out 22 Shoot. Shooting Still Images Focus. Press the shutter but ton lightly, halfway down. The camer a beeps twice af ter focusing, a nd AF frame s are disp layed to indicate im age areas in focu s. If [Raise the f lash] appear s on the screen , move the switch to raise the fla sh.
Trying the Camera Out 23 Shooting Movies Start shooting. If the flash i s already up, push it down with your fin ger, into the camer a. Press the movie bu tton. The camera beeps once as re cording be gins, and [ Re c] is displayed w ith the elapsed time .
Trying the Camera Out 24 After shoot ing images or movies, you can v iew them on the sc reen as follow s. Enter Playback mode. Press the 1 button. Your last s hot is disp layed. Browse thro ugh your i mages. To view the previous ima ge, pres s the q button or t urn the 7 dial co unterclock wise.
Trying the Camera Out 25 Play movies. Press the m button to access the movie control panel, choose (either press the qr buttons or turn the 7 dial), an d then press the m button again. Playback now begins, and after the movie is finished, is displ ayed.
