5 Configuring the Access Point This section describes how to connect the access point to a wireless LAN controller . Because the configuration process takes plac e on the controller , see the Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Configuration Guide for additional information.
Access points must be discovered by a controller before they can become a n active part of the network. The 3502P access point supports these controller discovery processes: • Layer 3 CAPW AP disc.
Note Y ou can mount the access point above a suspended cei ling but you must purchase addition al mounti ng hardware : See “Mou nting the Acc ess Point ” section on page 12 for additional information.
Pre-Installation Configuration Setup Figure 3 shows the pre-installation configuration setup. Figure 3 Pr e-Inst allation Configuration Setup Follow these steps to perform the pre-installa tion configuration. Step 1 Make sure that the Cisco wireless LAN controller DS port is connected to the network.
e. CAPW AP UDP ports must not be blocked in the network. f. The access point must be able to find the IP address of the controller . This can be accomplished using DHCP , DNS, or IP subnet broadcast. This guide describes the DHCP method to convey the controller IP addres s.
c. If the access point shuts down, check the power source. d. After the access point finds the Cisco wireless LAN controller, it attempts to download the new operating system code if the access point code version differs from the Cisco wireless LAN controller code version.
6 Mounting the Access Point Cisco Aironet 3502P access points can be mounted in several con figurations, including on a suspended ceiling, on a hard ceiling or wall, on an elecrtical or network box, and above a suspended ceiling.

Troubleshooting the Ac cess Point Join Process Access points can fail to join a controller for many reasons: a R ADIUS auth orization is pending; self-signed certificat es are not enabled on the cont roller; the access point’ s and controller’ s regulatory domains don’ t match, and so on.
• The access point is still connected to the same cont roller , and the global syslog server IP address configuration on the controller has been changed using the config ap syslog host global syslog_server_ IP_address command. In this case, the controller sends the new global syslog server IP address to the access point.
