Getting Star ted 1–1 1 Setting Up the Notebook Setting Up the Har dware T o set up the notebook for the f irst time, you will need the notebook, the A C Adapter 1 , the po wer cord 2 , and the battery pack 3 .
1–2 Getting Star ted Setting Up the Notebook Installing the Battery P ack T o install the battery pack: 1. Place the notebook upside do wn on a flat surface, preferably on top of a clean cloth. 2. Slide the battery pack 1 into the battery compartment until it clicks into place.

When the notebook is on, the po wer/standby light 2 turns on, and you are prompted to begin softw are setup. If the notebook does not turn on, see Chapter 3, “T rou blesho oting, ” in this guide.

Before responding to the prompt and proceeding through the online instructions, read the follo wing caution and other installation information.

3–2 Getting Star ted T roubleshooting Quic k Solutions Checklist Is the Notebook Receiving P o wer? If the A C Adapter light is of f and the notebook cannot be turned on, adequate po wer may not be av ailable to the notebook.
T roubleshooting Getting Star ted 3–3 Is the Notebook T urned On? If the po wer/standby 1 light is of f, the notebook may not be turned on. T o turn on the notebook, briefly press the power b utton 2 . If the po wer/standby light is on, the notebook is turned on.
3–4 Getting Star ted T roubleshooting Is the Notebook Overheated? It is normal for the notebook to feel warm to the touch while it is in use. But if the notebook feels extr emely warm, it may be ov erheating because a vent is blocked. Ov erheating can cause the notebook to become unresponsi ve.
T roubleshooting Getting Star ted 3–5 Is an External Device Not W orking? If an external de vice does not function as expected: ■ T urn on the de vice as instructed in the device documentation.
3–6 Getting Star ted T roubleshooting Is Software Functioning Abnormally? If your software becomes unresponsi ve or seems abnormal: ■ Restart the notebook. ■ Run a virus scan. When you use the notebook for email, network, or Internet access, you expose the notebook to computer viruses.
T roubleshooting Getting Star ted 3–7 Contacting Compaq If the troubleshooting suggestions earlier in this chapter hav e not helped you solve the problem, you may need to contact Compaq. ■ If the notebook is connected to the Internet, visit the Compaq W eb site.
