3 Safety Precautions Safety Precautions Please read the safety warnings and cautions prov ided in this manual to ensure that you use the printer safely .
4 Safety Precautions Maintaining the printer Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the printer. There are no user serviceable parts inside the printer . The printer contains high-voltage components. Never attempt any maintenance procedure not described in this guide.
5 Safety Precautions FINE Cartridges (Ink Cartridges) Keep FINE Cartridges (Ink Cartridges) out of the reach of children. In case ink is accidentally licked or swallowed, rinse out mouth or give one or two glasses of water to drink. If irritation or discomfort occurs, obtain medical advice immediately .
6 Before Using the Printer Before Using the Printer Included Items Check that all the following items are in the box . If anything is missing or damaged, contact your Canon Service representative.
7 Before Using the Printer T urning off the Prin ter 1 T o turn off the printer , press the Power button. When the Pow er lamp stops flashing, the printer is turned off . This takes a few seconds or as long as around 15 seconds. Import ant When turning off the printer Follow the proc edure below to turn of f the printer .
8 Before Using the Printer Loading Printing Paper This section describes how to load printing paper in the Rear Tray . Using S pecialty Media Canon recommends that you use Canon genuine media to ensure optimal print qua lity .
9 Before Using the Printer Paper Handling z Recommended Paper and Requirements *1 Paper with a Mode l Number is Canon specialty media. R efer to the instruction manual supplied with the paper for detailed informat ion on the printable side and notes on handling paper .
10 Before Using the Printer z Media T ypes Y ou Cannot Use Do not use the following types of paper . Usi ng such paper will not only produce unsatisfactory results, but can also cause the printer to jam or malfunction.
11 Before Using the Printer Loading Paper 1 Flatten the four corners of the paper before loading it. Import ant z Y ou cann ot print on post cards affix ed with phot os or stickers. z Always lo ad paper in p ortrait orientation (A) . Loading paper in la ndscape ori entation (B) can cause the paper to be jammed.
12 Before Using the Printer 2 Prepare to load paper . (1) Open the Paper Support. (2) Open the Paper Output Tr ay fully . If it is not opened fully , an error may occur . (3) Extend the Output Tray Extension. (4) Adjust the position of the Paper Thickness Lever .
13 Before Using the Printer Loading Envelopes Use either European DL or US Comm. Env . #10-sized e nvelope. With proper printer driver settings, the a ddress will be printed according to the direction of envelope. 1 Prepare the envelopes. z Press down on all four corners and edges of the envelop es to flatten them.
14 Before Using the Printer 2 Load the envelop es. (1) Load the envelope against the right side of the Rear Tray . Load with the address side facing UP and the rear flaps DOWN on the left. Up to 5 envelopes can be loaded at once. (2) Pinch the Paper Guide and slide it against the left side of the envelope.
15 Before Using the Printer Loading Small-Sized Paper Y ou can use 4" x 6" / 10 1.6 x 152.4 mm, 5" x 7" / 127.0 x 177 .8 mm, and Credit card-sized papers. 1 Load the paper . (1) Load the small-sized paper against the right side of the Rear T ray with the print side facing UP .
16 Printing from Your Computer Printing from Y our Computer This section describes the procedure for basic printing. Printing with Windows 1 T urn on the printer and load the paper in the printer . For details on how to load the paper , see “Loading Printing Paper” on page 8.

18 Routine Maintenance Routine Maintenance When Printing Becomes Fain t or Colors Are Incorrect When printing becomes faint or colors are incorre ct, the print head nozzles on FINE Cartridges are probably clogged. Print the nozzle check pattern to confir m the condition of the nozzles and then perform Print Head Cleaning.
19 Routine Main tenance Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern Print the nozzle check pattern to determine whether the ink ejects properly from the print head nozzles. 1 Make sure that the printer is on and then load a sheet of A4 or Letter-size d plain paper in the Rear T ray .
20 Routine Maintenance 1 Make sure that the printer is on and then load a sheet of A4 or Letter-size d plain paper in the Rear T ray . 2 Open the Paper Output Tray , and then extend the Output T ray Extensio n. Set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left.
21 Routine Main tenance Examining the Nozzle Check Pattern Examine the nozzle check pattern, and perform cleaning if necessary . 1 Check the nozzle check pattern you printed. (1) If lines of this pattern are missing, the Black print head nozzle needs cleaning.
22 Routine Maintenance 2 T ake the approp riate action. z When cleaning is necessary Click Cleaning , and then go to step 4-(3) of the Windows or Macintosh Print H ead Cleaning procedure, depending on your platform . See “Print Head Cleaning” on page 22.
23 Routine Main tenance 4 S tart Print Head Cleaning. (1) Click the Maintenance tab. (2) Click Cleaning . Print Head Cleaning starts when the Power lamp starts flashing green. Do not perform any other operations until Pr int Head Cleaning finishes. This takes about 60 seconds.
24 Routine Maintenance If you click Cleaning on the Pattern Check dialog box that is displayed after printing the nozzle check pattern, go to step 4-(3). 1 Make sure that the printer is on. 2 Open the Paper Output Tray and extend the Output T ray Extension.
25 Routine Main tenance Print Head Deep Cleaning If print quality does not impr ove by standard Print Head Cleaning, try Print Head Deep Cleaning, which is a more powerful process. Note that cl eaning the Print Hea d causes used ink to be absorbed in the ink absorber .

27 Routine Main tenance Aligning the Print Head If ruled lines are printed misaligned or print result s are otherwise unsatisfactory , adjust the print head position. 1 Make sure that the printer is on and then load a sheet of A4 or Letter-size d plain paper in the Rear T ray .

(1) Check the printed patterns and select the numb er of the pattern in column A that has the least noticeable streaks. (2) Repeat the procedure until you finish inputting the pattern number for column L, then click OK .

(1) Check the printed patterns and select the number of the pattern in column A that has the least noticeable streaks. (2) Repeat the procedure until yo u finish inputting the pattern number for column L, then click Send .

34 Routine Maintenance 1 Open the Paper Outpu t T ray . 2 Make sure that the printer is turned on, and then open the T op Cover . The FINE Cartridge Holder moves to the left. 3 Remove the empty FINE Cartridge. (1) Push down the FINE Cartridge. (2) Remove the FINE Cartridge.
35 Routine Main tenance 4 Prepare the replacem ent FINE cartridge. (1) Unpack a new FINE Cartridge and remove the orange protective tape (A) gently . 5 Install the FINE Cartridge.

47 Troubleshooting Printing Does Not S tart/Print ing Is Blurred/Colors Are Wrong/S traight Lines Are Misaligned White Str eaks Cause Action The media is loaded with the wrong side facing upwards. When using paper with one printable surface, make sure the paper is loaded with the printable side facing up.
48 Troubleshooting Printed Paper Curls or Has Ink Blot s Printed Surface Is Scratched/Paper Is Smudge d Cause Action Paper is too thin. When printing data with high color saturation such as photographs or imag es in deep color , we recommend using Photo Paper Pro or other Canon specialty paper .
49 Troubleshooting Colors Are Uneven or Str eaked Paper is curled. For Plain Paper Turn the p aper over and reload it to print on the other side. Leaving the paper loaded in the Rear Tray for a long time may cause the paper to curl. If this happens, load the paper with the other side facing up.
50 Troubleshooting Printer Does Not S tart Cause Action The printer is not powered on. / The power plug is not connected. Make sure that the power plug is securely plugged into the Power Cord Connector of the printer. Plug the power plug all the way in, since it may be difficult to plug.
51 Troubleshooting Paper Does Not Feed Properly Cause Action Printing on inappropriate type of paper . Check to see if the paper you are printing on is not too thick or curled. See “Paper Handling” on page 9 to make sure that the paper you are using is suitable.
52 Troubleshooting Paper Jams Important If you need to turn of f the printer to remo ve jammed pape r during printing, refer to “Printing from Y our Computer” i n the User's Guide on-screen manual to cance l print jobs before turning of f the printer .
53 Troubleshooting Alarm Lamp Flashes Orange Alarm Lamp Flashes Orange When a printer error occurs, the Alarm lamp flashes orange as shown below . The number of flashes indicates the type of error that has oc curred. Count the flashes and take the appropriate action to correct the error .
54 Troubleshooting Power Lamp Flashes Green and Alarm Lamp Flashes Ora nge Alternately Disconnect the printer cable from the printer, turn the printer of f, and then unplug the printer from the power supply . Plug the printer b ack in and turn the printer back on after leaving it for one minute or more.
