4 I-4. Switch The EW -7438AC includes a hardware slide switch on the underside of the device whic h can switch between normal, green mod e and off as shown in the ta bl e below. “Wi - Fi powe r” refers to the strength of the exten der’s wireless radio sig nal .
5 I-5. WPS Setup The WPS button is a qu ick and easy method to establish a secure conne ction between your EW - 7438AC and wirele ss router/access p oint .
6 I-6. Reset to Factory D efault Settings If you experience problems wit h your extender or if you want to change t he extender to a diffe rent operating mode, you can reset the device bac k to its factory settings. This resets all settings ba ck to default.
7 I-7. Safety Infor mation In order to ensure the saf e operation of the device and its users, pleas e read and act in accordance with the fol lowing safety inst ructions. 1. The device is desi gned for indoor use only; do n ot place it outdoors. 2. Do not place th e device in or near hot/humid pl aces, such as a kitchen or bathroom.
8 II . Installation The EW -7438 AC h as three different operati ng modes: Wi -Fi Extender The device connects wirelessly to your existing network and repeats the wireless signal. Location: The best location for your extender is roughl y in the middle between your existing wireless router/access point and the dead zone.
9 2. The white pow er LED will flash while the extender is sta rting up. The device is ready wh en the white po wer LED displays on . 3. Use a Wi- Fi device to connect t o the SSID “ EdimaxEXT.Setup ** ”. The last two ** characters are unique ac cording to your device.
10 4. Open a w eb browser and if you d o not automatically arrive at the “Get Started” screen shown below , enter the URL http:// edimaxext.setup and click “Get Started” to begin the setup process. If you cannot access http://edimaxext.setup , please make sure your computer is set to use a dynamic IP address.
11 6. Follow the on- screen inst ructions for your selected mode to complet e setup. You can con figure the product for 2.4 GHz and/or 5GHz Wi - Fi. Refer to the appropriat e chapter for each mode b elow if you need more help. 7. After setup, you ca n download the Ed iRange app by sca nning the QR c ode shown below.
12 II - 1. Wi -Fi Extender Mode 1. Please ensure your EW- 7438AC is wit hin Wi- Fi range of your existing wireless router. Click “Next” to continue. 2. Select whether t o use the 5GHz wireless frequ ency, 2.4GHz wireles s frequency or both. If you are n ot sure, select both and t hen click “Next ”.
13 3. Select whether t o enable Cross Ba nd technology. Thi s can help to maintain your router’s maxi mum speed capacity as the Wi -Fi sign al is extended. 4. Select the Wi-Fi n etwork name (SSID) which you wish to connect to for t he specified frequenc y and click “Next” to conti nue.
14 5. Enter your existing wireless network’s securit y key/password in the “Security Key” field and click “Next” to continue. Device SSID will be the SSID of your extender’s Wi -Fi. If using cross-band technology this will be 5GHz Wi- Fi for your router’s 2.
15 6. Wait a moment while the EW-74 38AC tests the wirel ess connection. 7. Select “Obtain a n IP address automat ically” or “Use the foll owing IP address” for your EW -7438AC. If you are using a static IP , enter the IP address, subnet m ask and default gat eway.
16 8. If you selected to use both 2.4GHz and 5GH z wir eless frequencies in step 2, then repeat ste ps 4 – 7 for the 5GHz wireless freque ncy. 9. A summary of yo ur configuration wi ll be displayed, as shown belo w. Check that all of t he details are corre ct and then click “Next ” to proceed.
17 10 . Please wait a moment until th e EW-7438AC is ready. 11 . A final congratulations screen wil l indicate that setu p is co mplete. You can now connect to t he device’s new SSID(s) w hich are shown on the screen then close the br owser window .

19 II -2. Acc ess Point Mode 1. Select “Access Po int” from the top menu and click “Next” . 2. Connect the net work port of you r EW -7438AC to the LAN port of you r existing router using an Ethernet cab le, then click “Next” . 3. Select whether t o use the 5GHz wireless frequ ency, 2.
20 4. Select “Obtain a n IP address automat ically” or “Use the foll owing IP address” for your EW -7438AC. If you are using a static IP , enter the IP address, subnet m ask and default gat eway. Click “Next” to proceed to th e next step. “Obtain an IP address automatically” is the recommended setting for most users.
21 6. A summary of yo ur configuration wi ll be displayed, as shown belo w. Check that all of t he details are correct and then cli ck “Next” to proceed. If you wish to backup the device’s settings, click “Backup this conf iguration” to save your current configur ation to a .
22 8. A final congratulations screen will indicat e that setup is complet e. You can now connect to th e device’s new SSID(s) whi ch are shown on the s creen then close the bro wser window. 9. The EW -7438AC is working and r eady for use. Refer t o V -2.
23 II -3. Wi -Fi Bridge Mode 1. Select “Wireless Bridge” from the t op menu and click “Next”. 2. Please ensure your EW -7438AC is wit hin Wi-Fi rang e of your existing wireless router. Click “Next” to continue. 3. Select the frequ ency (2.
24 4. Select the Wi-Fi n etwork name (SSID) which you wish to conne ct to and click “Next” to conti nue. If the Wi-Fi network you wish to connect to does not appear, try clicking “Refresh”. To connect to a hidden SSID, check the “Setup extender manually” box and enter the details manually on the next page, as shown below.
25 5. Enter your existing wireless network’s securit y key/password in the “Security Key” field and click “Next” to continue. 6. Wait a moment while the EW -743 8AC tests the wirel ess connection.
26 7. Select “Obtain a n IP address automat ically” or “Use the foll owing IP address” for your EW -7438AC. If you are using a static IP , enter the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway. Click “Next” to proceed to th e next step. “Obtain an IP address automatically” is the r ecommended setting for most users.
27 If you wish to backup the EW-7438AC ’s settings, click “Backup this configuration” to save your current configurati on to a .txt f ile. 9. Please wait a moment unti l the EW -7438AC is ready. 10 . A final congratulations screen wil l indicate that setup is co mplete.
28 11 . The EW -7438AC is working and ready for use. You can now c onnect the EW -7438AC to your netwo rk device using an Ethern et cable and connect to your ne twork as usual.
29 III . Browser Based Configuration Interface After you have setup the EW -7438A C as detail ed in II. Installation or th e included Quick Installation Guide , yo u can use the bro wser based configuration int erface to configure advanced sett ings. Please ensure that your computer is set to use a dynamic IP address.
30 3. You will arrive at the “ Status and Information ” scre en . Use the menu down the left side to navigate..
31 III-2. Save Settings 1. After you configure any sett ings, click the “Save Sett ings” button at the bottom of the screen to save your changes. The device needs to restart in order to bring any changes into effect. 2. Then, click “Click here to restart” in order to resta rt the device and bring the changes into ef fect.
32 III- 3. Main Menu The main menu di splays different opt ions depending on your device’s operating mode. Please refer to the f ollowing chapt ers for guidance on ea ch mode.
33 III-3-1. Status The “Status” page di splays basic system infor mation about the device, arranged i nto categories. Screenshots displayed are examples.
34 III-3-2. Setup Wizard You can run the set up wizard again to reconfigu re the basic settings of the device , or you ca n run a wizard to help you switch the device to a different operating mode.
35 3. Follow the on-sc reen wizard to setup your d evice in a different mode. Refer to II. Installation Step 3 onwards f or help if needed. If you don’t see the “Get Started” screen, try reconnecting to the edimaxEXT.setup ** SSID and go to http://edimaxext.
36 III-3-3 . LAN You can configure your L ocal Area Network (LAN ) on this page. Set t he device to automatical ly obtain an IP address from your router or assign an IP address manually. You can access the browser based configuration interface using the device’s IP address instead of using the URL http://edimaxext.
37 III-3-4 . 2.4GHz Wireless & 5GHz Wirel ess T he “2.4GHz Wirel ess” & “5GHz Wirel ess” menu allows you to configure SSI D and security setting s for your Wi -Fi networ k along with a gu est Wi-Fi networ k. WPS, access control (in access point mod e) and sch eduling functions can also be managed from here.
38 SSID will not be visibl e as an available Wi -Fi network to clients – clients must manual ly enter the SSID in o rder to connect. A hidden (disabled) SSID is t ypically more secu re than a visible (enabled) SSID. Enable Wireless Clients Isolation Check the box to e nable wireless clients isolation.
39 Wireless Security: Access Point Mode : Select an encryption t ype from the d rop-down menu: “WPA Pre - shared Key” is the recommended and most secure encryption type.
40 III-3-4-1-1. Disable Encryption is disab led and no passwo rd/key is required to conne ct to the EW -7438AC. Disabling wireless encryption is not recommended. When disabled, anybody within range can connect to your device’s SSID. Enable 802.1x Authentication Check the box to e nable the 802.
41 III-3-4-1-2. WEP WEP (Wired Equiv alent Privacy) is a basic encrypti on type. For a high er level of security consider using WPA encryption. Key Length Select 64-bit or 128-bi t.
42 III-3-4-1-3. WPA Pre-Share d Key WPA pre-shared key is th e recommended and most sec ure encryption type. WPA Unicast Cipher Suite Select from WPA (TKIP), WPA 2 (AES) or WPA2 Mixed. WPA2 (AES) is saf er than WPA (TKIP), but not supported by al l wireless clients.
43 III-3-4-1-4. WPA Radius WPA RADIUS is a combinat ion of WPA enc ryption and RADIUS user authentication. If you have a RADIUS authenticat ion server, you can authenticate the identity of every wi reless client against a user database. WPA Unicast Cipher Suite Select from WPA (TKIP), WPA 2 (AES) or WPA2 Mixed.
44 III-3-4-2. Guest You can setup an addi tional “Guest” Wi -Fi networ k so guest users can enjoy Wi -Fi conne ctivity without accessing your primary SSID. The “Guest” screen displays settings for your gue st Wi-F i network. The guest network is separate from your primary network.

46 II I-3-4- 3. WPS Wi -Fi Protected Setup is a simple way to estab lish connections betwe en WPS compatible devices. WPS can be activated on c ompatible devices by pushi ng a WPS button on th e device or from withi n the device’s firmware/configu ration interface.
47 Configure via Pus h Button Click “Start PBC” (Push -Button Confi guration) to activate WPS on t he access point. WPS will be active for 2 minutes. Co nfigure via Client PIN Code Enter the wireless client’s PI N code here and click “Start PIN” to acti vate PIN code WPS.
48 Client PC Select a PC name f rom the drop- down list and click “>>” to add ent er it into the blank field t o the right. Click “Refresh’ in t he drop -down menu to refresh the list of avail able MAC addresses. If the address you wish to a dd is not li sted, enter it manually.
49 III-3-4-5. Schedule When Cross-Band is enabled, wireless scheduling is reversed according to frequency. Your 2.4GHz schedule will apply to your extender’s 5GHz network and vice -versa. The schedule feature allows y ou to automate t he wireless radio to switch off at specified times.
50 1. Use the dropdo wn to select which day(s) to includ e in the schedule. Ch eck “Every Day” as a shortcut for an every day schedule. 2. Specify a start and end ti me (hour and minute) fo r the wireless off schedule using the drop -down m enu. Add Add the schedule t o the table of active schedules.
51 I II -3-5. Advanced Advanced features of t he EW -7438A C can be configured from th e “Advance d ” menu. III-3-5-1. 2.4GHz Wireless These settings are f or experienced users onl y. Please do not chang e any of the values on this page unless y ou are already familiar with t hese functions.
52 Data Rate Set the wireless da ta transfer rate. T he default is set to A uto. N Data Rate Set the data rate of 802.11n. The def ault is set to Auto. Channel Width Select wireless channel width (bandwidt h used by wireless sign als from th e dev ice) – the recommended value is Auto 20/40 MHz.
53 III-3-5-2. 5GHz Wireless These settings are for expe rienced users only. Pl ease do not change any of the values on this page unless y ou are already familiar with t hese functions. Fragment Thresho ld Set the Fragment threshold of the wi reless radio.
54 Preamble Type Set the wireless radio preamble type. The default value is “ Short Preamble”. CTS Protect Enabling thi s setting will reduce the chance of radio signal collisions betwe en 802.11b and 802.11g wireless acc ess points. It’s recommended to s et this option to “Aut o”.
55 III-3-6. Administration Various administrat ive functions can be acc essed from the “Administrat ion” menu. III-3-6-1. Wireless Range extender mode only You can adjust the level of wireless output power as a percenta ge. Depending on the size of your location and requi red coverage, you may not require 100% output power.
56 III-3-6-2. Time Zone Set Time Zone Select the time zone of you r country or region. Time Server Address The travel router s upports NTP (Netwo rk Time Protocol) for automatic time and date setup.
57 III-3-6-3. Password You can change the passwo rd used to login t o the browser -based configuration int erface here. It is advised to do so for security purposes . Please make a note of the new password. In the event that you forget the password and are unable to login to the browser based configuration interface, see I-6.
58 III-3-6-4. Backup/Restor e Backup Settings Click “ Save ” to save the cu rrent settings on you r computer as config. bin file. Restore Settings Click “ Browse ” to f ind a previously saved config.bin file and t hen click “ Upload ” to replace your current settings.
59 III-3-6-5. Upgrade The upgrade page displays the curre nt firmware version and al lows you to upgrade the syste m firmware to a more recent version .

61 IV . EdiRange App The EdiRange app is for range extender mode only. The EdiRange app is a free smartpho ne app from which you can manage t he extender’s functions an d check your local Wi -Fi envi ronment. Please ensure that your smartphone/tablet is connected to your extender’s Wi -Fi (SSID).
62 3. Enter the username and passwo rd (default username: admin defaul t password: 1234 ). The admin password is the same password used for the browser based configuration interface. It is recommended that you change the password from the default “1234”.

Parental Control The parental contr ol functi on is a guest Wi- Fi network (SSID) which can be used for children, and swi tched on or off remotely usi ng the Edi Range app independent from your extender’s pri mary Wi - Fi network. Select “ Second Wi - Fi Network” an d then enter a na me and password f or t he network.

95 V-1- 3. How to Find Your Network Security Key To find your netw ork security key, please follow the i nstructions approp riate for your operating system. If you are using Windows XP or earlier, please contact your ISP or router manufacturer to find your network security key.

111 V-4. Glossary Default Gateway ( Wireless bridge ): Every non-ac cess point IP devi ce needs to configure a defaul t gateway’s IP address. When the device sends out an IP packet, if the destina tion is not on the sam e netwo rk, the device has to s end the packet to its defa ult gateway, which will then send it out towards the destination.
