1 Product Overvi ew Thank you for using the ENH500. It is a powerful and enhanced business-class pr oduct with 4 multi-functions: Access P oint, Clie nt Bridge, WDS, and Client R outer . EnG enius’ E NH500 uses the latest wireless standa rd, 802.11n, which allo ws for faster wireless throughput.

1.2 Benef its Access Point Mode Use this feature to setup the access point’ s conf iguration information. It supports transmit power and channel adjustment s. Clients can ac cess the network with differ ent regulat or y set tings and automat ically change to the local r egulations.

1.6 Understanding the ENH500 LEDs The rear o f the ENH500 has two grou ps o f LEDs. One group, labeled INDICA T ORS , shows the status o f the device. The second group, LINK QU ALITY , shows the strength of the link between the ENH500 and the network .
2 Installation This chapter describes how to install the ENH500. Only experienced installation pro fessional s who are familiar with local building and safety codes and, wher ever applicable, are lic en sed by the appropriate gov ernment regulatory authorities should install the ENH500.

It is recommended to use ENH500s if you would like to utilize this functionalit y . 3.3 Client Bridge Mode In the Client Bridge Mode, the ENH500 functi ons lik e a wir eless client, connecting t o an Access P oint wirelessly and enabling Internet co nnectivity wher ever you want.
3.4 WDS Bridge M ode In the WDS Bridge Mode, the ENH500 can wirelessl y connect different local area networks by conf iguring each device’ s MAC addr ess and se curity settings. The WDS Bridge Mode can bridge up to four local wired networks together as one l ogical network .
WDS Bridge Mode is un like Access P o int Mode. APs linked by WDS are using the same wireless channel, and connecti ng excessive numbers o f APs on the same channel may result in lower throug hput. Please be aware to avoid loop connections; other wise enable the Spanning T ree Function.

4 Configuring Your C omputer for TCP/ IP This chapter describes how to conf igure the T CP/ IP set tings on a computer that will be used to conf igure the ENH500. Because the default oper ating mode is Client Bridge, an IP address will not be assigned to the computer/notebook .

4.2 Conf iguring Microso ft W indows V ista Use the following procedure to configure a computer running Microsoft Windows Vista with the default Windows interface. 1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click Control Panel , and t hen sele ct the Network and In tern et icon .
6. In the properties dialog box, click Use the fol lowing IP address: to configure your computer for Static TCP/IP. Enter an IP address (i.e. 1 92.168.1.10), the subnet mask of the ENH500, and the default gateway which is the ENH 500’s IP address, 19 2.

1. Pull down the Apple Menu, click System Preferences , and se lect Network . 2. Verify that the NIC connected to the ENH500 is selected in the Show field. 3. In the Configure field on the TCP/IP tab, select Manually . 4. Click Apply Now to apply your settings and cl ose the TCP/IP dialog box.
1. Open your web browser . 2. Enter IP 192.168.1.1 into your address bar . If you have changed the ENH500 L AN IP address, mak e sure you enter the correct IP Address. 3. Af ter successfully connecting t o the ENH500, a browser pop-up with a W indows Security notice will appear .
5 Status The Status section is on the navigation drop-down menu. Selecting it, yo u will then see three options: Main, Wireless Client List, and System Log. Each option is described i n detail below. 5.1 Save / Load This page allows viewing o f the modif i ed settings.
5.2 Main Cli ck on the Main link under the St atus drop-down menu or click Home fr om the top-right of the webpage. The status that is displayed corresponds with the operating mode that is selected.
5.3 W i reless Client List Cli ck on the Wirele ss Client List link under the Status drop-down menu. This page displays the list of Clients that are associated to the ENH500. The MAC addr esses and signal strength for each client is displayed. Click on the Refresh button to refresh the client list.
5.5 Connection S tatus Cli ck on the Connection Status link under the St atus drop-down menu. This page displays the current status of the netw ork, including Network Type, SSID, BSSID, Conn ection Status, Wireless Mode, Current Channel, Security, Data Ra te, Current noise level, and Signal strength.
6 System 6.1 Swit ching the Operation Mode The ENH500 suppor ts 4 modes: Access P oint, C lient Bridge, WDS Bridge, and Client R outer . In order t o switch be tween the operating modes, please go to System -> Operation mode. To b e g i n , c l i c k Sys t em P ro pe r t ie s under S y stem Section.
7 Wireless Configuratio n This section will guide yo u through all o f the wireless settings. Please re ad the instructions carefully . Inappropriate settings could lower the performance or affect the s tability o f your network . Before conti nuing, please make sur e you have chosen the correct operating mode.
W ireless Mode The wireles s mode sup por ts 802. 11a/n mixed oper ation. It is compatible with the most common wireless b ands. Channel HT Mode The default channel bandwidth is 40 MHz. A l arger channel can provide be tter transmit quality and speed.
SSID Specify the SSID for current pr of ile. VLAN ID Specify the VL AN tag for curr ent pro f ile. Suppressed SSID Place a c heck to hide the SSID . Client s will not be able to see the bro adca st SSID in Site Sur vey . Sta t i on S e p ar at i o n Select the Radio button to allo w / deny clients t o communicate with one another .
7.1.2 Client Bridge Mode W ireless Mode The wireles s mode sup por ts 802. 11a/n mixed oper ation. It is compatible with the most common known wireless b ands. SSID Specify the SSID if known. The SSID text bo x will be automatically f illed in when an AP in the Site Sur vey is selected.

7.2 W ireless Security Settings W i r eless Security Settings sect ion will guide you thr ough the Security conf igurations: WEP , WP A-PSK , WP A2-PSK, WP A-PSK Mix ed, WP A, WP A2, and WP A Mixed. We strongly reco mmend the use of WP A2-PSK as your security setting.

7.3 W i reless Adv anced Set tings Data Ra te Select Data Rate from the drop down list. Data rate will affect the eff iciency of the throughput. A lower dat a rate will allow for transmissions to travel longer dis tances. Tr a n s m i t P o w e r Select T ransmit P ower to incr eas e or decrease the transmit pow er .
The shor ter guar d inter val r esults in a higher pack et collision rate when the delay-spread o f the channel e xceeds the guar d inter val or if timing synchronization betw een the transmit ter and receiver is not precise. Aggreg ation Aggregation is to merge the typical size o f data’ s header to one data.
7.4 W i reless MA C Filter Wireless MAC Filter is used to Allow or Deny wi reless clients, by their MAC addresses, from accessing the network. You can manually a dd a MAC address to restrict the access permission’s of the client. The default setting is Disable Wireless MAC Filters.
7.5 WDS Link Set tings WDS Link Settings is used to establish a conn ection between Access P o int s without forgoing Access P oint functionality . APs with WDS functi onality can extend the wir eless coverage and al low L AN s to c omm uni cate wi th e ach oth er .
8 LAN Setup This section will guide y ou to setup th e Local Area Netw ork (L AN) settings 8.1 IP Settings This section is only av ailable for Non-R outer Mode . 9 Router Setti ngs This section is only av ailable for AP R outer Mode and Client R outer Mode . 9.1 W AN S ettings There ar e four different types o f W AN connection s: S tatic IP , DHCP , PPPoE, and PPTP . Please cont act your ISP to determine the connection type.
Internet Connection Ty p e Select Sta t i c I P to begin conf iguration of the S t atic IP connection. Account Name Specify Account Name that is provided by ISP . Domain Name Specify Domain Name that is provided by ISP . MTU Specif y the Maximum T ransmit Unit size.
9.1.2 DHCP (Dynam ic IP) Select DHCP as your W AN connection type to obt ain the IP address automat icall y . Y ou w ill need to enter Accou nt Name as your hos tname and DNS addresses (Optional) . Internet Connection T ype Select DHCP t o begin conf iguration of the DHCP connecti on.

9.1.3 PPPo E (P oint -to-P oint Protocol over E thernet) Select PPP oE as your WAN connection type if your ISP provides a Username and P assword. If the PPP oE is a DSL ser v ice, please remove the PPP oE s oftware fr om your computer as the so f tware is not necessar y with the use o f the ENH500.
Connect on Demand Select the Radio button to s pec if y the maximum idle time. The Inte rnet will disconn ect when it r eaches the maximum idle time; however , it will automatically connect when a client tries to access the network . Keep Al ive Select the Radio button to keep internet connection always on.
9.1.4 PPTP (P oint -to-P oint T unneling Protocol) Select PPTP as your W AN connection type if your ISP provides information r egarding: IP Addr ess, S ubnet Ma sk , Default G ateway (Optio nal), DNS (O ptional), S er ver IP , Username , and P asswor d.
Internet Connection Ty p e Select PPTP to begin conf iguration of the PPTP connec tion. MTU Specif y the Maximum T ransmit Unit size. EnG enius recommends that it re mains in Auto. IP Addr ess Specify WAN port IP address. IP Subnet Mask Specify WAN IP Subnet Ma sk .

For exam ple: Set up a We b Se r ver on your computer with por t number 8080 . A visitor on the Internet can access your Web Ser ver by entering WA N Por t I P with por t number 8080 .
9.5 DMZ Enabling DMZ will ex pose the computer which is in the DMZ to the Internet. This feature may be used in scenari os such as Internet G amin g or V ideo Confe renc ing.
10 Manage ment Setting s The Management section is on the navigation drop-d own menu. You will see seven options: Administration, Manage ment VLAN, SNMP Settings, Backup / Restore Settings, Firmware Upgrade, Time Settings, and Log. Each option is described below.

10.3 SNMP Set tings Cli ck on the SNMP Setting s link under the Management menu. This is a networking management protocol used to mo nitor networ k - attached devices. SNMP allows messages [called protocol data unit s] to be sent to v a rious parts of a network .
10.4 Backup/R estore Settings Cli ck on the Backup/Restore Setting link under the Management menu. This option is used to save the current settings of the device in a file on a storage devic e, or to load settings on to the device from storage device.
10.6 T ime Settings Cli ck on the Time Settings link under the Management menu. This page allows you to configure the ti me on the d evice. Y ou may do t his manua lly or by connecti ng to a N TP serve r. Manually Set Date and Ti m e Manually setup the date and time.
10.7 Log Cli ck on the Log link under the Man agement menu. This page displays a list of events that are triggered on the Ethernet and Wireless inte rfac e. This log can be referred to when an err or occurs on the system or w hen a report need s to be sent to the tec hnical support department for debugging purposes.
10.8 Diagnostics Cli ck on the Diag nostic s link under the Management menu. This function allows you to detect connection quality and trac e the routing table to the target. Ta r g e t I P Specify the IP address you would lik e to search. Ping P acket Size Specif y the pack et size of each ping.
11 N etwo rk Co nfi gura tio n Exam ples This chapter describes the role o f the ENH500 with 4 modes. The Access P oint mod e’ s default conf iguration is a central unit of the wir eless network or as a root device o f the wired environment. R epeater Mode and Mesh Netw ork Mode need addi tional conf iguration.
11.2 Client Bridge Mode Client Bridge Mode functions lik e a wireless do ngle. It must connect to an Access Point/AP R outer to join the network . Please refer to the last section t o check the Access P oint’ s conf iguration. Client Bridge S tep 1 Login to the web-base d conf iguration interface with the default IP: 192.
11.3 WDS Bridge Mod e Use this featur e to link multiple APs t ogether in a network . All clients a ssociated with any o f the APs can communi cate with each other similar to an ad-hoc mode.
11.4 Client R outer Mode In the Client R outer Mode, the ENH500 has a DHCP Ser ver that allows m ultiple device s to shar e the same Internet connection. Conn ect to an AP/WISP wir elessly and connec t to L ANs via wire d. Client R outer Mode is functi onally opposite to the AP R outer Mode.

HT mod e In the 802.11n system, two new formats, called High Throughput (HT), are defined for the Physical Layer, Mixed Mode, an d Green Field. If a system runs 40 HT, two adjacent 20 MHz channels are used. The larger 40 MHz bandwi dth can provide better transmit quality and speed.
