Loading Plain Paper The f ollow i n g p r oced ure des cri bes h ow to l oad pla in bon d paper. You c an l oad up to 100 sheets o f pl ain paper. 5. Loa d the stac k of paper, prin table s i d e d own, so that i ts right edge rests against th e right s ide of the paper tray. Sli de the s tack into the tray until you f eel som e resistan ce. Then s l i de the l eft edge guide aga inst the left edge of the paper as s hown below.

5. Re place the output tr a y and fold ou t its extensi on. Usi ng Special Pape rs and Other Med ia This sectio n explai n s how to use and l oad specia l c oa ted paper, glossy paper, tran sparenci es, and envelo p es i n your printer.

Unfavorable storage con dition s — espec ial ly h igh temperature, h u midi t y , an d direc t sun l i ght—c an dam age the media. ❑ Remember to s elect the appropriate settin g in the d river sof tware before you print.
Follow these s teps to l oad spec ia l papers and trans parenc ies : 1. Remove the output tray from the top of the p aper tray. 2. Slide th e lef t edge guid e inside the paper tray to the l eft as far as it wil l go and s lide the rear ed ge g ui de toward the front of the printe r as far a s it w ill go.
Load t he paper or trans parencies f irmly agai n s t the righ t side of the paper tray. Slide the stack into the tray un til you feel some r esis tanc e. Then slide th e left edge gu ide agai n s t the left edge of the paper stack . 5. Slide the rear edge guide against the rear edge of the p aper.
Once you r driver settin gs a re correc t, c hoose Print i n th e Fil e menu of your applicati on program to print on the s heets you lo aded . Loading Envelopes and Heavy Paper This sectio n ex plai ns how to l oad env elopes an d heavy paper. For detailed spe c i fication s on paper thi ckness and w eight, s ee Append ix B.

4. Pull up the c a rtridge clam p to open it. The cartridge rises part i ally out of the printer. 5. Lift the c a rtridge ou t of the prin ter and d ispose o f i t carefu l l y so an y excess ink does not spil l. Do not take the used cartridge apart or try to refi ll it.
6. Remove the new i nk c artr i dge from its foil package and remove the tape seal from the top of the c artrid ge. c Cau tion : You must remove t he t ape sea l from the ca r t ridge.
8. Push d own t he i nk cartridge c lamp un til it loc ks i n plac e. 9. Clean the pri nt heads to ensu re tha t ink is p roperly del ive red to ea ch nozzl e. Clean i n g is recomm ended bu t n ot requ ired. If you rep lac ed the black cartridge, hold dow n th e Al t button whi le you press the Load/E j e ct ( or Black ) bu t ton .
Cleaning the P rint er To keep y our print er oper ating at its best, you s hould clean it occ as ional ly as f oll ows: 1. Turn o f f the prin ter and d i s connect th e power co rd an d interfac e cabl e(s). 2. Remove any paper from the paper tray. 3.
Transporting the P rinter If you need to t ransport you r printer, c areful ly repac k it in the original box a n d packing m ater i als a s follow s: 1. Pres s th e Pau se bu tton, and then tu rn of f the prin ter. 2. Open the print er co ver an d make s ure that the prin t hea d is l o c ked i n the fa r right positio n.
If you n otic e probl ems w ith the printed image a fter transporting th e printer, cl ean th e print heads as des cri bed at the beginning of this c h apter. If your printed images are mis ali gned vertical ly, cal ibrate th e printer as described in the Setup and Softwa re G uide .
Error Lights Cert a in pr o blems are id entif ied by the control p a nel li ghts. The follow i ng table describes the m eanin g of each light pattern and what you shoul d do to c orrect the p robl em.
Print Quality Problems Print qual ity problems can often be solved by c lean ing the prin t heads a s d escribed earlier in this ch apter . Then prin t a self test to ch eck the print q uali ty and help i d en tify wh at the problem may be. ( Note that i t ma y ta ke as many as fi ve c leani ng cyc les to s olve a p ri nt quali ty pro bl em.
Printed output is not what you expec t or is faint or blurred. Clean one or both print heads as descri bed earli er i n this chapter. You may not be printi ng on the c o rrect side of the paper.
If you are usin g a PC, yo ur W i n dows video driv er migh t no t be com patible w i th th e p r i nter. U se th e standa r d Wi ndow s VG A driver or contac t t h e m anufac turer of your vi d eo card for an updated driver. For i nformati on on c han ging the video driv er, see you r Windo ws d o c umentati on.
You see incorr ect colors in your prin tout. Make sure EPSON Stylus Pro or Pro XL is selected as the defau lt Window s printer d river ( PC driv er) or i s the l ast printer sel ected in th e Chooser ( Macinto sh dri ver).
Problems with Printing If you can not get th e pr i nter to print, f irst check th at paper is load ed in the printer. Then check that the prin ter i s plugged into a w ork i ng el ectri cal o utl et that i s not c ontrolled by a switc h or timer. Verify that the i n terface cable is securely con nected to the printer and computer.
The No Ink Cart ridge light is o n, and the printer does n ot prin t. One o r both i nk cartrid ges are n ot install ed. Instal l bo th i nk car t ri dges. The printer ma k es a grinding noise and does not fee d paper. Something is press ing against the knob on the printer’s r ight side.
After u pgrading you r computer to Windows 95, the prin ter driver does not work corr e ctly. You need to reinstal l the EPSO N Stylu s Pro or Pro XL printe r dri ver usi ng W indow s 95. See you r Setup and So ftware Guide for Windo ws . You see error message s on y our P C b ecause of pr intin g conflicts.
The printer prin t s bla nk p ages. Make sure EPSON Stylus Pro or Pro XL is selected as the defau lt Window s printer d river ( PC driv er) or i s the l ast printer sel ected in th e Chooser ( Macinto sh dri ver).
The printer do es n ot seem to receive pr int jobs. On a PC, rel ease any prin t jobs that m ay be held i n th e EPSO N Spool Manager. Start Spool Manager and click any job marked pend ing or h eld. Th en open th e Doc umen t menu an d selec t De le te .
Clearing and preventing pape r jams If paper ha s ja mmed i n sid e the printer, c lear the jam as f ollow s: 1. Turn of f the prin t er. 2. Open the print er co ver. 3. Push i n the kno b on the ri ght si de of the prin t er a nd turn it cou ntercl ockwi se as s h ow n below .
If paper jam s frequen t ly , try the f oll owin g: ❑ Use a higher quality paper, one that i s n o t t o o thin, too thic k, or rou gh. M ake su re i t is sui t able f or ink jet prin ters. For bes t qu al ity, u se EP SON spec ial co ated an d high- quali ty glossy papers.
The printer loads more than one sheet at a time. Remove the stack of paper and f an it. Tap it on a flat surface to even the edges. Then relo ad the paper. The paper is too th i n or thi ck or was expos ed to excess humid ity; s ee Append ix B for ex act spec i f icati ons.
Paper is feed i n g crooked. The paper is old or c reased . Use on ly n ew, s mooth sheets of paper. Too much paper is loaded in the paper t ray. Remov e a few sheets. The paper is not the proper si ze and quality; s ee Appendix B for exa ct speci fic ation s.

You c a n use various i nterfac e bo ards to s upplement th e capabi l i ties of your printe r’s bu i l t-in hardw are interfa ces for use w i th your M acintosh or P C. For exam ple, if you want to connect you r printer to an AppleTalk o r EtherTalk n et work, you n eed to instal l a Lo c a lTa lk ® or Ethe rnet ® interfa ce board.
Connecting the Printer to the Network How you c onnect the prin ter to the ne t w ork depends o n your network type: ❑ If you are c onnectin g to a Local Tal k network, attac h a Loc alT alk l ockin g co n nector bo x to the L ocalT alk connect or on the back of the prin ter.
Turning On the Printer’s Network Interface Mode If you enc ounter pr o blem s wh en using t he prin ter on a network, you may need to t urn on the printer’s network mode using th e buttons on the c ontrol panel. F o llow these steps: 1. Make su re the printer is off and paper is l oad ed in the paper tray.
