OPERA TING PR OCEDURES T wo-way FM radi o syste ms must be op erate d in acco rdance with th e rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Opera tors of two-way radio equipment must be thoroughly familiar with the rules that apply to the intended type of radio operation.
INTR ODUCTION This manual describes how to use the MDX Con ventional Mobile Radio. The MDX is a synthesized, m icropro cessor-based, high performanc e simplex mobile FM radio providing reliable two-way c ommunications. Dire ct mobile to mobile communication, when out of r epeater range, is also provided.

CONTR OLS, INDICA TORS, AND DISPLA YS The MDX Con ventional mobile radio co ntains ten bu ttons , an e ight charac ter DO T MA TRIX display a nd se ven indica tors (see Figure 1). In addition, there are times wh en part o f the eight character display is used to display the radio status.

2. Set the volume using the V OLUME RAMP b u tton. A short be ep sounds each time the V OLUME bu tton is pressed. The beeps will not sound if a call is being recei ved. SELECT T o select a dif ferent channel when you ha ve selected a con ventional system : 1.
3. Decide what you wan t to say . If yo u inte nd a l engthy message (or sev eral messages), the vehicle engine should be running to maintain the ba ttery ch arge. 4. Observe the BSY in dicator and then press CLR the switch to assure that the channel is not in use.

Press the CHANNEL/SEL (+) b utton until the desired priority le vel is displayed by the scan p riority indicators on the right side o f the display; the choices are S, P2; P1 o r all off (all off remo ves the channel from the SCAN list). 4. Press the CLR button when completed to return to n ormal operation.
Scan operation will be determined by the following conditions: • PRIORITY 1, PRIORIT Y 2 and NON-PRI ORITY PR OGRAMMED The Priority 1, Priority 2 and up to 14 remaining channels will be scann ed. Once a carri er is dete cted (and if progr ammed, the corr ect Channel Guard is decoded), the display will indicate that channel.
SCN indicator When the SCAN button is pushed, the radio will light the SCN indicator and begin scanning. The SCN indicator will flash when the mic rophone is place d off- hook to sho w the ra dio is no longe r scann ing (only if the ra dio is PC progra mmed not to sca n off-ho ok).
Monitor (CLR) Switc h Operation In Scan The CLR switch does not ope rate while scan ning inacti ve ch annels. When a chan nel beco mes act iv e, the CLR switch operat es onl y during the scan hang time after th e channel acti vity disappears.

AEGIS OP ERA TION Each chan nel can b e programme d for AN ALOG V oice, Ae gis Digital V oice, or Aegis VGE E ncrypted Digital V oice mode of operation by progra mming the "KEY" v ariable. When programmed "DIS", a channel will only operate in the AN ALOG mode.
CLEAR MODES In clear mode the ra dio transmits and rec eives only analog v o ice signals. These analog signals are non-digitized and no n-encrypted. Clear mode transmissions can be easily monitored by unauthorized per sons. Channels programmed for clea r op eration cannot transmit or r eceiv e Aegis digital messages.
When operating on a channe l programm ed for digit al mo de, a ll transmissions will be digital transmissions and the radio will rece i ve clear a nd digital signals.

If the last state of the radio was digital mode, the digital mode will be enabled on power up. Also the digital mode will be enable d if forced operati on ha s bee n prog rammed in the radio . If a channel is no t programm ed for d igital mode op eration, PVT D IS will be displayed if an attempt is made to enable digital transmit mode.
OPTIONS Ty p e 9 9 O p t i o n If the T ype 99 Option is present, indi vidual selecti ve calling is possible. Press the pr ogra mmed Fle x ke y or us e the men u an d CHANNE L/SEL ke ys to enable the decoder option (Scan must be of f). The LED display will show the option status: "T99 ON" or "T99 OFF".
OR 1. Make sure the ra dio is turned ON. 2. Press the A1 or A2 button (pre-p rogram med). Wh en PUB ADDR appears in the display press the PTT switch to transmit the m icro- phone au dio to the exter nal speak er . 3. After the P A operation is completed, press the A1 or A2 b utton to return to normal operation.
