Operation Operation Note: Deter mine the left and right sides of the machine from the normal operating position. Controls Blade Control Bail Located on the upper handle as sho wn in Figure 4. When the blade control bail is depressed, the system senses that the operator is in the nor mal operator's position.

Operation Operating Instructions Handle Adjustment The height of the handle can be adjusted for comfortable operation. Stand behind the handle to deter mine the height. T o adjust the handle height, position the hardware into one of the three holes in the handle brac ket.
Operation 5. F or units without a Blade Brak e Clutch: Hold the blade control bail to the handle. 6. Pull the starter handle lightly until you feel resistance, then pull it sharply . Allow the rope to return slowly . 7. F or ECXHNBBC21 Units: Gradually push in the c hoke control as the engine w ar ms up .
Operation Using the Mulch Plug Occasionally y ou ma y wish to use the mulc h plug to mulc h the g rass and leaf clippings bac k into the la wn. • Installing the Mulch Plug: 1. Stop the engine and w ait for all moving parts to stop . 2. R emov e the g rass bag if it is on the mow er .
Operation the blade has not properly stopped, resulting in an unsafe operating condition. Contact an Authorized Ser vice Dealer . DANGER If the blade brak e clutch system is inoperativ e, the blade will continue to rotate when y ou release the blade control bail.

See the Engine manual for additional infor mation.) Y early or before storage • Empty the fuel tank before repairs as directed or before storage.

Maintenance Service Air Filter (Kawasaki Units) Service Interval: Every 25 hours—Clean the foam pre-cleaner (Kawasaki Units). Every 300 hours— Replace the paper air lter (Kawasaki Units). (May need more often in dusty conditions. See the Engine manual for additional information.
Maintenance (ECXHNBBC21 and ECXHN21 Units). (May need more often if they are damaged or excessively dirty .) Note: Do Not operate the engine without the air cleaner assembly; extreme engine damage will occur . 1. Stop the engine and w ait for all mo ving parts to stop .
Maintenance 5. Place a suitable drain pan under the dipstic k/oil drain. 6. Clean around the dipstick. 7. R emov e the dipstick by rotating the cap counterclockwise and pulling it out. 8. Raise the left side of the lawn mo wer to drain the oil from the dipstick ll tube into the drain pan.

Maintenance 3. If the lawn mow er does not self propel with bail engag ed, tighten the belt by turning the dri v e cable nuts clockwise . T o maximize belt life , Do Not ov ertighten the belt. If the lawn mow er creeps forw ard without the bail engaged, loosen the belt by turning the driv e cable nuts counterclockwise .
Maintenance Cleaning Clean Grass Build-Up Under Deck Service Interval: Before each use or daily 1. Stop engine, w ait for all moving par ts to stop , and remov e spark plug wire . 2. T o ensure the best perfor mance , keep the underside of the la wn mower housing clean.
Maintenance 2. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug (see Figure 9 and Figure 10). 3. Pull upw ard on the back of the co v er to unsnap the front and bac k cov er tabs (see Figure 30). 4. Lift off the cov er and br ush out all the debris around the belt area.
