A BOUT T HIS G UIDE Congratulations on your purchase of your Alloy 24-Port 10/100Mbps Fas t Ethernet Sm art Switch. This device integrates 100Mbps Fast Ethernet and 10Mbps Ethernet network capabilities in a highly flexible package. Purpose This guide discuss es how to install your 24-Port 10/10 0Mbps Fast Ethernet Smart S witch.
.
I NTRODUCTION This chapter describes the features of the 24-Po rt 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Smart S witch and some background inf ormation about Ethernet/Fast Ethernet s witching technology.
Switching Technology Another approach to pus hing beyond the limits of Ethernet technology is the development of switchin g technology. A switch bridges Ethernet packets at the MAC add ress level of the Ethernet protocol transmitting amon g connected Ethernet or Fast Ethernet LAN segments.
VLAN (Virtual Lo cal Area Networ k) A VLAN is a group of end-stations that are not constrained by their physical location and can communicate as if in a common broadcast domain, a LAN. The primary utility of using VLAN is to reduce latency a nd need for routers, using fas ter switching instead.
Features ¾ 24×10/100Mbps Au to-negotiation Eth ernet ports ¾ All ports support a uto MDI/MDIX , so ther e is no ne ed to use c ross-o ver c ables or an up-li nk port ¾ Full/half duplex tran sfer.
¾ Standard 19 ” Rack-mount siz e U NPACKING AND I NSTALLATION This chapter provides unpacking and setup information for the Switch. Unpacking Open the shipping cartons of the Switch and carefully unpacks its contents.
Installation The site where you install the hub stack may greatly affect its performance. When installing, con sider the following pointers: ¾ Install the Switch in a fairly cool and dry place. See Technical Specifications for th e acceptable temperature and h umidity operating ra nges.
Rack Mounti ng The switch can be mounted in an EI A standard-size, 19-inch rack, which can be placed in a wiring closet with other equipment. Attac h the mounti ng bracke ts at t he switch ’s front panel (one on each side), and s e cure them with the provided screws.

automatically and may be turned on without having any or all LAN segment cables connected. I DENTIFYING E XTERNAL C OMPONENT S This chapter describes the fro nt panel, rear panel, and LED indicators of the Switch. Front Panel The figure below sho ws the front panels of the Switch .
Comprehensive LED ind icators display the status of the switch and the network (see the LED Indicators chapter belo w). ¾ 10/100BASE-T Twisted-Pair Ports These ports support network s peeds of either 10Mbps or 100Mbps, and can operate in half- and full- du plex transfer modes.
U NDERSTANDING LED I NDICATORS The front panel LEDs provides instant status f eedback, and, helps monitor and troubleshoot when needed. 1 POWER SYSTEM 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1 0 1 11 21 31 41 51 6 24-Por t 10/100Mbps Ethernet Smart Switch Link/ACT FDX 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 FX Figure 5.

Figure 7. Connection Description Step 3. The Connect To screen will appear as be low. Pull down the Connect using and choose the COM port that the Switch has been connected to, then press OK . Figure 8. Connect To Step 4. Make sure the Sw itch serial port parameters have been set as per the factory default settings (Figure 9).
Figure 9. Port Set tings Configurin g the Switc h The 24-Port 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Smart Switch has a menu-driven cons ole interface for smart switch configuration. The Switch can be configured through the serial port. A netwo rk administrator can manage, control and monitor the switch from the console program.
In the System screen, Factory Reset, Change P assword, Confirm Password, Refresh Time, and Login Timeout, can be viewed and changed. System Uptime can’t be altered and governed by the Switch.
Figure 10. Login Input the password in the blank, and then press Enter to login Main Menu. If you manage the Switch for the first time, you should input the factory default password “ admin ” to login to the Switch.
Figu re 11. Main Menu Configuring Setup Setting Note that there are two items, Port Config uration and VLAN in Setup menu, shown as Figure 12 ..
Figure 12. Setup Menu ¾ Port Configuration In Port Configuration menu (F igure 13), each port’s (port 25: Fibre Port) Speed, Flow Control, and QoS can be controlled. Link Status is au tomatically determined by the Switch and can’t be shifted. Figure 13.
(1) Speed There ar e five m odes— Auto , 100M Full , 100M Half , 10M Full , and 10M Half —for speed selections. To change the speed s etting, highlight Port and ente r the port number t o select the desired port, next hi ghlight Speed, click Enter , and use S pace Bar to swit ch between the five differe nt opti ons.
Grouping of individual ports into a small “virtual” netwo rk of their own being independent of all other ports . To change the VLAN, locate the port that needs to be set, select “V” for joining the VLAN group and “-” for not joining. The default setting of VLAN is shown as Figure 14.
1 2 3 4 VLAN1 5 2 3 4 VLAN 2 X Figure 15. There is no connection between PC1 and PC5 Using VLAN, it can divide the Switch into many independent small switches. F or example, in Figure 16, the Switch has been divide d into four VLAN groups. All VLAN groups are independent and there’s no link between each VLAN group.
Configuring System Setting The System Configuration Me nu screen (shown in Figure 17) indicates the following inform ation: ¾ Factory Reset: Press to turn back to fac tory sett ing once the setting in blur. ¾ Change Passw ord: To change the input path password.
Configuring File Setting The Switch can have its configuration files uplo aded or downloaded by using the File screen shown in Figure 18. ¾ Upload Configuration: Select this for uploading the configuration file to th e device. ¾ Download Configurat ion: Select this for copying or backup the current st atus.
Statistics ¾ Statistics M enu In the Statistics m enu screen (shown Figure 19) , all ports’ transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) status summaries can be viewed.
