I NTRODUCTION This chapter describes the features of the 16-Por t 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Smart Switch and s ome background inf ormation about Ethernet/Fast Eth ernet and Switching technolog y.
Switching Technology Another approach to pus hing beyond the limits of Ethernet technology is the development of switchin g technology. A switch bridges Ethernet packets at the MAC address level of the Ethernet protocol transmitting amon g connected Ethernet or Fast Ethernet LAN segments.
VLAN (Virtual Lo cal Area Networ k) A VLAN is a group of end-stations that are not constrained by their physical location and can communicate as if in a common broadcast domain, a LAN. The primary utility of using VLAN is to reduce latency a nd need for routers, using faster s witching instead.
Features ¾ 16×10/100Mbps Au to-negotiation Ethernet p orts ¾ All ports support aut o MDI/MDIX , so ther e is no ne ed to use cro ss-over cables or an up-l ink port ¾ Full/half duplex trans fer m.
U NPACKING AND I NSTALLATION This chapter provides unpacking and s etup information for the Switch. Unpacking Open the shipping carton of the Switch and carefully unpack its contents.
Installation The site where you install the hub stack may greatly affect its performance. When installing, con sider the following pointers: ¾ Install the Switch in a fairly cool and dry place. See Technical Specifications for the a cceptable temperature and humidi ty ope rati ng range s.
Rack Mounting The switch can be mounted in an EI A standard-size, 19-inch rack, which can be placed in a wiring closet with other equipment. Attach th e mounting bracke ts at the switch’s fron t panel (one each side), and secure them with the screws provided.
Connecti ng Network Ca ble The Switch supports 10Mbps Ethernet or 100Mbps Fast Ethernet and it runs both in half and full duplex modes. The Switch ports are Au to-MDI types. The Switch can automatically change all ports between MDI-II & MDI-X type s alleviating any worry about using standard or crossover type cables.
I DENTIFYING E XTERNAL C OMPONENT S This chapter describes the fro nt panel, rear panel, and LED indicators of the Switch. Front Panel The figure below sho ws the front panels of the Switch .
Rear Panel AC Power Connector Figur e 4. Re ar pa nel of th e Switc h ¾ AC Power Conne ctor This is a th ree-pronged (IEC) connector that supports the power cord. Plug the female connector of the provided power cord into this connector, and the male into a power outlet.
U NDERSTANDING LED I NDICATORS The front panel LEDs pro vide instant status feedback, and help monitor and troubleshoot when needed. 1 POWER SYSTEM 23456 7 89 1 0 1 1 1 2 1 3 1 4 1 5 1 6 16-Port 1 0/100Mb ps E thernet Sm art Sw itch Link/ACT FDX FX Figure 5.
Ports 1~16 Status LEDs ¾ Link/ACT On : When the Li nk/ACT LED lights on, the respective port is successfully connected to an Etherne t network. Blinking : When the Link/ACT LED is blinking, the port is transmit ting or receiving data on the Ethernet network.
C ONFIGURATION This Switch is an unmanaged, but “smart” S witch because programmable administration parame ters make it operate more effectively than regular unmanaged (dumb) switches.
Figure 6. Start Hyper Term inal function Step 2. Enter a name in the blank to set up a new connection, and then press OK . Figure 7. Connection Desc ription.
Step 3. The Connect To screen will appear as below. Pull down the Connect using and choose the COM port that the Switch has been connected to, then press OK . Figure 8. Conne ct To Step 4. Make sure the Switch serial port parameters have been set as per the factory default settings (Figure 9).
Configurin g the Switc h The 16-Port 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Smart Switch has a menu-driven cons ole interface for smart switch configuration. The Switch can be configured through the serial port. A network administrator can manage, control and monitor the switch from the console program.
Login First execute the termin al emulation program on the remote workstation, and turn on the S witch. When logging into the Switch, the following screen (Figu re 10) prompt appears: Password: Figure 10. Login Insert the passwo rd into the blank space and then press Enter to log in to the Main Menu.
Main Me nu The main menu appears, as s hown in Figure 11. Note the console keys in th e lower part of the display. Move to highligh t a de sired option by using Up Arrow , Down Arrow and Tab keys, and then press the Enter key to confirm. There are four options: Setup, System, File, and Statistics, s hown in the Main Menu screen.
Configuri ng Setup M enu Note that there are two items, Port Configuration and VLAN, in Setup menu as shown in Figure 12. Figure 12. Setup Menu ¾ Port Configuration In the Port Configuration menu (Figure 13), each port’s (inc. port 17: Fibre port) Speed, Flow Control, and QoS can be controlled.
Figure 13. Port Configuration (1) Speed There ar e five m odes— Auto , 100M Full , 100M Half , 10 M Full , and 10M Half —for speed selections. To change the speed s etting, highlight Port and e.
High and Low . The default setting for QoS on all ports is High . To change the QoS setting, h ighlight Port and enter the port number to select the desired port. Set QoS as required to determine which ports will alway s transfer their data first. (4) Link Status This value is automatically determined by the Switch and can’t be changed.
For example, th ere are five co mputers (PC1~PC5) connected to the Switch’s port 1~5. They had been d ivide d into two VLAN groups: VLAN1 (PC1~PC4) and VLAN2 ( PC2~PC5). There is no way to connect PC1 and PC5, as s hown in Figure 15. If PC1 has to connect to PC5, it should with it in the sa me VLAN.
Configuring System Setting The System Configuration Me nu screen (shown in Figure 17) indicates the following inform ation: ¾ Factory Reset : Press to revert to factory settings if the configuration becomes corrupt. ¾ Change Passw ord : Change the input password.
Configuring File Setting The Switch can have its conf iguration files uploaded or downloaded by using the File screen shown in Figure 18. ¾ Upload Configuration : Select this for uploading the configuration file to the device. ¾ Download Configuration : Select this for backing up the current configuration to another device.
Statistics ¾ Statistics M enu In the Statistics menu screen, shown in Figure 19, the transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) status s ummaries can be viewed.
Highlight Port and enter port numbe r to view the sta tistics detail s (see Figure 20). Figure 20. Statistics Detail.
