Turn off the device Turn off the HP prod uct by pressing the Power but ton located on the product. Wait unti l the Power light turns of f before unplugging the power cord or turnin g off a power source.

Recommended papers for photo printing If you want the best print quality, HP recomme nds using HP papers that are sp ecifically designed for t he type of project you are printing. Depending on your cou ntry/region, som e of these papers might not be available.

Load media This section provide s instructions for load ing media into the device. Load Tray 1 (mai n tray) 1. Lift the outpu t tray. 2. Slide the medi a guide out to the wide st setting. 3. Insert the media prin t-side down along the right of th e tray.
5. Pull out the ext ension on the output tray. NOTE: For media longer than 2 79 mm (11 inches), pull the e xtension out to the maximum extended p osition. Make sure the flap at th e end of the extension t ray is not lifted, o therwise it will inte rfere with the paper being ejected.
To change default settings fo r all future jobs (Windows) 1. Click Start , point to Settings , and th en click Printers or Printers and Faxe s . - Or - Click Start , click Control Panel , and the n double-click Printers . NOTE: If prompted, enter the computer administrator's passw ord.
• For auto-duplexing , when printing fini shes on one side of the me dia, the device holds the media and pauses w hile the ink dries. Then the me dia is pulled back into the device and the second side is printed. When prin ting is complete, t he media is dropped onto the output tray.
4. Select the m edia size f rom the Size dro p-down list. If you do not see the m edia size, create a custom media size. a .S e l e c t Custom from the drop-dow n list. b . Type a name for the n ew custom size. c .I n t h e Width and Height boxes, type th e dimensions, and then click Save .
NOTE: Open the file in a softw are application and assign the image size. Make sure the size corresponds t o the media size on which you are pri nting the image. You can also gain access to this feature from the Printing Sh ortcuts tab (Windows only).
Print a Web page (Windows only) You can print a Web page f rom your Web browser on the HP Printer. If you use Internet Expl orer 6.0 or higher for We b browsing, you can use HP Smar t Web Printing to ensure si mple, predictable We b printing with control over what you want and how you want i t printed.

Use this tool... to do the following... • Configure n etwork sett ings: Click the Networ king tab, and then click an option in the left pane. • Order supplies: On any tab, click the Order Supplies button, and then follow the onscree n instructions.
Embedded Web server When the device is con nected to a network, you can use the embedded Web server to view status info rmation, change sett ings, and manage it f rom your computer. NOTE: For a list of system requirements for the embedded Web server, see Embedded Web serve r specifications .
You can open the embedd ed Web server by using these met hods: • Web browser: In a supp orted Web browser on your comp uter, type the IP addre ss or hostname that has bee n assigned to the devi ce. For example, if the IP ad dress is 123.123.123.123, type the following address into the Web browse r: http://123.

Use the HP Dev ice Manager (Mac OS X) To open the HP Device Manager on a Ma cintosh computer 1. Click the HP Device Mana ger icon in the Dock. NOTE: If the icon does not appear in the Dock, click the Spo tlight icon on the right side of the menu ba r, type HP Device Manager in the box, and then click the HP Device Manage r entry.
1. Printer Information: Shows device information (such a s the product name, model number, serial num ber, and firmware version nu mber), the accessories that are installed (such a s the duplexer), and the number of p ages printed from the trays and accessories.
Understand the network conf iguration or wireless status report The network configur ation or wireless status report shows the netw ork or wireless set tings for the device.
3. 802.11 Wireless (so me models): Shows information about your wireless network connection, such as t he hostname, IP address, subnet m ask, default gateway, and server. 4. Miscel laneous: Shows informat ion, such as the administrat or details. • mDNS: Shows in formation about the active Multicast Domai n Name System (mDNS) connection.
NOTE: You can also share the device wi th other computers using a simple form of networking known as lo cally shared networking. For more i nformation, see To share the device on a lo cally shared netw ork .
Network connection If the device has netw ork capability, it can be shared in a network environment by connecting it dire ctly to the network. T his type of connecti on offers the abi lity to manage the device using the em bedded Web server from any compute r on the network.
A client comp uter can connect to the device i n the foll owing ways: • In the Printe rs folder, double-cli ck the Add Printer icon and follow the instructions f or a network install ation. For more informati on, see Install the pri nter driver using Add Printer .
To share the d evice on a locally shared netw ork When you connect the device directly, you can sha re it with other co mputers using a simple form of net working known as locall y shared networking. Use this conf iguration only in small grou ps or when usage is low.

◦ Be on the same subnet and same channel ◦ Have the same 802.11 security set tings • Infrastructure (r ecommended): On an infrastru cture netwo rk, the devic e is set to infrastructure commu nication mode and communicates with other devices on the network, wh ether the devices are wired or wireless, through a WAP.
4. When prompted, temp orarily connect the USB wireless setup ca ble. 5. Follow the onscree n instructions to complete the installation. 6. Disconnect the USB wireless setu p cable when prompte d. To set up the dev ice on a wireless communica tion using the installer (Mac O S X) 1.
(and you know the HP device is on the network), or yo u have already successfully installed HP soft ware and experience proble ms, try the following : 1. If you are using a comput er running Windows, in the firewa ll configuration utility, look for an option to trust compu ters on the local subnet (sometimes called th e “scope“ or “zone“).
Change from a USB connec tion to a wireless connectio n (Mac OS X) 1. Click the HP Devi ce Manager icon on the Dock or in the Hewlet t Packard folder in the Applications f older. 2. From the Information and Settings list, select Network Printer Setup Util ity .
• Change the p assword periodically. • Change the defaul t password provided by th e manufacturer for administrat or access to the access point or wireless router. Some routers let you chan ge the administrator name as wel l. • Turn off administrat ive access over wireless if possi ble.
10. Press the Power button to tu rn the devi ce on. After connecting and turning on the device, yo u might have to wait several minutes for all of the Plug and Pla y events to complete. 11. Follow the on screen instructions. When the softwar e installation is complete, the HP Di gital Imagin g Monitor icon appears in the Windows system tray.
To uninstall from a Macinto sh computer, method 1 1. Launch HP Device Manager . 2. Click Information and Settings . 3. Select Uninstall HP software from the pull-down menu. Follow the onscree n instructions. 4. After the softwa re is uninstalled, rest art your computer.

• Turn off the HP Printer by p ressing the Power button locate d on the product. Wait until the Power light turns off bef ore unplugging the power cord or turning off a power strip.
Replace the ink cartr idges NOTE: For information on recycling used ink supplies, see HP inkjet supplies recycling program . If you do not already have replacement ink cartridges for the HP Printer, see Order printing supplies on line . NOTE: At this time, some portions of the HP Web site are available in English on ly.
5. Twist the oran ge cap to snap it o ff. NOTE: Make sure the plastic tab is enti rely removed and that the label is slight ly torn, revealing the vent channel. 6. Using the colore d shaped icons for help, slide t he ink cartridge into the empty slot until it clicks i nto place and is seat ed firmly in the slot.
Make sure that you insert the ink cartridge into the slot that has the same sha ped icon and color as the one you are installi ng. 7. Repeat steps 3 th rough 6 for each ink cartrid ge you are replacing.
Print and evaluate a print quality report Print quality problems can have m any causes: software setti ngs, a poor image file, or t he printing system itself. If you are unhappy with the quality of your prints, a Print Quality Diagnostic page can help you determine if the printing system is working properly.

Preventing the prob lem that causes ragged ba rs on the Print Quality Di agnostic report: • Avoid leaving open ed ink cartridges outside of t he printer for an extended period of time. • Wait until a ne w cartridge is ready to b e installed before removing an old ink cartridge.
If the color of any of th e bars is not uniform, fol low these steps: 1. If the print er was recently transport ed at a high altitude, t ry a printhead cle aning. 2. If the printer wa s not recently transp orted, try printing another Print Quality Diagno stic report.
Alignment Patterns If the color bars and large font t ext look OK, and the i nk cartridges are not empty, look at the alignment pat tern directly above the col or bars. Example of a good alignment pattern The lines are straight. Examples of a bad alignment pattern The lines are jagged - align the printer.
• Power cord and ot her cables are working, and are firmly connected t o the device. Make sure the d evice is conn ected firml y to a function ing alternatin g current (AC) power outlet, an d is turned on. For voltage requirem ents, see Electric al specif ications .
Check the devi ce software settin gs Print speed is slower when Best or Maxi mum dpi is select ed as the print quality. To increase the print speed, select different print settings in the device driver. For more information, see Change print settings .
Check the ma rgin settings Make sure the ma rgin settings for the document do not ex ceed the printabl e area of the device. For more information, see Set m inimum margins . Check the color print settings Make sure Print in Graysc ale is not selected in the print driver.
Print troubleshooting Use this section to so lve these printing prob lems: • Envelopes prin t incorrectly • Borderless pri nting produ ces unexpected results • The product is no t responding •.
Borderless printi ng produces unexpected resul ts Solution: Try printing the image from the pho to imaging software that came with the product. Cause: Printing a borderless image f rom a non-HP softwa re application produced unexpected results. The produ ct is not re sponding Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue.
TIP: You can set the p roduct as the default printe r to ensure that the printer is automatically selected when you select Print in the File menu of your diff erent software applic ations. Cause: The product was not the selected prin ter. If this did not solve the issue, try the next so lution.
Solution 7: Clear the p aper jam Solution: Clear the p aper jam and remove any torn paper that remains in the product. For more information, see: Clear jams Cause: The product had a paper ja m.
The product prints meanin gless characters Try the following sol utions to resolve the issue. Solutions are listed in order, with the most likely solution first. If the first solution does no t solve the problem, contin ue trying the remaining solut ions until the issue is re solved.
Solution 2: Load paper in the i nput tray Solution: Load paper i n the input tray. For more information, see: Load media Cause: The product was out of pap er. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 3: Select the correct printer Solution: Make sure you have selected the correct printer in your software application.
From your computer, ope n the printer folder and see i f the cancelled job rema ins in the print queue. Try to de lete the job from the que ue. If the print job rem ains in the queue, try o ne or both of the fo llowing: • Disconnect the USB ca ble from the product, restar t the computer, and then reconnect the USB cabl e to the product.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 10: Restart the product Solution: Turn off the product, and then unplug t he power cord. Plug the power cord back in, and then p ress the Power button to t urn on the produ ct. Cause: The product experienced an error.
Solution 2: Ve rify the paper size setting Solution: Verify that you have sel ected the proper paper size settin g for your project. Make su re that you ha ve loaded the corre ct paper size in the input tray. Cause: The pape r size setting might not have been set correct ly for the project yo u were printing .
Solution 2: Check the layou t of the document Solution: Make sure the l ayout of the document you are trying to print fits on a paper size supported by th e product. To preview the print layout 1. Load the correct paper size into the input tray. 2. Preview your prin t job before sending it to the product.
A blank page came out whi le printing Try the following sol utions to resolve the issue. Solutions are listed in order, with the most likely solution first. If the first solution does no t solve the problem, contin ue trying the remaining solut ions until the issue is re solved.
Solution 5: Load paper in the i nput tray Solution: If the pro duct has only a few sheets remain ing, load more paper in the input tray. If there is plenty of paper i n the input tray, remove the pap er, tap the stack of paper against a flat surface, and reload th e paper into the input t ray.
Solution 1: Mak e sure you are using g enuine HP ink car tridges Solution: Check to see if your ink cartridge s are genuine HP ink cartridges. HP recommends tha t you use genuine HP ink cartridges. Genuine H P ink cartridges are designed and teste d with HP printers to help you e asily produce great results, time after time.
For more information, see: Select print media Cause: The wrong kind of paper w as loaded in the input tra y. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 4: Check th e ink levels Solution: Check the estimated ink leve ls in the ink cartr idges.
Aligning the prin ter can help ensure excel lent print quality. For more information, see: Align the printh ead Cause: The print er needed to be ali gned. If this did not solve the issue, try the next so lution. Solution 7: Clea n the printhead Solution: Check the followi ng potential prob lems, and then cle an the printhead.
Solution 1: Make sure you are using genuine H P ink cartridges Solution: Check to see if your ink cartridges are genuine HP ink ca rtridges. HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink cart ridges. Genuine HP ink cartridges are designed a nd tested with HP printers to help you easily produce great results, time after time.
Always make sure the p aper you are printing on is f lat. For best results w hen printing images, use HP Advanced Photo Paper. Store specialty media in its original packagin g inside a resealable plastic bag on a flat surface in a cool, dry place. When you are read y to print, remove only the paper you plan to use immedi ately.
NOTE: For this issue, there is no t a problem with your ink sup plies. Therefore, replacing the in k cartridges or printhead is no t necessary. • Solution 1: Ch eck the paper type • Solution 2: Us.
• Solution 3: Check the ink levels • Solution 4: Al ign the printhead • Solution 5: Clean the print head • Solution 6: Conta ct HP support Solution 1: Make sure the pape r is loaded corr ectly Solution: Make sure th at the paper is l oaded corre ctly in the inp ut tray.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 5: Clean the pri nthead Solution: Check the fo llowing potential problems, and then cle an the printhead. After cleaning th e printhead, print a print quality report. Evaluat e the print quality report to see if the print quality probl em still exists.
Solution 2: Chec k the paper type Solution: HP recommends that you use HP papers or any other paper type that is appropriate for th e product. Always make sure the p aper you are printing on is f lat. For best results w hen printing images, use HP Advanced Photo Paper.
Solution 5: Contact HP suppor t Solution: Contac t HP support for service. Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose yo ur country/region, and the n click Contact HP for information on callin g for te chnical support. Cause: There was a problem with th e printhead.
Solution 3: Print the image in a smaller size Solution: Reduce the size of the i mage and then print it . If you are printing a photo or graphic, and the p rint size is set too high , it will be blurry or fuzzy when printed. If a digital photo or rasteriz ed graphic has been resized, it can be blurry or fuzzy when printed.
Solution 1: Ma ke sure the paper is loaded co rrectly Solution: Make sure that the paper is loaded corre ctly in the input tr ay. For more information, see: Load media Cause: The paper was not loa ded correctly. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution.
Solution 2: Wait while the ink dries Solution: Wait at least thirty minutes for the ink inside the produ ct to dry, then try the print job again. Cause: The excess ink in t he product needed to dry out. Paper is not pick ed up from the input tray Try the following sol utions to resolve the issue.
Solution 4: Clean the rol lers Solution: Clean t he rollers. Make sure you have the following materi als available: • A lint-free cloth, o r any soft material that will not com e apart or leave fibers. • Distilled, filtere d, or bottled water (tap wate r might contain contaminants that can damage the ink cartridges).
not have time to wait, you can clean the pr inthead, but this uses more ink, and the poor black text may reoccur un til automatic servicing is allow ed to complete. Cause: Many black print quality problems cl ear up when the automatic services are performed.

To clean the printhead fr om the Toolbox (Mac OS X) 1. Click the HP Devi ce Manager icon in the Dock. NOTE: If HP Device Manager is not in the Dock, click the Spotlight icon on the right side of the menu ba r, type HP Device Manager in the box, and then click the HP Device Manager entry.
To align the printhead fro m the Toolbox (Mac OS X) 1. Click the HP Devi ce Manager icon in the D ock. NOTE: If HP Device M anager is not in the Dock, click the Spotlight icon on the right side of the menu bar, type HP Device Manage r in the box, and then clic k the HP Device Manage r entry.
Media is not coming out c orrectly • Make sure the outpu t tray extension is exten ded; otherwise, pr inted pages may fall off the device. • Remove excess media from the o utput tray. There is a limit t o the number of sheets the tray can hold. Pages are sk ewing • Make sure the media l oaded in the trays is aligned to the paper guides.
Check the comp uter Make sure the computer t hat you are using is connected to the network. Check your Web br owser Make sure the Web browser me ets the minimum system requir ements.
◦ Compare the IP address listed in the dialo g box and make sure it matches the IP address listed on the network confi guration page. If th e IP addresses are different, change the IP addre ss in the dialog box to matc h the address on the network configuratio n page.

To check a wi reless connection 1. Make sure that you r computer's wireless has been turned on. (For more information, see the documentat ion that came with yo ur computer.) 2. If you are not us ing a unique network name (SSI D), then it is possible t hat your wireless compu ter could be connected to a nearby ne twork that is not yours.
Make sure that the HP de vice is connected to your ne twork If your device is not connected t o the same network as your computer, you w ill not be able to use the HP devi ce over the network. Follow the steps described in this sectio n to find out if your de vice is actively connected t o the correct network.

6. If an ink cartridge was st icking up and you were able to snap it back down int o place, close the ink cartri dge access door and check if the error has gone away. • If the error has gone aw ay, stop troubleshooting here. T he error has been resolv ed.
Solve network pr oblems General ne twork trouble shooting • If you are un able to in stall the de vice software, ve rify that: ◦ All cable connections t o the computer and the device are secure. ◦ The network is ope rational and the netw ork hub is turned on.
Clear jams Occasionally, media becomes jammed during a jo b. Try the followin g remedies before you attemp t to clear the jam. • Make sure that you a re printing with media t hat meets specification s. For more information, see Select p rint media .
