Quick Start Q-3 Setting the paper size The fax machine can print on three paper sizes: L etter, A4 , and Legal. L etter or A4 will be the default paper si ze, depending on the country setting. Tip! If your faxes are being clipped in width or length, verify that the correct country is selected under the C o untry and Language menu option.

hp fax 1020 series 26 Recording Outgoing Messages Before using the answering machine, you must record a greeting or outgoing message (OGM). The outgoi ng message must be between 2 a nd 4 0 seconds long. K eep your message as short as possible to ensure that all faxes are received.
Answering Machine 27 Listening to Messages When messa ges have been received, the Messages light will blink. Use the buttons for the following tasks: • Pla y — Plays all mes sages starting with the new ones. Pressin g Pl ay in the middle of a message w ill pause it; press Pl a y again to restart.

Answering Machine 29 Changing the Length of M essages You can change the time available for incomi ng mess ages from the default of 60 s ec on ds to 30, 90 , o r 1 20 se co nds . The messag e length will be automatically adjust ed for shorter messag es.
hp fax 1020 series 30 Listening to Messages Remotely You can pick up your messages from any touch tone telephone using your PI N (personal identification number) C ode. Select a 3-digit number that you will remember. Important! If you want to access your TA M remotely, you must change the PIN C ode from the default *000.

33 5 F ax F unctions This chapter will in troduce you to the various faxing features of the product. Receiving F axes How you receive faxes depends on how Answer Mode is set. Be sure you have set the a nswer mode to best meet your need s. Se e “Setting the Answer Mode” on page 8.
hp fax 1020 series 34 Sending a Fax You can send a fax using several methods. • Standard method—s cans and sends each page • Scan and fax—scans all of the pages before starting to send. This is very useful for multiple pag e faxes so that you can determine that all pages are scanned prop erly before sending starts.
Fax Functions 35 Scan & Fax Scan & F ax can be used for an individual fa x document or set as a d efault for all faxes. When you use Scan & F ax, all pages of the fax docum ent are scanned before the number is dialed. This featur e al lows you to make sure that all pages are scanned pro perly before walking away from the machine.

Fax Functions 39 Fax Settings Several settings are available to chan ge the appearance of your sent faxes. These settings do not affect incoming faxes. Contrast The contrast button on the front panel allows you to lighten or darken the image for the next fax you send or co py you make.
