66 Functional overview EN Ba sic functions This chapter presents a functional ov er view of the HP LaserJet 3100/ 3150 product’ s processes. The f ollowing systems are discussed: ● optical system .
EN Printer functions 67 P r inte r functions Printer functions are divided into four g roups: ● engine control ● image f ormation ● printer laser/scanner ● pick up/f eed The f ollowing figure is a b lock diagram of the printer unit: F igure 8 .
68 Functional overview EN E C U / pow e r syste m The ECU coordinates all print engine activities, drives the laser , and coordinates print data from the formatter with the image formation process. The ECU also includes po wer supply and distribution circuitr y .
EN ECU/power system 69 P r int e ngine control syste m P r inte r la se r/ sca nne r dr ive Based on inf ormation received from the f ormatter , the ECU sends signals to the laser/scanner assembly to modulate the laser diode “on” and “off” and to drive the laser/scanner motor .
70 Functional overview EN P o we r syste m ( on E C U ) The A C, DC , and high-voltage pow e r supply circuits are all contained within the ECU . AC pow e r distr ibution The A C pow er circuitry supplies AC v oltage whene v er the power cord is connected to the A C pow er source.
EN ECU/power system 71 H igh- volta ge pow e r distr ibution The high-vo ltage power supply PCA applies an o v erlap of DC and AC vo ltage to the primar y charging roller and the dev eloping roller . This circuit also applies a positiv e or negativ e DC voltage to the tr ansfer roller according to the instructions from the ECU.
72 Functional overview EN F or ma tte r syste m The f ormatter is responsible f or the f ollowing: ● controlling the document scanner ● f ormatting and controlling fax es ● f ormatting and contr.
EN Formatter system 73 R a ndom- a cce ss me mor y ( R AM ) ● One bank of RAM, which is batter y-back ed, stores parameters. Another two banks of RAM are used f or temporar y storage. ● DRAM (Dynamic RAM) provides tempor ar y storage of f ax, copy , scan, and print data.
74 Functional overview EN I ma ge for ma tion syste m Laser printing requires the interaction of se ver al different technologies (such as electronics, optics , and electrophotographics) to pro vide a printed page. Each process functions independently and must be coordinated with the other printer processes.
EN Image formation system 75 CA UTION The printer's toner car tridge does not include a light-bloc king shutter . Be careful to av oid e xposing the drum to light, which can per manently damage the drum. Protect the car tridge whenev er removing it from the printer .
76 Functional overview EN St ep 4: T r an s f er ri n g During the transf erring process, the toner image on the drum surf ace is transf erred to the paper . A positiv e charge applied to the back of the paper by the tr ansf er roller causes the negatively charged toner on the drum surface to be attr acted to the paper .
EN Printer feed system 77 P r inte r fe e d syste m Both the paper input bin and the single-sheet input slot merge into one, main input area. P aper placed in either of these areas enables the paper-out sensor (PS202), which inf or ms the ECU that paper is present.
78 Functional overview EN The f ollowing figure sho ws a simplified pr inter paper path. Fi g u r e 12. Si m p l i f i ed p ap er p at h 1 F ace-up output path 2 Document output suppor t 3 F ace-down .
EN Printer feed system 79 P a pe r ja m de te ction The paper out sensor (PS202), paper registration sensor (PS203), and the paper e x it sensor (PS201) detect paper moving through the HP LaserJet 3100/3150 product. If a paper jam is detected, the ECU immediately stops the printing process and displays a paper jam message on the control panel.
80 Functional overview EN S ole noid, photose nsors, a nd switche s The f ollowing figure sho ws the locations of the solenoid, photosensors, and s witches. F igure 1 3 . S ole noid, photose nsors, a nd switche s 2 1 3 4 7 8 5 6 1 Pic kup solenoid (SL1).
