The central processing unit (CPU) speed can be set for optimal performance or for optimal po wer conserv ation.
2–14 Hard w ar e and Softw ar e Guide Po w e r Dif ferent states may be used, depending on whether the notebook is running on external or battery po wer . After a power scheme has been set, no other intervention is required to control the performance of your notebook processor .

Po w e r Hard war e and Softwar e Guide 2–17 Po wer Meter displays battery stat us in both percentage and time: ■ The percentage indicates the amount of charge remaining in the battery pack. ■ The time indicates the approximate running time remaining on the battery pack if the battery pack continues to pr ovide power at the curr ent level.

K ey board and T ouchP ad Hard war e and Softwar e Guide 3–9 Most external monitors recei ve video information from the notebook using the external V GA video standard. The fn+f4 hotke y can also toggle images among other devices recei ving video information from the notebook.
3–10 Hard war e and Softwar e Guide K ey board and T ouchP ad The function of the fn+f5 hotkey can be changed. F or example, you can set the fn+f5 hotke y to initiate hibernation instead of standby . In all W indows operating system windo ws, references to the sleep button apply to the fn+f5 hotk ey .
K ey board and T ouchP ad Hard war e and Softwar e Guide 3–11 Dec rease Brightnes s (fn+f7) The fn+f7 hotkey decreases the brightness of the notebook screen. The longer you hold do wn the fn+f7 hotkey , the more the screen dims. Decreasing screen brightness conserves po wer .

An audio-out jack is also used to connect the audio functions of an audio/video de vice such as a te levision or VCR.
