F irs t- time setup Step 1 : Insert t he ba t ter y T o insert a primary battery: 1. T urn the computer upside down on a flat surface, with the battery bay to ward you. 2. Slide the battery 1 into the battery bay until it is seated. The battery release latches 2 automatically lock the battery into place.

4 T roubl eshooting T roubl eshooting resource s If you experience computer problems, perform these troubleshooting steps in the order provided until the problem is resolved: ■ Refer to “Quick troubleshooting, ” the next section in this chapter .
T r oubleshooting Qui c k troubleshootin g The compu ter is unab le to s tart u p T o turn on the computer , press the po wer b utton. When the computer is turned on, the po wer light turns on. If the computer and the po wer light are not turned on when you press the po wer button, adequate po wer may not be a v ailable to the computer .
Tro u b l e s h o o t i n g The compu ter sc reen is bl ank If the computer is on but the screen is blank: the computer may be in the Sleep state or in Hibernation; the computer may not be set to display the image on the computer screen; or the display switch may not be functioning properly .

Some de vices may not be po wered by the computer , and must be turned on before the computer is turned on.

A Conn ec t to t h e Internet from y our home The computer includes hardware and software that allo ws you to connect to the Internet. Before you can access the Internet, you must choose an Internet service provider (ISP) and choose the type of Internet connection you want, such as broadband (wired or wireless) or dial-up.
Connec t to the Internet f r om y our home Using t he N e w Connec tion Wizard The Ne w Connection W izard w orks under the following conditions: ■ Y ou already have an account with an ISP . ■ Y ou have a disc from an ISP . ■ Y ou do not have an Internet account and would lik e to select an ISP from the list provided within the wizard.

B B ac k up and reco v ery Creating reco v er y disc s After setting up the computer for the first time, be sure to create a set of recov ery discs of the full factory image. The reco very discs are used to start up (boot) the computer and recov er the operating system and software to factory settings in case of system instability or failure.
