4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the fo llowing tools to comple te the removal and replacement procedures: ● Flat-bladed screwdr.
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed i n their proper location s during the reassembly proces s. Improper ca ble placement can damage the computer. Cables must be handled with extr eme care to avoid damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic compo nents are sensit iv e to electrostatic disc harge (ESD). Circuitry design and structure determine the degree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these grounding guidelin es when packaging and transporting equipment : ● To avoid hand contact, transport produc ts in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts and as semblies with conductive or ap proved containers or packag ing.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equipment must include either a wr ist st rap or a foot st rap at a grounded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a gr ounded system. Wrist stra ps are flexible stra ps with a minimum of one megohm ±10 % resistance in the ground cords .
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides remova l and replace ment procedures . There are as many as 95 screws and screw locks, in 1 5 different sizes, that must be removed, replaced, or loosened when servic ing the comp uter. Make special no te of each screw and screw lo ck size and location during removal and replacement.
Computer feet The computer feet are adhesive-bac ked rubber pads. The feet are included in the Rubber Kit, sp are part number 646307-0 01 for HP ProB ook 4530s models and 646308-001. There are 4 rubber feet that attach to the base enclosure in the lo cations illustrated below.

4. Remove the optical drive (3) from the computer. 5. If it is necessary to replace the opt ical drive brac ket, position the optical drive with the rear toward you. 6. Remove the two Phillip s PM2.0×3.0 s crews (1) that secure the optical drive bracket to t he optical drive.
Hard drive NOTE: All hard drive spare part kits inc lude a hard drive bracket and scre ws. Description Spare part n umber 750-GB, 7200-rpm hard drive 633252-001 640-GB, 5400-rpm hard drive 603785-001 .
4. Remove the hard dri ve (3) from the hard drive bay. 5. If it is necessary to replace the hard drive bracket , remove the tape (1) that secures the My lar cover down onto the bracket, and th en lift to open the Mylar cover (2) . 6. Remove the two Phillips PM3.
Memory modules NOTE: Primary and ex pansion memory is installed in a stacked conf iguration in the bot tom of the computer. 3. Remove the memory module (2) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: Memory modules are de signed with a notch (3) to prevent incorrect i nsertion into the memory module slot. NOTE: The computer uses two memory sockets. The top socket ho uses the expansion memory module and is shown in the following image.

4. Insert a screwdriver or similar tool into th e gap near the WWAN module compartment and push to disen gage the k eyboard. 5. Position the computer uprigh t with the front toward you. 6. Open the computer as far as possib le. 7. Lift and rotate the keyboard (1) until it rests on the palm rest (2) .
10. Remove the keyboard (3) . Reverse this procedure to install the keyboard. Top cover Description Spare part n umber Top cover for use in model 4530s : With a fingerprint reader 646251-001 Without a fingerprint reader 646253-001 Before removing the top cover, follow these steps: 1.
Remove the top cover: 1. Position the computer upside-d own with the front t oward you. 2. Remove the following covers and screws th at secure the top cover to the computer: (1) 4 rubber screw covers (2) 10 Torx T8M2.5 ×6.0 screw s NOTE: The following image shows model 45 30s.
5. Remove the 6 Torx T8 M2.5×6.0 screws tha t secure the top cover to the comput er. NOTE: The following image shows model 4530s. 6. Remove the follo wing cables from the system board: ● Lift the c.
8. Insert a screwdriver through the holes in the bat tery bay and press to disengage the top cover from the computer. 9. Position the computer uprigh t with the front toward you.
12. Lift the connector latch (1) , discon nect the card read er cable (2) , and then lift the top cover from the comput er (3) . Reverse this procedure to install the top cover.

5. Rotate the Touchpad button board u pward (4) , and then remove it (5) . Reverse this procedure to install the card reader. Quick Launch board Description Spare part n umber Quick Launch board for use in 4530s models 646296-001 Before removing the Quick Launch board, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. 4. Lift the side of the board (3) , slide it out from under the tab, and then remove t he board from the top cove r (4) . Reverse this procedure to in stall the Quick Launch board. NOTE: Model 4530s show n below. 1. Position the top cover upside-d own with the front toward you. 2. Remove the Phillips PM2.0×4.0 scr ew (1) that secures the bo ard to th e top cover. 3. Lift the board up at an angle (2) , and then remove it from the top cover (3) .
Modem module NOTE: The modem module spare part kit does not include a modem module cable. The mod em module cable is included in the Cable Kit, sp are part number 646303-001 for 4530s mo dels. See Cable Kit on page 30 for more Cable Kit spare part number information.
4. Disconnect the modem module cable (3) from the modem module. Reverse this procedure to install the modem module. 78 Chapter 4 Removal and rep lacement procedures.
Lid switch Description Spare part n umber Lid switch for use in 4530s models 646289-001 Before removing the lid sw itch, follow these step s: 1. Shut down the computer. RJ-11 jack cable NOTE: The RJ-11 jack cable is included in the Cabl e Kit, spare part number 646303 -001 for 4530s models. Before removing the RJ-11 jack cable, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are uns ure whether the computer i s off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
4. Remove the RJ-11 jack from the cl ip built into the base enclosure (3) . Reverse this procedure to install the RJ- 11 jack cable. System board NOTE: All system board spare part kits include rep lacement thermal material.

5. Lift the system boar d up at an angle (4) to gain access to the cables und erneath. 6. On the bottom of the system boa rd, disconnect the battery connector cable (1) from the system board. 7. Disconnect the smaller power cable (2) and the larger power cabl e (3) from the system board.
RTC battery Description Spare part n umber RTC battery 449137-001 Before removing the RTC battery, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are uns ure whether the computer i s off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
3. Lift the battery from the system board (2 ) . Reverse this procedure to install the RTC battery. 90 Chapter 4 Removal and rep lacement procedures.
Fan Description Spare part n umber Fan 646285-001 Before removing the fan, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are uns ure whether the computer i s off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
4. Remove the fan from t he system board (3) . Reverse this procedure to install the fan. NOTE: To properly ventilate the computer, allow at leas t a 7.6-cm (3-in) clearance on the left side of the computer. The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation.

3. Remove the heat sink from the system board (5) . NOTE: For UMA models, thoroughly clean thermal mate rial from the surface of the system board (1) and heat sink (2) each time you remove the heat sink. A ll heat sink and processor spare part kits include thermal material.

Display assembly All display assemblies include WLAN antenna tr ansceivers and c ables. WWAN mode ls include 2 WWAN antenna tran sceivers and cables. 3. If necessary, disconnect the webcam cable (1) and displa y cable (2) from the system board, and then remove the cables from the cli p (3) . 100 Chapter 4 Removal and rep lacement procedures.
4. Remove the four Philli ps PM2.5×7.0 screws (1) from the hinges, and then remove the display from the comput er (2) . When installing the display assembly, be sure th at the wireless antenna cables are routed and arranged properly.
