Printing Basics lthough y our pr inter can do some pretty f ancy stuff, most of the time y ou’ll be printing words and pictures on paper . The process is simple: First choose the paper y ou want to .
2 H OW TO C HOOSE P APER Most plain photocopy paper w orks fine in your printer , particularly paper that is marked f or use in inkjet printer s. T o get the best results, use one of the Hewlett-P ackar d paper s, whic h were de veloped especially f or HP inks and your printer .
3 H OW TO P UT P APER IN THE P RINTER T ake a second to load the paper correctly in the IN dra wer . Make sure all the paper in the drawer is the same size and type, and that the paper adjusters rest sn ugl y against the paper . The printer will do the rest.
4 3 Put the paper in the IN dra wer , print side down. Push the paper in tow ard the bac k of the paper dra wer until it stops. 4 Slide the paper adjusters in so the y fit snugly against the edges of the paper . Make sure the paper still lies fl at in the dra wer and that the paper fits easily under the tab of the paper-length adjuster .
5 H OW TO P RINT 1 Check y our pr int settings in the HP print settings bo x. (See page 9 to find out how to get to the bo x.) If you’ re printing one cop y , on plain paper with por trait orientation, the def ault settings will work fine f or you.
6 While Y ou’re Printing It takes a f e w moments f or the printing to star t, while the printer gets inf orma- tion from the computer . Even after it’ s star ted printing, the printer might pause occasionally to receiv e more inf ormation. If you run out of paper before you’ve finished The printer will prompt you to add more paper .
7 T roubleshooting If a problem occurs during printing, y ou’ll see a message on y our screen telling you what’ s wrong and how to fix it. If you don’t get a message b ut you notice that someth.

14 H OW TO P RINT ON D IFFERENT P APER S IZES Most of the time, when y ou print on plain paper , car ds, labels, and en velopes, you select one of the standar d sizes in the P aper Size bo x on the Setup tab of the HP print settings bo x. But y ou’re not limited to the sizes listed.
15 Paper Pointers C HANGE THE SHAPE Even though y ou pr int on flat paper , there’ s no reason to leav e it that wa y . Buy an origami book and learn to change the shape of your printed paper . Or add shape to your printed piece by gluing small charms, buttons, or dried flowers onto card stock.
16 H OW TO P RINT ON B OTH S IDES OF THE P APER The easiest wa y to sa ve paper is to print on both sides of it. Just put the paper thr ough the printer twice: Select a two-sided printing option and follo w the directions on y our screen. 1 Load the paper in the IN dra wer .
17 What If B OTH PAGES PRINTED ON ONE SIDE OF THE PAPER Y ou put the paper print side down when you replaced it in the printer . Pr int y our document again, pa y- ing special attention to the instructions on your screen. T HE INK SMEARED The ink might not hav e dr ied completely , so wait a bit longer bef ore you print the second side.
18 H OW TO F LIP A D OCUMENT When y ou print a flipped document, the text and pictures are fl ipped horizontally (mirr ored) from what y ou see on y our computer screen. 1 Load the paper in the IN dra wer . If you’ re printing on transparencies , see page 31.
19 What If T HE PRINTED COLORS DON ’ T MATCH THE SCREEN COLORS Because of the ph ysics of ho w color is made on screen (with light) and at the printer (with dyes and pigments), there might be a slight mismatch. T HE COLORS AREN ’ T AS VIVID AS THEY SHOULD BE Y ou might be printing on the wrong side of the paper .
20 Adjusting the Color Like a full-f eatured camera, your printer can “autofocus , ” using HP’ s ColorSmar t technology to automatically mak e adjustments that will give you the best quality color printing.
21 Handy Hints N EED A PICTURE ? Look through com- puter magazines f or the names of companies that sell clip ar t. They’ll be happ y to send y ou full-color pictures of their e xtensiv e off erings. Or browse in the ar t sections of bookstores f or books of cop yright- free pictures.
22 ■ Get your photos scanned at y our local camera shop . F or a small f ee , y ou can hav e an entire roll of pictures put on a CD-ROM disk. Be sure to ask your camer a shop to also put a CD-vie wing application on the disk with your pictures . ■ T ake a digital picture .
23 Handy Hints S OME LETTERS LOOK LIKE PICTURES Wingdings are symbol (or picture) f onts that y ou type using the letter or number k e ys on your k eyboard.
24 Using Fonts Many softw are prog rams include a F ont command that lists the a v ailable f onts . Usually you’ll select the te xt and apply the font (or include the f ont as par t of a style definition). See the user’ s guide for the prog ram you’ re using to find out how to select f onts for y our text.
What Y ou Can Print ith the printing basics down, y ou’ re ready f or some results. Here are some ideas of what y our printer can pr int on diff erent media types: ■ One en v elope at a time or a stac k of en v elopes. ■ Labels—label y our file folders or get those monthly mass mailings out the door .
Getting Help When Things Go W r ong hen prob lems occur , the quic kest w ay to find a solution is to use the online troub leshooting f eature. With a f ew clic ks of the mouse b utton, you’ll find y our specific problem and details on how to fix it.

42 No page came out of the printer Be patient. Complex documents, such as color photographs , take a while to print. Check the P ower light; if it’ s blinking, the printer is processing inf or mation. P ower . Make sure the printer is on (the P ower light on the front of your printer should be on) and that all connections are firm.
43 The print quality is poor Banner switch. Mak e sure the banner switch is down, unless y ou’ re pr inting banners. P aper . If the pr inting is f aded or the colors are dull or bleeding into each .
44 P RINTER C OMMUNICATIONS Y our printer does not inc lude a printer cab le. The HP IEEE-1284 Com- pliant P arallel Interface Cab le is best for y our printer . Make sure the cable is bidirectional—that is, that it allows tw o-way communication between y our printer and the computer .

26 E NVELOPES Y our printer pr o vides two methods f or printing en velopes: ■ If you’ re printing a single env elope, you can use the single-en velope slot and leav e your paper in the IN dra wer . This allows you to print the env elope and then a letter .
27 What If T HE PRINTER WON ’ T PICK UP THE ENVELOPE If you’ re printing a single env elope using the single- env elope slot, you might not hav e pushed the env elope f ar enough into the printer . If you’ re pr int- ing a stack of en ve- lopes, y ou might hav e included too many in the stack.
28 4 Slide the paper adjusters so that the y fit snugly against the edges of the env elope. Small Envelopes If you’ re printing on small env elopes such as A2 or C6, you’ll need to push the sliding adjuster in until it fits sn ugly against the edge of the env elopes.
29 Paper Pointers L ABELS THAT WORK Use only U .S. Letter or A4-sized sheets of labels. It’ s par ticu- larly impor tant to pick labels that are made especially f or inkjet printers. Otherwise, labels could peel off in your printer or the ink might not dr y .
30 3 Remov e all paper from the IN draw er and inser t up to 20 label sheets . 4 Slide the green paper adjusters in to fi t snugly against the stac k. 5 Push the IN dra wer bac k in and flip the OUT tra y down. 6 Print the labels. ■ Y ou can lea ve the settings as the y are if you’ re going to be printing on plain paper .
31 Paper Pointers Y OUR BEST BET The film coating on HP Premium T rans- parency Film has been especially de v eloped to wor k with HP inks, giving you crisp images and te xt and the f astest dr ying times . The y won’t jam y our printer , either . Look f or them at large office supply stores, or call HP Direct (see page 53).
