Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be s u re that cables are placed in th eir proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the computer. Cables must be handled with extreme care to avoid damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic dis charge damage Electronic components are sensitive to electrostati c discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and structure determine the degree of sensitivity.
Packaging and transpor ting guidelines Follow these grounding gu idelines when packaging an d transporting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sen sitive parts and assembli es with conductive or approved containers or packaging.

Display subcomponents (b ezel, webcamera, panel) This section describes removing dis play subcomponent s that do not require th at you remove the ent ire display assembly from the computer. You can remove the display bezel, webcam/microphone module , and display panel while the display assembl y is still attached to the computer.
b. Remove the display bezel (6) . c. Remove the four Phillips M2.0×2. 5 screws (1 ) and lif t the top edge of the di splay panel (2) . d. Carefully move the display panel (1) to the keyboard.
e. Release the tab and dis connect th e display panel cable connector (2) . Lift the panel (3) to remove it. 3. To remove the webcamera/microphone module: a. Position the display assembly with the top edge toward you. b. Disconnect the cable (1) from the module.
c. Lift to disengage the adhesive that secures th e webcamera/microphone module to the display (2) . Reverse this procedure to replace the display ass embly subcomponents.

2. Pry the feet up to remove the adhesive that s ecures them to the computer. 3. Remove the two Phillips M2.5x1.5 scr ews that secure the rear corner covers (1) . Remove the rear corner cover s (2) . The rear corner covers are in cluded in the Plastics Kit, spare part number 767371-001.
4. Remove the eight Phillips M2.5×4.0 screws that secure the top c over to the base enclosure. 5. Remove the three Phillips PM 4.5×2.0 broad head screws (1) in the optical drive bay that secure the top cover to the computer. 6. Remove the two Phillips M2.
10. Disconnect the power button cable (2 ) , the fingerprint reader cable (3) , the keyboard cable (4) an d the TouchPad cable (5) . Lift to remove the top cover (6) .
Hard drive NOTE: The hard drive spare part kit does not include th e hard drive rubber bracket, hard drive connector cable, or screws. Thes e co mponents are included i n the Hard Drive Hardware Kit, spare part number 767247-001. Description Spare part number 500 GB, 5400 rpm, 9.
2. Disconnect the hard drive ca ble from the system board (1) . 3. Lift up the front of the hard drive (2) , and then remo ve the hard drive (3) . 4. If it is necessary to disassemble the ha rd drive, perform the following steps: a. Disconnect the hard drive cable connector from the hard drive (1) .
b. Remove the brac kets (2) from the hard drive. Reverse this procedure to reassem ble and install the hard drive. Component replacement procedures 45.

Display assembly This section describes removing th e display assembly i n its entirety and disassembli ng all the display subcomponents. If you only need to remove the display bezel , webcam era/microphone module, or display panel, you do not need to remove the entire dis play assembly from th e computer.
4. Remove the display as sembly (4) . If it is necessary to replace any of the display assembly subcomponents: 1. To remove the bezel on non-touch screen models: The display bezel for non-touc h models is available usin g spare part number 767365-001.
c. Remove the display bezel (6) . 2. To remove the bezel on tou ch screen models: a. Lift to separate and then rotate the top of the display bezel upward (1) .
b. Carefully move the display panel (1) to the keyboard. c. Release the tab and dis connect th e display panel cable connector (2) . Lift the panel (3) to remove it.
4. If it is necessary to replace th e webcamera/ microphone module: The webcam is available using spare part number 762521-001 for non-touch models and 7675 45-001 for touch models. a. Disconnect the webcamera/ mi crophone module cable (1) from the webcamera/microphone module.
c. Remove the hinges (3) from the display enclosure. 6. If it is necessary to replace the hinges on a touch panel: The hinges are available using spare part n umber 767249-001 for touch models. a. Remove the four top screws (1) from the di splay hinges.
767367-001: FHD touch screen models a. Release the display panel cable from the clips (1) and routing channe l built into the display enclosure. b. Carefully release the cable from the channel guides, and remove the display panel c able (2) .
b. Remove the wireless antenna cables and transceivers (2) . 9. If it is necessary to replace the wirele ss ante nna cables and transceivers on a touch panel: a. Release the wireless antenna transceivers (1) from the display back cover. (The wireless antenna transceivers are attached to the displ ay back cover wi th double-sided tape.
7 Using Setup Utility (BIOS) and HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) in Windows 8.1 Setup Utility, or Basic Input/Output System (BIOS), co ntrols communication between all the input and output devices on the system (such as disk drives, display, keyboard, mouse, and prin ter).
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the compute r or an unsuccessful installation, download and install a BIOS update only when the computer is c onnected to reliable exte rnal power using the AC adapte r.
To start HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI: 1. Turn on or restart the computer, quickly pres s esc , and the n press f2 . The BIOS searches three places for the diag no stic tools, in the following orde r: a.

1. Select Start > Help and Support > Maintain . 2. Follow the on-screen instructions to identify your computer and access the BIOS update you want to download. 3. At the do wnload area, f ollow these steps: a. Identify the BIOS update that is later than the BIOS version curr ently installed on your computer.

10 Backing up, restoring, and recovering in Windows 8.1 This chapter provides informatio n about the follo wing processes: ● Creating recovery media and backups ● Restoring and recovering your system Creating recovery media and backups 1. After you successfully set up the computer, create HP Recove ry medi a.
● If your computer does not include an integrated opti cal drive with DVD writer capability, but you would like to create DVD recovery media, you can use an external optical drive (purchased separately) to create recovery discs, or you can obtain recover y discs for your computer from support.
● If you have replaced the hard drive, you can use the Factory Reset option of HP Recovery medi a to restore the factory image to the replace m ent drive.
1. Press f11 while the computer boots. – or – Press and hold f11 as you press the power button. 2. Select Troubleshoot from the boot options menu. 3. Select Recovery Manager , and then follow the on-screen instructions . Using HP Recovery media to recover You can use HP Recovery media to recove r the original sy stem.
11 Backing up, restoring, and recovering in Windows 7 Your computer includes tools provided by the op erating system and HP to help you safeguard your information and retrieve it if ever needed. Creating backups 1. Use HP Recovery Manager to cre ate recovery me dia immediately after you set up the working computer.
Creating the recovery media 1. Select Start and type recovery in the search field. Select Recovery Manager from the list. Allow the action to continue , if prompted. 2. Click Recovery Media Creation . 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to continue. To recover, see Reco vering the original sys tem using HP Recovery Manager on page 90 .
Tips for a successful backup ● Number backup discs before ins ert ing them into the optical drive. ● Store personal files in the Documents, Music, Pict ures, and Videos libraries, and back up these folders periodically. ● Save customized settings in a wind ow, toolbar, or menu bar by taki ng a screen shot of your settings.
Restore and recovery Restoring to a previous system restore point Sometimes installi ng a software program causes your computer or Windows to behave unpredictably.
● If the recovery media do not work, you can obtain recovery discs for your system from the HP website. ● The Minimized Image Re covery option is recomme nde d for advanced users only. All hardware-related drivers and software are re-install ed, but other software applications are not.

12 Power cord set requirements The wide-range input feature of the computer permits it to operate fr om any line voltage from 100 to 120 V ac, or from 220 to 240 V ac.
