4 Removal and replacement procedures CAUTION: The user-replaceable parts for this computer are: AC adapter Battery Keyboard For all parts that ar e not user-replaceable, only HP authorized service providers sh ould perform the removal an d replacement p rocedures de scribed here .
Cables must b e handled with extre me care to avoid damage. Apply only the tension required to unseat or seat the cables during removal and insertion. Ha ndle cables by the connector whenever possible. In all cases, avoid bending, twisting, or tearing cables.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the computer when you are removing or instal ling internal components, observe these precaution s: Keep components in their e lectr ostatic-safe containers until you are ready to install them. Before touching an electr onic compone nt, discha rge static el ectr icity by using the guidelines described in this section.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these grounding guidelines when packagin g and transporting equipment: ● To avoid hand co ntact, transport pr oducts in static-safe tube s, bags , or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive part s and assemblies with co nductive or approved co ntainers or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equipment must include either a wrist st rap or a foot strap at a grounded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a gr ounded system. Wrist straps are flexible straps with a minimum of one megohm ±10% resistance in the ground cords.
Service label When ordering parts or requesting information, provide the computer serial number and model number provided on the service label. The service label is located on the bottom of the computer. NOTE: Your label may look slightly diff erent from the illustr ation in this section.

Before removing the display panel, follow thes e steps: 1. Shut down the computer. 2. Disconnect all external device s connected to the computer. 3. Disconnect the power from the computer by firs t unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer.
3. Remove the display bezel (4) . 4. Remove the four Phillips sc rews for the display panel. 5. Move the panel towa rd the keyboard (1) . NOTE: Support the display panel as you lean the panel forward. 6. Release the ad hesive support s trip (2) that secures the displa y panel cable connector to the display panel.
7. Disconnect the display panel cable (3) from the display panel, and then remove the panel (4) . Reverse this procedure to replace the panel. Keyboard NOTE: The keyboard spare part kit incl udes a keyboard cab le.

Remove the keyboard: 1. Remove the two Phillips sc rews that secure the keyboard to the computer. 2. Turn the computer right-side up with the fron t toward you. Open the display and stand the computer on its right side. Insert a thin tool th rough the keyboard access hole.
3. Turn the computer right-side up with th e front toward you an d open th e display. 4. Gently slide your finger along the top edge of th e keyboard to re lease the keyboard clips.
5. Tilt the keyboard forw ard (1) onto the palm rest. Release the zero insertion force (ZIF) connector (2) to which the keyboard cabl e is attached, and then disc onnect the keyboard cable (3) from the system board. 6. Remove the keyboard. Reverse this procedure to install the keyboard.
Before removing the top cover, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. 2. Disconnect all external device s connected to the computer. 3. Disconnect the power from the computer by firs t unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer.
2. Disconnect the power button cable (1) and t he TouchPad cable (2) . 3. Close the display and turn the computer upside down. 4. Remove the eight Philli ps screws from the bottom of the computer.
6. Gently lift around the edges of the top cover (1) and lift to remove the top cover (2) . When replacing the top cover, be sure th at the Power button board and cable (see Powe r button board on page 54 ). are removed from th e defective top cover and installed on the replacement top cover.
Remove the p ower button bo ard: 1. Turn the top cover upside down, with the front toward you. 2. Remove the Phillips screw (1) and tape that secure the powe r button board to the top cover. 3. Release the clips, lift the power button board (2) , and carefully slide the power button cable out from the guides (3) to remove the power button board.
Hard drive NOTE: The hard drive spare part kit does not include th e ha rd drive cable, or hard drive bracket and screws. Description Spare part n umber 9.
Remove the hard drive: 1. Disconnect the USB cable on top of the hard drive from the compu ter. NOTE: If it is necessary to rep lace the hard drive cable, see System board on page 63 . 2. Remove the two Phillips screws (1) . Lift the hard drive (2) to remove and disconnect the hard drive cable (3) .
3. Remove the four Phillips scr ews (1) , and then remove the bracket (2) from the hard drive. To install a hard drive, re verse the removal procedure.

Remove the WLAN module: 1. Disconnect the WLAN antenna cables (1) from the terminals on the WLAN module. NOTE: The 1/black WLAN antenna cab le is connected to the WLAN mod ule 1/Main terminal. The 2/white WLAN antenna cable is connect ed to the WLAN modu le 2/Aux terminal.
3. Remove the WLAN module by pulling the mo dule away from the slot at an angle (3) . NOTE: The WLAN module is designed with a no tc h to prevent incorrect install ation into the WLAN module so cket.

Memory module WARNING! To reduc e the risk of e lectric shock and damage to the equipment, unplug the power cord and remove all batteries befo re installing a memory module.
3. Remove the memory module (2) by pulling it away from the slot at an angle. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory module , hold the memory module by the edges only. Do not touch the components on the memory module. CAUTION: To protect a memory module after remova l, place it in an electrostatic-safe container.
2. Press down on the left and righ t sides of the memory module (2) until the side retention clips snap back into place. 3. Reverse the previous removal steps to replace the following items: ● Syste.

2. Remove the heat sink. If you have an UMA graphics heat sink, go to step c. a. Loosen all of the captive screws (1) and (2) and then lift the s witchable dis crete graphics heat sink (3) from the system board. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the cooling tube s, do not lift the assembly by the cooling tubes.
b. Thoroughly clean the thermal connections (1), (3) on the syst em board and the heat sink (2), (4) before replacing a heat sink onto a system board. Continue to step 3. c. Loosen the captive screws (1) and lift the UMA graphics he at sink (2) from the system board.
Fan Description Spare part n umber Fan 697914-001 IMPORTANT: Make special note of each screw and scre w lock size and loca tion during removal and replacement. Before removing the fan, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. 2. Disconnect all external device s connected to the computer.

▲ Gently release the wires (1) routed along the top of the base en closure and lift both pieces of the speaker assembly (2) . Reverse this procedure to install the speaker as sembly on the base enclos ure.
Remove the RJ-45 cover: 1. Remove the Phillips M screw (1) for the RJ-45 cover. 2. Lift the RJ-45 asse mbly (2) to remove it from the base enclosure. Reverse these procedures to re place the RJ-45 assembly. Display Assembly Description Spare part n umber 39.

4. If it is necessary to re place the wirele ss antenna cabl es and transceive rs: a. Release the wireless antenna cables from the clip s (1) built into the display enclosure. b. Release the wireless antenna transceivers (2) from the display enclosure.
10. Remove the system bo ard (se e Syste m boar d on page 63 ). 11. Remove the display assembly (see Display panel on page 44 ). Remove the power connector: NOTE: The power connector screw and bracket were removed during the process to remove the system boar d.
5 Using Windows 8 Setup Utility (BIOS) and System Diagnostics Setup Utility, or Basic Input/Outp u t System (BIOS), controls communication between all the inp ut and output devices on the s ystem (such as d isk drives, display, keyboard, mouse, and printer).
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to t he comput er or an unsuccessful ins tallation, download and install a BIOS update only when the computer is connected to reliable e xternal power using the AC adapter.
Using System Diagnostics System Diagnostics allows you to run diag nostic tests to determine if the computer hardware is functioning properly. To start System Diagnostics: 1. Turn on or restart the computer, quickly press esc , and the n press f2 . 2.
6 Using Ubuntu Linux Setup Utility (BIOS) and System Diagnostics Setup Utility, or Basic Input/Outp u t System (BIOS), controls communication between all the inp ut and output devices on the s ystem (such as d isk drives, display, keyboard, mouse, and printer).
● To close a text box or return to the menu display, press esc . ● To display additional navigation and selection information while Setup Utility is open, press f1 .
Determining the BIOS version To determine whe ther available BIOS updates co ntain later BIOS versions than those cur rently instal led on the computer, you need to know the version of the system BIOS currently installed. BIOS version information (also known as ROM date and System BIOS ) can be displayed by using Setup Utility.
Using System Diagnostics System Diagnostics allows you to run diag nostic tests to determine if the computer hardware is functioning properly. To start System Diagnostics: 1. Turn on or restart the comput er. While the “Press the ESC key for St artup Menu” m essage is displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen, press esc .
