Using Paper D- 1 Using Paper D Using Paper The D640 pr ints on a vari ety of print media, includ ing paper, l abels, and over head transparenci es, at up to 600 x 600 dots per inch ( dpi). Note The D640 does not accept envelopes as print medi a. The D640 printer uses laser electrophotogr aphic technologies.
Paper M anufactur ing D-2 Using Pa per In the United States, Hewlett-Packard also offers suppo rt through a local support representative. A customer support technician will be hap py to offer ad vice to help solve you r printer operation p rob lems.
Media Selec ti on Speci fic ati ons and Guide li nes Using Paper D- 3 Using Paper Cast Su rfaces When a very smooth surface is required , a clay and water solution is app lied to the pape r, and is then “cast” under high temperatures.
Media Select i on Spe cif icat ions and Gu ide li nes D-4 Using Pa per Recommend ations to the Custom er Hewlett-Packard D640 pr inters are designed to be as flexible as possible in the types of print media they can use.
Media Selec ti on Speci fic ati ons and Guide li nes Using Paper D- 5 Using Paper Basi s Wei ght Basis weight is an importa nt characteristic to consider because, paper th at is too light or too heavy may cau se misfeeds, mis-stacking, p aper jams, or ex cessive mechanical wear.
Media Select i on Spe cif icat ions and Gu ide li nes D-6 Using Pa per Curl Curl is curvature in a sheet of paper. Curl is typically measured by laying the sheet of paper on a flat surface, with the corners up, an d measuring the height of the corners.
Media Selec ti on Speci fic ati ons and Guide li nes Using Paper D- 7 Using Paper Potential Problems Some text ures improv e paper feeding wh ile others hinder the feed operation. T oo smooth or too rough paper can caus e a variety of problems in D640 printers .
Media Select i on Spe cif icat ions and Gu ide li nes D-8 Using Pa per The environmental co nditions required to m aintain the pro p er moisture content is 68 ° F to 75 ° F ( 20 ° C to 24 ° C) with a relative humidity of 45 % to 55%. The HP standa rd for mo ist ure content i s 4.
Underst anding Pa per Ream L abels Using Paper D- 9 Using Paper Understanding Pap er Ream Labels Figure D-2, shown bel ow, is an example of a typical label from a ream of paper. It includes much of t he infor mation abou t paper us e and paper s pecifications .
Genera l Guidel ines D-10 Using Pa per Note It is possible that paper could meet all of the g eneral specifications lis ted in this table and still not print satisfactorily becau se of the printing environ ment or other var iables over which Hewlett-Packard has no control.
Genera l Guide lines Using Paper D-1 1 Using Paper Pre-pri nted Forms and L etterhead To avoi d multip le feeding and jamming pro blems when using pre-p rinted form s, embo ssed paper, and letterh ead, obs erve t he follow in g guideli nes: • Do no t us e low - temp erat ur e inks (the ki nd us ed wit h som e types of ther mogr aphy ).
Genera l Guidel ines D-12 Using Pa per Adhesive Labels For the purposes of this specification, a label is defined as paper with a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing. Label stock includes the top or face sheet, the adhesive, and the liner or carrier sheet, also referred to as the backing.
Genera l Guide lines Using Paper D-1 3 Using Paper Note It is possib le th at la bels coul d meet all of t he general specificat ions l isted in "Adhes ive Label arrangements" and still not pr int satisfactorily because of the printing env ironment or other variables ov er which Hewlett-Packard has no control.
Genera l Guidel ines D-14 Using Pa per Refer to Purcha sing in the nex t section for ordering HP transparencies. Recycled Paper Recycled paper is a combination of waste paper , pre-consumer waste, and post-consumer waste. Print ed waste paper i s usually washed to remove mos t of the i nks and other contaminants.
Genera l Guide lines Using Paper D-1 5 Using Paper Paper with Cutouts or Pe rforations Hewlett-Packard does not reco mmend using paper with cutouts or perfo rations because they often cau se paper hand ling proble ms and may cau se printer damage.
Purcha sing, Handling, and St oring D-16 Using Pa per Othe r Spe cia l Med ia Odd sizes Check mini mum and maximu m supported sizes in Figu re 3-4, Pap er Sizes quick r efer- ence, on pag e 3-4. Carbonless Paper Carbonl ess paper (NCR) is not s upported by D640 pr inter.
Purchasi ng, Han dling, and Storin g Using Paper D-1 7 Using Paper Purchasi ng Information In the United S tates, Hewlett-Packard supplies labe ls through HP SafetyNet (to ordering labels in Europe, c ontact your local HP sales offi ce).
Purcha sing, Handling, and St oring D-18 Using Pa per Storing Adhere to the foll owing guid elin es when stackin g and storing prin t media: • DO NOT store cartons o f reams directly on the floor; cartons shou ld be placed on a pallet or on s helves.
Purchasi ng, Han dling, and Storin g Using Paper D-1 9 Using Paper Acclimatizing paper to the “best performance con ditions” described above minimizes these adverse affects, but exposu re to tem peratur e and hu midity extrem es will ev entually make acclimatization impossible.
Troubleshoo ting D-20 Using Pa per Trou bleshoo ting Paper problems are somewhat d ifficult to detect. A series of steps will help isol ate paper- induced problems.
Troubleshoo tin g Using Paper D-2 1 Using Paper Determin e if the Problem is Due to Duplexing The duplexing featu re may have both p aper feed prob lem s and print quality problems as a resu lt of pri nting on p aper that has just made a pass throu gh the pr inter (resu lting in i ncreased paper c url).
Troubleshoo ting D-22 Using Pa per Is the Pr inter Exper iencing Mi sfeeds? The following ar e some possible causes in misfeeds. • Paper may be too stiff. Check basis weight and measure caliper. • Paper may be too sm ooth or to o rough. C heck the fin ish.
Troubleshoo tin g Using Paper D-2 3 Using Paper • Syntheti c paper • Coated paper • Other special media Refer to Tabl e D-4, “Recomme nded paper s pecifications,” o n page D-10 for a t able of recommended media specifications.
Troubleshoo ting D-24 Using Pa per Paper Storage Envir onment Paper storage and h andling is as important as the pap er-making process itself. Paper storage environment co nditions directly affect the f eed operation. Do not purch ase more media t han you can use i n a short t ime (3 mon ths).
