Insert a straightene d paper clip (1) into the release access op ening in the b ezel.
6. Press the rel ease tab (2) and remove the bezel from the t ab side (3) . 7. Remove the bezel (4) from the ODD. Reverse this procedure to rea ssemble an d install the o ptical drive. Hard dr ive NOTE: If your replacement hard drive was shipped with out an operat ing system installed, you will need to install it using the system recovery di scs.

Memory module WARNING! To reduce the risk of electric shock and damage to the e quipment, unplug the power cord and remove all batteries be fore installing a memory module.
2. Remove the memory module (2) by pulling it away from the slot a t an angle. CAUTION: T o prevent damage to the memory modul e, hold the memory module by the edges only. Do not to uch the compo nents on th e memory module. CAUTION: T o protect a memory module after removal, p lace it in an electrostatic-safe container.
5. Gently press the memory module (3) down, applyi ng pressure to both the left and right ed ges of the module, until the retentio n clips snap into p lace.

3. Remove the WLAN modu le by pulling the module away from the slot a t an angle (3) . NOTE: The WLAN module is design ed with a notc h to prevent incorrect in stallation into the WLAN module socket. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the WLAN module.

3. Disconnect th e power from the comp uter by firs t unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unpl ugging the AC adap ter from the compute r. 4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 32 ). 5. Remove the service door (see Service door on page 33 ).
4. Using a thin, non-co nductive tool, pr ess on the back of the ke yboard through th e release access hole until the keyboard disen gages from the compute r.
7. Release the zero inserti on force (ZIF) conne ctor (1) to which the keyboard cabl e is attached, an d then disconnect the keyb oard cable (2) from the system board.

Remove th e top cov er: 1. Disconnect these cables from the system board: (1) Power button board Z IF cable (2) Speaker ca ble (3) TouchPad button board ZIF cable 2. Remove the following scre ws under th e keyboard: (1) Five PM 2.5 x 4.0 (2) One PM 2 .
5. Remove the followi ng Nine PM 2.5 x 6.5 screws that secure the top cover to the computer. 6. Turn the computer right-side up, with the front toward you. 7. Open the computer. 8. Lift the front edge of the top cover (1) until the left and right sid es disengage from the base en closure.

Release the tape securing the power button bo ard cable and remo ve the power bu tton board and cable.

5. Lift the TouchPad button board (4) slightly to perform the next step. 6. Carefully invert the Touch Pad button bo ard (1) . 7. Release the ZIF conne ctor to which th e TouchP ad LED board ca ble is connected, and the n disconnect the TouchPad L ED board cable (2) from the TouchP ad button board.
Before removing the TouchPad LED board, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.

2. Release the wireless an tenna cables (2) from th e clips and the open ing in the base enclos ure. NOTE: It may be nece ssary to release the USB bo ard ZIF cable to remove the wireless antenna cables. CAUTION: Su pport the di splay assembly when removing th e following screws.
5. If it is necessary to replace the display bezel or any of the displa y assembly sub-componen ts: a. Remove the plastic screw covers (1) and the two PM 2.
c. Remove the webcam/microphon e module. 7. If it is necessary to replace the display panel: a. Remove the six PM 2.5 × 6.0 screws that secu re the display panel to the display enclo sure.
b. The hinge covers are held in place b y two of the same screws as the display hin ges. Using a small tool to pry, remove the hing e covers. c. Lift the top edge o f the display enclosure , (1) and then swing it up and forward until it is perpendicular to the display panel.
8. If it is necessary to replac e the display hing es: a. Remove the four PM 2.0 × 3.0 screws (1) that secure th e display hin ges to the display panel. b. Remove the display hinge s (2) . The display hinges include the d isplay hinges and brackets 9.
10. If it is necessary to replace the wi reless antenna cable s and transceivers: a. Release the wireless antenna cabl es from the clips (1) built into the display enclosure. b. Release the wireless antenna transceivers (2) from the display enclosure.
9. Remove the top cover (see Top cover on page 48 ). 10. Remove the system board (see System board on page 66 ). Remove the optical dr ive cable: 1. Release the optical drive cable from the clips built into th e base enclosure.
8. Remove the keyboard (see Keyboard on page 44 ). 9. Remove the top cover (see Top cover on page 48 ). Remove the USB board: 1. If not released already, release the ZIF connector (1) to which th e USB board cable is connected, and th en disconnect the U SB board cable fro m the system board.

1. If it is ne cessar y to repl ace the fa n, turn the fan and heat sin k upside down with the fan toward y ou. 2. Remove the two PM 1.5 × 2.5 screws (1) that secure the fan to the heat sink and remove the tw o clips that secure the fan to the heat sink.

Displaying system information 1. Start Setup Utility. 2. Select the Main menu. Updating the BIOS Updated versions of the BIOS may be availabl e on the HP Web site . Most BIOS update s on the HP Web site are package d in compressed files cal led SoftPaqs . Some download packa ges contain a file n amed Read me.txt, which contains information regarding installing and troubleshooting the file.
BIOS installation procedures vary . Follow any instructions that are d isplayed on th e screen after the download is complete. If no instructions are d isplayed, follow these steps: 1. Windows-7 —Open Windows Explorer by selecting Start > Co mputer .
7 Backing up, restoring, and recovering Your computer includes t ools provided by the operating system and HP to help you safeguard your information and re trieve it if ever needed. Creating backups 1. Use HP Recovery Manage r to create re covery media immediately after you set up the working computer.
Creating the r ecovery media 1. Select Start and type recovery in the sear ch field. Select Reco very Mana ger from the list. Allow the action to continue, if prom pted. 2. Click Recovery Media Creation . 3. Follow the on-screen instru ctions to continue.
Tips for a successful backup ● Number backup discs befo re inserting them into the optical drive. ● Store person al files in the Documen ts, Music, Pictures, and Videos libraries, and ba ck up these folders periodically. ● Save customized sett ings in a win dow, toolbar, or menu bar by taking a scre en shot of your settings.
To restore, see Restoring specific file s using Window s Backup and Res tore on page 88 . Restore and recovery Restoring to a previou s system restore point Sometimes installing a softw are program causes your computer or Windows to behave unpredictably.
● If the recovery media do not work, you can obta in recovery discs for your system from the H P website. ● The Minimized Image Reco very option is recommende d for advanced users o nly. All hardware- related drivers an d software are re- installed, bu t other software applications are not.
To change the boot o rder for a recovery flash drive: 1. Insert the flash drive into a USB port. 2. Restart the computer. 3. Press esc while the computer is re starting, and then press f9 fo r boot options. 4. Select the flash drive from th e boot options window.
