4 Maintaining your computer Cleaning procedures Keeping your computer system free of du st, dirt, and heat will prolong its life. ● Dust, pet hair, and othe r particles can build up , creat ing a blanket effect; as a result, compo nents can overheat or, in the ca se of the keyboard and mouse, not work smoothly and effectively.
Cleaning the keyboar d and mouse When cleaning the keyboard ke ys, use a low setting on a battery- powered vacuum cleaner, to avoid removing key cap s and springs. 1. Vacuum between the keys of the keybo ard and along the grooves. 2. Use a clean, dry cloth and iso propyl (rubbing) alcoho l to clean buildup on the keyboard keys and along its edges.
5 Troubleshooting Refer to the docu mentation pr ovided by the product ma nufacturer for inform ation about peripheral-spe cific problems, such as issues w ith a monitor or a print er. The following t ables present some issues you might encount er while installing, starting up, or usi ng your computer and po ssible solutio ns.
Symptom Possible solution Computer seems to be locked up and is not resp onding. Use the Task Manager to clos e any programs not respond ing, or restar t the computer: 1. Press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys on the keyboard simultaneously. 2. Select Task Manager .
Display (monitor) Symptom Possible solution Screen is blank. Press th e space bar on the ke yboard or move the mouse to make the screen display visible again. Press the Sleep button (select models only) , or Esc on the keyboard, to resu me from Sleep mode.
Keyboard and mouse (wireless) Symptom Possible solution Wireless keyboard or mouse does not work or is not detected. ● Ensure that you are using the wireless keyboard or wireless mo use within range of the receiver, approximately 3 meters (10 f eet) for normal use, and within 30 cm (12 inches) during initial setup or for re -synchronization.
Speakers and sound Symptom Possible solution No sound is produced. 1. From the Start screen, type c , select Control Panel , and then select Syst em and Security . 2. Under Action Center , select Troubleshoo t common computer probl ems , and then select Troubleshoo t audio playback .

Updating device driver s Complete the following pr ocedure to update a driver, or to revert to an ea rlier version of the driver if the new one does not solve your problem: 1. From the Start screen, type c and then select Control Panel . 2. Select System and Security , and then in the System area , select Device Manager .
Software program and hardware driver reinstallation If any of your factory-install ed software programs or hardware drivers are damaged, you can reinstall them by using the Reco very Manager program (s elect models only).
