1 Scanner overview This user guide covers what you need to know about using the H P Scanjet N8 400 series scanner. • What you can do with the scan ner • Scanner hardware • Scanner software • Where to get a dditional in formation • Accessibility What you can do with the scanner The following ta ble summarizes the scanne r features.

Tools butto n Use the Tools button to open the HP Scanner Tools Utility where you can assign profiles to quick start buttons, choose whic h profiles are selectable from the scanner front panel, and view informa tion about scanner settings, status, and maintenance.
The Main Window is d isplayed when you open t he HP Smart Document Scan software. Use this window to comp lete the following tasks: • Start a scan: Load t he original in the document feeder, select a profile, and then click Scan . The scan will be comple ted using the setti ngs associated with the sel ected profile.
Use the Maintenance tab to view the scanner usage and maintenance history and to run a test scan pass. Where to get additional information Several sources of informa tion describe using the scanner and the scanning soft ware.

Load originals • Place an original on the scanner glass • Load paper into th e document feeder Place an original on the scanner glass Place items that do not meet the specificat ions for the automatic do cument feeder (ADF) directly onto the scanner glass.
NOTE: For information on how to enable lo ng-page support, see Long pages . To load paper int o the document fee d er, follow t hese steps: 1. Insert a multiple pa ge document with the printed first page of the document faci ng up and with the t op of the document into the feeder.
Scan from other software programs You can scan an image or docume nt directly into a sof tware program if the program is ISIS or TWAIN compliant . Generally, the program is compliant if it has a menu option such as Acquire , Scan , Import New Object , or Inser t .
3 Set up scan profiles An HP Smart Document Scan Software p rofile contains setting s for scanning, processing, and saving or sending scanned documents. You can set up profiles for use wi th the Scan Document To button on the scanner front panel. The profiles provide a fast, eff icient way to scan.
3. In the Profile name box, type the name you want or accept the default name. NOTE: The first 16 characte rs of the profile name can be displayed on the scanner front p anel. It is a good idea to include the informati on that dist inguishes this profile at th e beginning of the profile name.
To choose the profiles th at are displayed on the scanner front panel, follow these steps: 1. To open the HP Scanner Too ls Utility, do one of the following: • Double-click the HP Scanner Tools Utility icon on th e computer desktop. • Press the Tools ( ) button on the scanner fro nt panel.

3. Clean the glass by u sing a soft, lint-free cloth that has been sprayed with a mild glass cleaner. CAUTION: Use only glass cleane r to clean the scanner glass. Avoid cleaners that contai n abrasives, aceto ne, benzene, and carbon tet rachloride, all of which can damage the scanner glass.
5. Click the Clean button to fe ed the cloth through th e scanner. CAUTION: Wait two minutes for the components to dry before proceedi ng to the next step. 6. Place up to five pages of printed paper in the AD F. Scan and view the results. 7. If streaks still appe ar, repeat steps 3 through 6.
4. Locate the clear scan windo w inside the ADF and clean it with an HP paper-path cleaning cloth. 5. Locate the white strip on the inside of the access door and clean it. 6. Replace the ADF a ccess door: a . Position the door over the ADF opening. b .
To clean the feed roller, follow t hese steps: 1. Press the Power switch to the off position, and th en disconnect the USB cable and power cable from th e scanner. 2. Open the ADF hatch. 3. Lift the green le ver to raise the feed roller to the vertical po sition.
4. Inspect the separa tion pad that i s located below t he feed roller for wear and da mage. 1 New separation pad 2 Worn separation pad 3 Damaged separation pad NOTE: The feed ro ller replac ement kit in cludes extra se paration pa ds.
8. Close the ADF hatch, a nd then reco nnect th e USB cable an d power ca ble to the scanner. 9. Press the Power switch to the on position, an d then update th e scanner maintenance history: a . Press the Tools ( ) button on the scanner front panel to open on the HP Scanner Tools Utility.
3. Raise the scan ner lid to the ope n position. CAUTION: Do not attempt to u ninstall the ADF in the closed position. The ADF must be uninstal led in the opened position.

Scanner Error Message Reco very Pro cess Clean Out Open Replace the ADF access door by pos itioning the door ove r the ADF opening and pressing the door into place until both sides click. Duplex Error Follow these steps to resolve the e rror: 1. Close the program you are using to scan.
Scanner Error Message Recovery Process 04 Follow these steps to resolve the error: 1. Check the USB connection between the scanner and the computer. For more help, see Che ck the cables . 2. Verify that the scanner is correctly enumerated on the host.
Scanner has stopped working co rrectly If the scanner stops scanning , follow these steps. After each step, start a scan to see if the scanner is working . If the problem persists, proceed with the next step. 1. A cable might be loose. Ensure that both the USB cable and powe r supply are properly connected.
Scanner l amp stay s on The scanner lamp should t ime out and turn off automat ically after a period of inactivity (about 15 minute s). This is the Power Save mode. If the scan ner lamp remai ns on after a lo ng period of inactivity, turn o ff the scanner, wait 30 seconds, and then turn the sc anner back on.
Scanned images are not straigh t The item mig ht have shifted when you closed the lid. Straighten the origin al on the scanner glas s, and then sc an again. Verify that the docu ment feeder guides are cen tered on the scanner and set to an appropriate widt h for the original b eing scanned.
Scanner buttons are not working correctly • Buttons do not wo rk • An unexpected program opens w hen a button is p ressed • Wrong profile is used when a quick start but ton is pressed Buttons do not wo rk After each step, press a button to see if it is working correctly.
Automatic document f eeder (ADF) problems Use this sectio n to help resolve issu es that might occu r when scanning from the ADF. • Paper jamming, skewing, misfeeds, or multip le-page feeds • Pape.
The scanne d image s have st reaks or scratch es After each step, try anothe r scan to see if the streaks or scratches are st ill apparent. If so, then try the n ext step. For info rmation on clea ning the scan ner, see the Care and maintenance section.
3. Lift the green l ever to raise the feed roll er to the vertical posit i on, and then gently remove the jammed page. 4. Lower the green l ever to return the feed roller to the workin g position, and t hen close the ADF hatch. Pre ss down firmly on both sides until you hear a click.
Clear a jam at the end of the pape r path 1. Remove any lo ose pages fro m the ADF inpu t tray. 2. Gently pull the jammed page out of t he ADF in th e opposite dire ction from which the page fed into the ADF.
Remove a paper ja m within the ADF 1. Remove any loose pages from the ADF input tray. 2. Open the scanner lid. 3. Locate the ADF access door on the underside of the ADF. 4. Press the tabs on the d oor, and then pull th e door toward you until it detaches f rom the ADF.
6 Advanced technical features Experienced document management pr ofessionals might be interested in the following scan features. These features are available from any d ocument TWAIN or ISIS application that allows you to modify the scan setti ngs in its user in terface.
To disable the Misfeed (Multipick) Detection feature in an HP Smart Document Scan Software profile, follow these steps: 1. Open the HP Smart Document Scan Software. 2. Select a scan profile, and then click Edit . 3. On the Scan tab of the Profile Settings dialog box, click Advanced Settings .
