2 HP Photosmart overview Use the HP Photosmart to quickly and easil y accomplish tasks such as printing photos from a memory card. You can acce ss many HP Photosma rt functions direct ly from the control panel , without turni ng on your comp uter.

To install and print us ing the Microsoft stac k 1. Make sure that you h ave installed the HP Photosm art software on the computer. NOTE: The purpose of installing t he software is to make sure th e printer drive r is available f or the Blue tooth ® connection.
The computer dire ctly connected to the HP Pho tosmart acts as the ho st for the printer and has full soft ware functionality. The other computer, which is referred to as a cl ient , has access only to the print fe atures. You must perform other functions from the host computer or from th e control panel on the H P Photosmart.

6 Load paper You can load many dif ferent types and size s of paper in the HP Photosmart, including letter or A4 pap er, photo paper, t ransparencies, enve lopes, and HP CD /DVD tattoo l abels.

Make the HP Photosmart the default printer You can set the H P Photosmart as th e default printer to use from al l software a pplications. This means that the HP Photosmart is automatically sele cted in the printer li st when you select Print from the File menu in a soft ware application .

A dialog box disp lays instructions on th e screen when it is t i me to process the secon d side of y our job. Do not click Contin ue in the dialog bo x until you have reloaded the paper as in structed in the followin g steps.
Print mul tiple pages on a single sh eet You can print up to 16 pages on a sin g le sheet of paper. To print mult iple pages on a si ngle sheet 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loa ded in the in put tray. 2. On the File menu i n your software applicat ion, click Print .

Print a poster You can create a poster by pri nting a document on mu ltiple pages. The HP Photosmart prints dotte d lines on some pages to indic ate where to trim the pages before taping them together. To print a poster 1. Make sure you have paper loaded in th e input tra y.

8 Use the photo features The HP Photosmart is equipped w ith memory card slots and a front USB port t hat enable you to print or edit ph otos from a memory card or storage device (such as a keychain drive, portable ha rd drive, or a digit al camera in stora ge mode) with out uploading your photos to a compute r first.

Before transferring ph otos to your comput er, you need to remove the m emory card from your digital camera and insert it in the appropriat e memory card slot on the HP Photosmart, or conn ect a storage device t o the front USB po rt. To save photo s 1.
Edit photos using the control panel The HP Phot osmart offers several basic edit ing features th at you can use to edi t your photos manual ly before you prin t them, as well as a f eature that enables you to automatically e nhance your photo s.

NOTE: The changes you make to the phot o apply only t o viewing and p rinting the photo. The changes will not be saved on t he memory card or storage device. To print a fr ame around y our photo 1. Print forms The HP Photosma rt contains built-in templates that enab le you to print common forms, such as narrow or wi de ruled noteboo k paper, graph paper, task checklists, and music sheets on plain le tter- or A4-size pape r. To print forms from the contro l panel 1.
10 Maintain the HP Photosmart The HP Photosm art requires little maintenance. You might need to replace, align, or clean your ink cartridges fro m time to t ime ensure that your p rintouts are al ways of the highest quality. Thi s section provides in structions for keeping the HP Ph otosmart in t op working condition.
To check the ink l evels from the HP Photosmar t Software 1. In the H P Solution Center , click Settings , poi nt to Print Settings , and th en click Printer Tool box . NOTE: You can also open t he Printer Toolbox from the Print P roperties d ialog box.
To replace the ink cartridges 1. Make sure the HP Photosmart is turned on. 2. Open the ink cartri dge door by liftin g from the front center of th e device, until the door locks into place. 3. Squeeze the botto m of the latch below the ink ca rtridge you want to replace, and then lift the latch.
4. Pull the ink cartridge tow ard you out of its slot to remove it. 5. Remove the new ink cartridge f rom its packaging, and th en, holding it by the handl e, push the ink cartridg e into the empty slot. Match the color an d pattern of th e ink cartridge to the color and pat tern on the print carriage.

To clean th e exterior of the HP Photosmart 1. Turn off t he HP Phot osmart. 2. Use a soft clot h or slightly mois tened sponge to w ipe dust, smu dges, and stains o ff the case. The inte rior of the HP Photosmart does not require cleaning. Keep fluids away from the co ntrol panel and the interior of the HP Photosmart.

sure the other e nd of the USB cabl e is plugged into a USB port on your com puter. After the cab le is connected properly, t urn the HP Photosmart o ff and then on again. • If you are connecti ng the HP Photosmart t hrough a USB hub, make sure the hub is turned o n.
• Clean the print head when you notice a signi ficant decrease in print q uality. • Do not clean the print head unnecessarily. T his wastes ink and shortens the lif e of the cartridges. • Handle ink cartridg es carefully. Dropping , jarring, or rough handl ing during inst allation can cause temp orary printing prob lems.
3. Gently pull the paper out of the rollers. CAUTION: If the paper tears wh en you are removi ng it from the ro llers, check the rollers and wheels for to rn pieces of paper tha t might be remaining insi de t he device. If you do not remove all the pi eces of paper from t he HP Phot osmart, more paper jams are l ikely to occur.
4. Gently pul l the paper ou t of the rollers. CAUTION: If the paper tears when you are removi ng it from the rol lers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might be remaining inside the device. If you do not rem ove all the pieces of pape r from the HP Photo smart, more paper jams are li kely to occur.
4. Turn off the HP Photo smart, wait on e minute, then re start it. 5. Reinstall the H P Photosmart software. CAUTION: Do not co nnect the USB cabl e to the computer unti l prompted by the software installation screen.
• Test the powe r outlet to make su re it is working. Pl ug in an appliance that you know works, and see if the appliance has power. If not, then there might be a problem with t he power outlet. • If you plugged the HP Photosmart i nto a switched outlet, make sure the switch is on.
For more informa tion on installing th e software and connecting the USB cable, se e the Setup Guide that came wi th the HP Photosm a rt. The display s hows the wrong l a ng uage Cause: You might have select ed the incorrect lang uage when setting up the HP Photosmart.
Solution: Clear the paper ja m, and then fo llow the prompt s on the display or the computer screen to cont inue. For more information, see: “ Clear paper jam s” on page 99 Cause: The print he ad assembly is blocked. Solution: There migh t be some packing material inside the HP Photosmart.
A red X appears o n the USB conne ct prompt Cause: Normally, a green check appe ars indicating that the USB connection is successful . A red X indicates that t he USB connection f ailed. Solution: Check that the H P Photosmart is turned on , and then try the U SB connection ag ain.

• Printouts seem blurry or fuzzy • Printouts have vertical streaks • Printouts are slant ed or skewed • Paper is not picke d up from the inp ut tray Ink is bleeding or smearing Cause: The paper type i s not suitable for the HP Photosmart. Solution: Use HP Premium Pap ers or any other paper type t hat is appropriate f or the HP Photos mart.
If the prob lem persists, use the software you insta lled with the HP Photosmart or another softw are applicat ion to rotate your image 180 degrees so tha t the light b l u e, gray, or brown hues in you r image do not pri nt at the bott om of the page.
Solution: Load high-q uality paper in the input tray an d print the image with a high print quality sett ing, such as Best , Maximum dpi , or High Resolution . Always make sure the paper you are printing on is flat. For best results when printing image s, use HP Premium Plus Photo Paper.

Solution: Turn the HP Photosmart of f and open the ink cartridge doo r. Remove any objects that are b locking the prin t head assembly (including any packing materials), and then turn the HP Photosmart o n again. Cause: The comput er is not communi cating with the HP Pho tosmart.
Solution: The printer drive r status might have chan ged to either offline or sto p printing . To check the p rinter driver status 1. In the HP Solutio n Center, click the de vice tab. 2. Click Settings . 3. Click Status . If the status is offline or stop printing , change the st atus to r eady .

Other users o n the network can access my mem ory card or storage device Cause: The Common Internet File System (C IFS) server in the HP Photosma rt does no t support auth entication. Th is is a limita tion of the C IFS server. The CIFS se rver is included in all net work-connecte d HP Photosmart devi ces.
Firmware r evision m ismatch Cause: The revision num ber of the HP Photosmart firmware does not m atch the revision number o f the soft ware. Solution: To find support and warranty i nformation, go to the HP Web site at www.
Cause: You might be using the prin ter in an extremely hi gh- or low-humidity environment. Solution: Load one shee t of photo paper at a time. Photo tray canno t engage Cause: The photo tray might not be pushed all th e way in. Solution: Lif t the out put tray, t hen push the p hoto tray all the way in.
Photos n ot found Cause: Some of the files on th e inserted memory card or a ttached storage device are damaged. Solution: Reinsert the memory card i n the HP Photos mart or try transferring the files to you r computer using a memory card reader or a USB cable.
Invalid file name Cause: The file name you ent ered is inval id. Solution: Make su re that you are n ot using any i nvalid symbol s in the file name. NOTE: Although th e file name mi ght look correct, i t could st ill include invalid characters. O verwrite the existi ng file name with a n ew name.
Memory card erro r Cause: There are tw o or more memory cards inserted into the HP Phot osmart at the same time. Solution: Remove a ll but one memo ry card. The HP Ph otosmart reads the remaining memory card a nd displays the first phot o stored on the memo ry card.
Cause: You have inserted a Compact Flash mem ory card backwards or upside down. Solution: Remove the memory card and reinse rt it correctly. Th e label of the Compact Fl ash card faces up and should be readabl e as you insert it into the slot. Cause: You have not fully inserted t he memory card.
