8 Introduction —Continued Supported Discs The D VD receiver supports the follo wing discs. • The D VD receiver does not support disc types not listed. • The D VD receiver supports 8 cm and 12 cm discs. • Don’ t use discs with an unusual shape, such as those shown below , because you may damage the D VD recei ver.
9 Intr oduction —Continued MP3/WMA/JPEG Compatibility • The D VD receiv er can play/display MP3, WMA, and JPEG files recorded on CD-R, CD-R W , DVD-R, D VD-R W , D VD+R and DVD+R W discs. • Discs must be in ISO 9660 Lev el 2 or Joliet format (folders can be up to eight lev e ls deep).
10 Introduction —Continued Copyright It is forbidden by law to cop y , broadcast, show , broad- cast on cable, play in public, or rent copyrighted material without permission. D VD-V ideo discs are co py-protected, and any record- ings made from these discs will be distorted.
11 Bef ore Using the D VD receiver Notes: • If the remote controller doesn’ t work reliably , try replacing both batteries. • Don’t mix new and old batteries, or different types of batteries. • If you intend not to use the remote controller for a long time, remov e the batteries to pre vent possible leakage and corrosion.

14 Front & Rear P a nels —Continued SPEAKERS [18] These terminal posts are for connecting your front speakers. HDMI IN/OUT [26] HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) con- nections carry digital audio and digital video. The HDMI input is for connecting components with HDMI outputs.

19 Connecting the D VD receiver —Continued Connecting the AM Loop Antenna The supplied indoor AM loop an tenna is for indoor use only . If you cannot achie ve good reception with the supplied indoor AM loop antenna, try using it with a commer- cially av ailable outdoor AM antenna (see page 20).
20 Connecting the D VD receiver —Continued Connecting an Outdoo r AM Antenna If good reception cannot be achie ved using the supplied AM loop antenna, an outdoor AM antenna can be used in addition to the lo op antenna, as sho wn.
21 Connecting the D VD receiver —Continued A V Cables & Connector s Video Cable Jack Description HDMI HDMI connections can carry uncompressed, stan- dard or high def inition digital video and digital audio, for the best picture and sound quality .
22 Connecting the D VD receiver —Continued The following matrix sho w s how the video outputs work in relation to the v arious video settings. ✓ : Output * 1 No picture will be output from other than HDM I when you connect the TV that the native resolution is “ 720p” or “1080i”.

24 Connecting the D VD receiver —Continued • Connect the D VD receiv er directly to your TV . If you connect the D VD receiv er through a VCR, TV/VCR combination, or video selector , the picture may be dis- torted because D VD-V ideo discs are usually copy pro- tected.

27 Connecting the D VD receiver —Continued T o control the D VD receiv er with the remote controller when D VD receiver is located in a cabinet, you’ll need a commercially a vailable mul tiroom remote control kit. • Multiroom kits are made by Niles and Xantech.
28 Connecting the P ower/T urning on the D VD receiver Befor e connecting • Make sure that all the connections on pages 17–27 are complete (the connection to a TV is required). Note: D VD recei ver features a scree n sa ver and an auto po wer off fun ction.
29 Initial Setup This chapter expl ains the settings you need to make the very first time the D VD receiver is turned on. Basically this manual contains procedures using the remote controller . The very first time you turn on the D VD recei ver, the “Initial Setup” men u appears onscreen.
30 HDMI and Pr ogressive Settings Note: Stop playback before perform these settings. This section explains ho w to turn on the HDMI OUT and change the video resolution when your TV or projector is connected to the HDMI OUT.
31 Under standing Common Operations Use the Master V olume control, or the remote c ontrol- ler’ s V OL [ ]/[ ] b utton. The volume can be set to “Min”, “1” through “79”, “Max”. Depending on subwoofer le vel or listening mode, the maximum v olume v aries.
32 Understanding Common Operations —Continued Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the D V D receiv er. W ith the sleep timer, you can set the D VD receiv er to turn of f automati cally after a specif ied period. If you need to cancel the sleep timer, press the [Sleep] button repeatedly un til the SLEEP indicator disappears.
33 Pla ying Discs This chapter cov ers basic playback. Advanced playback functions are cov ered in the “ Adv anced Playback” on page 43. Note: Only load discs that are supported by the D VD recei ver. See pages 8 to 9. This section explains ho w to start, pause, and stop play- back.
34 Playing Discs —Contin ued Notes: • Prolonged display of the same picture or menu may cause irreparable damage to your TV screen known as scr een burn-in . T o pre vent this, don ’t k eep playback paused for too long and always press the Stop [ ] but- ton when you’ ve fi nished playing a D VD disc or VCD.
35 Playing Discs —Contin ued This section explains ho w to fast forward and rev erse. Notes: • Fast forward and fast re verse may not always work at the speed shown onscreen. • For discs other than audio CDs, no sound is output during fast forward or f ast re verse.
36 Playing Discs —Contin ued D VD-V ideo discs usually have a menu from which you can select titles, ch apters, and other options, including soundtracks, subtitles, and audio formats (e.g., Dolb y Digital or DTS). VCDs that support PBC (Playback Control) may also hav e an onscreen menu.

54 Configuring the D VD receiver Here you can conf igure the D VD receiv er in this menu on display . The configurations are common for the all input settings e xcluding “ A VSync”, “V ideo1 Input” and “V ideo2 Input”. For detailed information, ref er to the pages in brackets.
55 Configuring the D VD receiver —Continued Speaker s Output Balance Here you can adjust the out put balance of speakers. The balance can be adj usted from “L + 12” to “R + 12” in 1 steps. Note: When the listening mode is set to “Direct”, no effect will be produced.

57 D VD Onscreen Setup Menus This chapter explains the v arious functions and settings of the onscreen setup menus. Functions and settings are arranged into six menus: Picture , Au d i o , Language , Display , Operation Setting , and Initial Setup .
58 D VD Onscreen Setup Menus —Continued This section explains ho w to navigate th e onscreen setup menus. Using the Onscreen Setup Men us 1 Press the Input [ ]/[ ] buttons to select “D VD”, and then press the [Setup] button. The onscreen setup menu appears, as shown.
59 D VD Onscreen Setup Menus —Continued TV Shape W ith this setting you can selec t a picture format to match the aspect ratio of your TV . 4:3 Letter box (default): Choose this option if you have a standard TV (4:3 aspect ratio).
60 D VD Onscreen Setup Menus —Continued Progre ssive Setting W ith this setting you can set the component video output to progressi ve or interlaced. While the “HDMI Output Setting” is set t o “On”, this setting is f ixed at “Progres- siv e” and cannot be changed.
61 D VD Onscreen Setup Menus —Continued Digital/HDMI A udio Out W ith this setting you can configure the HDMI digital output. All (default): Dolby Digital and DTS signals are output as they are. If your TV or amp doesn’ t support higher sampling rates, set the “Linear PCM Out” setting to “Down Sample On” (below).
62 D VD Onscreen Setup Menus —Continued ■ Selecting Other La nguages This section explains ho w to select other languages for disc menus, audio, and subtitles.
63 D VD Onscreen Setup Menus —Continued On-Screen Display W ith this setting you can turn on or off onscreen mes- sages, such as “Play”, “Stop”, and “Resume”. Off: Onscreen messages are not displayed. On (default): Onscreen messages are displayed.
64 D VD Onscreen Setup Menus —Continued Setting the Parental Loc k W ith the Parental Lock function you can block access to certain scenes that the authors hav e flagged as being unsuitable for children. Notes: • When entering a security code, you can use the [CLR] bu tton to delete the numbers en tered so far , if neces- sary .
65 D VD Onscreen Setup Menus —Continued D VD Priority Contents This setting determin es what is played when a D VD- Audio disc also contains D VD-V ideo material. D VD- A UDI O (default): The D VD- Audio material is played. DV D -V I D E O : The D VD-V ideo material is played.
66 Additional inf ormation Use this procedure to reset all the recei ver’ s settings to the factory default. Note that resetting the D VD receiv er will delete your radio presets and custom settings. All D VD-V ideo discs carry a region mark on the case some where that indicates which region(s) of the world the disc is compatible with.
67 Additional inf ormation —Continued ■ MP3, WMA & JPEG Files MP3, WMA and JPEG files are typically organized into folders. The D VD receiver handles MP3, WMA and JPEG files as tracks. Glossary Analog audio An electrical signal that directly represents sound.
68 Glossary —Continued Dynamic range The difference between the quietest and loudest sounds possible in an audio signal (without distorting or getting lost in noi se). Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks are capable of a v ery wide dynamic range, deli vering dramatic ci nema-like effects.
69 T r oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using the D VD receiv er, look for a solution in this section. If you can’t resolve the issue yourself, contact the dealer from whom you purchased this unit. The power to the system is not turned on • Make sure that the power cord is plugged into the A C outlet.
70 T roubleshooting —Continued The subwoofer produces no sound • When you play source material that contains no infor- mation in the LFE channel, the subwoofer produces no sound. • Make sure the subwoofer is configu red correctly (page 54). 71 T roubleshooting —Contin ued Reception is noisy , FM stereo reception is no isy , or the FM ST indicator doesn’t appear • Relocate your antenna. • Move the D VD receiver a way from your TV or com- puter . • When listening to an AM station, operating the remote controller may cause noise.
72 T roubleshooting —Continued No sound, or sound is distorted • No sound is output when sc anning discs other than audio CDs and SA CDs. • Check that the disc is free from dust and dirt, and that it is not damaged (page 9). • Check that the plugs and terminals are free of dirt, oxide, etc.
