– 6 – Getting Started Unpacking After unpacking, check to be sure that you hav e all the follo wing items. – 8 – Connecting Other Equipment Y ou can connect the following equipment to this unit: • Cassette deck — used as a playback and recording device. By using the cassette deck, y ou can record an y source played back on this unit. • Audio equipment with an optical digital output terminal — used only as a dig ital pla yback device.

– 15 – Adjusting the Volume Y ou can adjust the volume level onl y w hile the unit is turned on. Turn V OLUME clockwise to increase the v olume or counterclockwise to decrease it. When using the remote control, press V OLUME + to increase the volume or press VOLUME – to decrease it.

– 18 – T uning in a Station On the unit: 1 Pr ess FM/AM. The unit automatically turns on and tunes in the pre viously tuned station (either FM or AM–MW/L W). • Each time you press the button, the band alternates between FM and AM. 2 T une into a station.
– 19 – T o pr eset sta tions man ually — Manual Pr esetting 1 T une in the station y ou w ant to pr eset. • See “T uning in a Station” on page 18. 2 Press SET . The current preset number starts flashing. 3 Select a preset number . On the unit: Push the joy control rightward ( ¢ ) or leftward ( 4 ).
– 20 – Mor e a bout RDS • Not all FM stations provide RDS signals, nor do all RDS stations provide the same ser vices. If in doubt, check with local radio stations for details on RDS in your area. • RDS ma y not wor k corr ectly if the recei ved station is not transmitting the signals properly or if the signal strength is weak.
– 21 – Switching to a Program T ype of Y our Choice T emporarily The EON function allows the unit to switch temporarily to a br oadcast pr ogram of your c hoice (T A, NEWS, and/or INFO) fr om a dif ferent station except w hen y ou ar e listening to a non-RDS stations — some FM stations and AM (MW/L W) stations.

– 26 – T o stop playback for a moment Press CD # / 8 . T o resume play , press CD # / 8 a gain. T o locate a particular point in a track during play On the unit: Push the joy control upw ard ( ¡ ) or do wnward ( 1 ). • Upward ( ¡ ): F ast-forwards the tracks.
– 27 – T o check the pr ogram contents Before playing, you can check the program contents by pressing ¢ or 4 on the remote control. • ¢ : Shows the programed tracks in the programed order . • 4 : Shows them in the re verse order . T o modify the pr ogram Before playing, you can erase the last programed track by pressing CANCEL.

– 33 – Before Y ou Start Recording • It should be noted that it may be unla wful to re-record pre-recorded tapes, records, or discs without the consent of the owner of cop yright in the sound or video recording, broadcast or cable programme and in an y literar y , dramatic, m usical, or artistic embodied therein.
– 34 – Recording Any Sound Source — Standard Recording The following r ecording method can be applied to any sound source. 1 Insert a recordable MD in the MD loading slot. 2 Select the source. • When recording a CD: Press CD 1, CD 2, or CD 3 to select a disc you want to record from, then 7 .
– 35 – T o record a single tr ack dur ing pla y or pause Press CD 3 MD while playing back or pausing a CD track you want to record. The playback of that CD track is stopped, and the same track star ts pla ying fr om the be ginning again. This time, the MD recorder starts recording the CD track.
– 36 – Recording FM/AM (MW/L W) Broadcasts — Monaural Recording and Stereo Recording When recording FM/AM (MW/L W) br oadcasts, y ou can select one of the two recording methods — Monaur al (Long) Recording and Stereo (Normal) Recording. • Monaural (Long) Recording — Records both stereo program and monaural program in monaural.

The MD recorder repeats the selected point — a 3- second per iod f ollowing the di viding point. • If the di viding point is sa tisf actory , g o to step 7. • If the di viding point is not satisfactory , go to the next step.

– 45 – Assigning Titles to an MD Y ou can assign a name to each MD and to each track. Once a title is assigned, it is displayed for your confirmation. Each title can be composed of up to 64 characters, and can be input using alphabetic characters (uppercase and lowercase), symbols and n umerals.
– 46 – 6 Input a character . • Ex. When entering “H” 1) Push the joy contr ol hor izontally ( 4 / ¢ ) and v ertically ( 1 / ¡ ) to until “H” is selected. 2) Press SET . The selected character is entered, and the character entry position moves to the next.

– 55 – Maintenance T o get the best performance of the unit, keep y our discs and mec hanism c lean. General Notes In g eneral, you will have the best perf ormance b y keeping your CDs, MDs and the mechanism clean. • Store CDs and MDs in their cases, and keep them in cabinets or on shelves.
– 56 – MD Disc T ypes There are two types of MDs: Pr emastered (pr erecorded) and Recordable (b lank). Pr emastered MDs Premastered MDs, which ha ve been recorded at music studio, can be pla yed bac k like regular CDs. On an MD of this type , data is recorded as the presence or absence of tiny pits.
– 57 – Sound Skip Guard Memory The big gest w eakness of discs is their susceptibility to vibra tion. The “Sound Skip Guard Memor y” has been developed to cope with this weakness. W ith this function, a fe w seconds of signals read by the optical read head from the MD are first stor ed in memory before being r eproduced as audio signals.
