1 UNP ACKING AND CHECKING EQUIPMENT Carefully unpack the tr ansceiver . We recommend y ou identify the items listed in the f ollowing table bef ore discarding the packing material. If any items are missing or ha ve been damaged during shipment, file a claim with the carr ier immediately .
2 ORIENT A TION Antenna Power switch/ Volume control T ur n clockwise to s witch the power ON and counter- clockwise to s witch the power OFF . Rotate to adjust the volume . MENU key Press and hold while s witching the power ON to enter Menu Mode. Press to select settings while in Menu Mode.

4 PREP ARA TION I NST ALLING / R EMOVING THE B A TTERY P ACK The batter y pack is not charged at the f actor y; charge it bef ore use (pages 6 and 7). A verage battery pack lif e: 10 hours • A verage times are calculated using 5% transmit time , 5% receiv e time, and 90% standby time.
5 I NST ALLING / R EMOVING B A TTERIES In place of the battery pack, you can use 3 AA batterie. Use high quality alkaline batteries to enjoy longer periods of battery life. 1 Match the f our groov es of the battery pack with the corresponding guides on the back of the tr ansceiver .
6 C HARGING THE B A TTERY P ACK Initially charging the batter y pack after purchase or extended storage (greater than 2 months) will not bring the battery pack to its normal operating capacity . After repeating the charge/ discharge cycle two or three times, the oper ating capacity will increase to normal.
7 1 Plug the A C adapter cable into the adapter jack located on the rear of the charger . 2 Plug the A C adapter into an A C outlet. 3 Slide a battery pack using the supplied holder or a transceiv er equipped with a battery pack into the batter y pack slot.

9 GETTING ST ARTED q q q q q Switch the P ower ON. Switch the transceiv er power ON by turning the P ower s witch/ V olume control clockwise . • A confir mation tone sounds. T o switch the transceiv er power OFF , turn the P ower s witch/ V olume control fully countercloc kwise, until a click sounds.
10 Y ou can change the frequency of each channel: 1 T urn the transceiv er power OFF . 2 Press and hold the MENU ke y while tur ning the transceiv er ON (for 1 second). 3 Press the ▲ or ▼ k ey to select the frequency setting menu. • The channel number appears with “F” and the current frequency number .
11 QUIET TALK/ DIGIT AL QUIET TALK QT (Quiet T alk) and DQT (Digital Quiet T alk) are functions that reject signals from undesired par ties that are using the same channel as y ou. Y ou will hear audio from the speaker only when y ou receive a signal that contains a tone or code matching the one set up on the channel you are using.
12 SCANNING THE CHANNELS Y ou can scan both channels of the transceiv er to search for a signal. When the transceiver v er ifies a signal on a channel, it proceeds to check whether or not its QT/ DQT setting matches that which is set up on your tr ansceiv er .
13 Y ou can turn the scan function (the ability to perform scan) ON or OFF in Menu Mode: 1 T ur n the transceiver po wer OFF . 2 Press and hold the MENU k ey while turning the transceiv er power ON (f or 1 second). 3 Press the ▲ or ▼ k ey to select “SC”.
14 MONITORING A CHANNEL When no signals are present, the squelch on the transceiv er automatically mutes the speak er so you will not hear background noise . T o manually deactivate the squelch, press and hold the MON key . • When deactiv ated, the monitor icon appears on the display and the LED lights green.
15 VOICE ACTIV A TED CONTROL (VOX) Using the V O X f eature, you can oper ate the transceiver hands-free. In order to use this feature, ho wev er , you must use an optional headset; VO X will not function with the built-in mircrophone.
16 T o enjo y the VO X function, take the time to properly adjust the V O X Gain. This le vel controls the VO X circuit to detect the presence or absence of your v oice. 1 T urn the transceiv er power OFF . 2 Press and hold the MENU ke y while tur ning the transceiv er power ON (for 1 second).
17 While using V O X, you can set the tr ansceiver to detect when the channel is busy . With this function turned on, VO X will not allow y ou to transmit while the channel is being used. Y ou can transmit only when the channel is free . 1 T ur n the transceiver po wer OFF .
18 VOICE SCRAMBLER Whereas the Quiet T alk and Digital Quiet T alk functions give y ou privacy in so much that you are ab le to ignore unwanted calls, the v oice scrambler giv es you complete privacy .
19 OPERA TING FEA TURES T RANSMISSION P OWER Y ou can adjust the transmission po wer on all channels. Selecting low po wer will allow longer use of the batter y pack. Selecting high pow er will allow y ou to transmit farther , in case the other par ty is too far a wa y for low pow er usage.
20 D ISPLA Y I LLUMINA TION Y ou can set the displa y illumination to remain off, remain on, or turn on when you press any k ey other than the PTT switch (auto). When set to auto, the lamp remains on f or 5 seconds after pressing a k e y before turning off again.
21 T IME - OUT T IMER The pur pose of the Time-out Timer is to prev ent any single person from using a channel f or an e xtended per iod of time. If you contin uously transmit f or 3 minutes (default v alue), the transceiv er will stop transmitting and a tone will sound.
22 B A TTERY P OWER S A VER This transceiv er has been designed to give you the most out of y our batter y power . While using the transceiver , the battery sav er will automatically switch ON after 10 seconds ha ve elapsed with no operations or receiv ed calls.
23 B A TTERY I NDICA TOR When turned ON, the batter y indicator on the display lets y ou know appro ximately how much battery life is remaining. When turned OFF , the batter y indicator will appear and blink only when the batter y voltage le vel is low .
24 C ALL T ONES Call tones are used to aler t you as to when a par ty member is beginning a call. Y ou can set up a call tone to one of 6 types in order to easily identify yourself to y our par ty members. If each par ty member uses a different call tone, it is easy to know who is making the call.
25 C ALL A LERT It is also possible to set up y our transceiver so that y ou are aler ted using vibration. When vibration alert is activated, the vibration icon appears on the displa y . T o select your received alert tone method: 1 T ur n the transceiver po wer OFF .
26 B USY C HANNEL L OCKOUT This function is used in order to pre v ent transmitting on a channel that somebody else is currently using. When tur ned ON, a beep sounds when you press the PTT s witch while another par ty is using the channel, and you cannot transmit.
