Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and ensure that the power button is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.

The Access Connections progr am is a connectivity assistant progr am for cr eating and managing location proles. Each location pr ole stor es all the network and Internet conguration settings needed for connecting to a network infr astructure fr om a specic location such as a home or an ofce.

P ower management When you need to use your computer away fr om electrical outlets, you depend on battery power to keep your computer running.
The ac power adapter that comes with your computer has two basic components: • The transformer pack that converts ac power for use with the computer . • The power cord that plugs into the ac outlet and into the transformer pack. Attention: Using an impr oper power cord could cause severe damage t o your computer .
Managing the battery power T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, adjust your power plan settings. T o access power plan settings, do the following: • F or Windows 7: Start the P ower Manager pr ogram and then click the P ower Plan tab.
By using this mode, you can turn off your comput er complet ely without saving les or e xiting fr om any progr ams that are running. When the computer ent ers hibernation, all open pr ograms, folders, and les are saved to the har d disk, and then the comput er turns off.
2. Click the Global P ower Settings tab. 3. F or Low batt er y alarm or Critically low battery alarm , set the per centage of the power level and set the action.
• If you use the wireless feature (the 802.11 standar d) of your comput er simultaneously with a Bluetooth option, the data tr ansmission speed can be delayed and the performance of the wir eless featur e can be degraded. Changing display settings Y ou can change the display settings, such as the display r esolution, font siz e, and so on. T o change the display settings, do the following: 1. Open Contr ol P anel and click Appearance and P ersonalization . 2. Click Display for further congur ation.
Note: T o change the color settings, right-click on the deskt op, and click Screen resolution . Click Advanced Settings , select the Monitor tab, then set Colors . Setting up a pr esentation T o make presentations, you can attach a pr ojector to your comput er thr ough the HDMI port on your comput er .
Conguring for sound r ecording T o congure the micr ophone for optimized sound r ecording, open the Realt ek HD Audio Manager window by doing the following: Open Control P anel. Then click Hardwar e and Sound ➙ Realtek HD Audio Manager . The Realt ek HD Audio Manager window opens.
Inserting a media card Attention: Before you start installing any of the following car ds, t ouch a metal table or a grounded metal object. This action reduces any static electricity from your body . Disk Encryption hard disk drive and Encryption solid-stat e drive Some models contain the Disk Encryption hard disk drive or Encryption solid-state drive. This feature helps to pr otect your comput er against security attacks on media, NAND ash or device contr ollers by use of a har dware encryption chip.
Using the ngerprint reader Y our computer has an integr ated ngerprint reader . Fingerprint authentication can r eplace passwor ds and enable simple and secure user access.

4. Do one of the following: • T o rescue les from your hard disk drive or fr om a backup, click Rescue les and follow the instructions on the scr een.

Replacing the base cover assembly Before you start, print these instructions. T o r eplace the base cover assembly, do the following: 1. Disable the built-in batt er y . See “Disabling the built-in battery” on page 63. 2. Close the computer display, and turn the computer over .
Replacing the hard disk drive or solid-state drive Before you start, print these instructions. Attention: The har d disk drive is very sensitive. Incorrect handling can cause damage and permanent loss of data. Observe the following guidelines: • Replace the har d disk drive or solid-stat e drive only if you upgrade it or have it r epaired.
5. Lift the tab to r emove the har d disk drive or solid-state drive out of the comput er . 6. Insert the hard disk drive or solid-state drive into the slot 1 and position the har d disk drive or solid-state drive rmly into place 2 . 7. Install the screws t o secur e the hard disk drive or solid-stat e drive.
Replacing a memory module Before you start, print these instructions. Increasing memory capacity is an effective way to mak e pr ograms run fast er . T o r eplace or add a memory module, r ead the following prer equisites, and then the instructions. When replacing a memory module, be sure to follow the precautions.
6. With the notched end of the memory module t oward the contact edge side of the sock et, insert the memory module 1 into the socket at an angle of about 20 degrees; then press it in rmly 2 . 7. Reinstall the base cover assembly . See “Replacing the base cover assembly” on page 64.
4. If a t ool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use the t ool t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such t ool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connectors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. Connect the antenna cables to the new card as shown in the drawing. 8. Reinstall the base cover assembly . See “Replacing the base cover assembly” on page 64. 9. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the backup battery Before you start, print these instructions.

Chapter 7. Advanced congur ation While it is important t o pr otect les, data, and settings that ar e on the har d disk drive or solid-stat e drive, you also might need to install a new oper ating system, install new device drivers, update your system UEFI BIOS, or r ecover pr einstalled softwar e.
– After the oper ating system installation, you should not change the initial UEFI/L egacy Boot setting in ThinkPad Setup. The UEFI/L egacy Boot setting must be the same as it was when the Windows operating system image was installed. Otherwise, the operating system will not boot properly .
The name of each subfolder is the number of a x module. F or information about each x module, go t o the Micr osoft Knowledge Base homepage at http://support.microsoft.com, type the number of the x module you need in the sear ch eld, and click Search .
3. Double-click the Setup.e xe le in the C:DRIVERSWINUSB3 .0 direct ory . 4. Click Next . If the device driver is alr eady installed, click Cancel .

• Message : 0253: EFI V ariable Block Data was destroyed. Solution : The syst em EFI V ariable Block Data might have been corrupted. • Message : 0271: Date and time error . Solution : Neither the date nor the time is set in the computer . Enter ThinkP ad Setup t o set the date and time.
Solution : ThinkV antage Active P rotection sensor is not working corr ectly . Have the computer serviced. • Message : 2100: Initialization error on HDD0 (Main HDD). Solution : The har d disk drive is not working. Have the har d disk drive serviced.
– The ac power adapt er is connected to the computer and the power cor d is plugged into a working electrical outlet. – The computer is turned on. (T urn the power butt on on again for conrmation.) If a power -on passwor d is set: – Pr ess any key to display the prompt for the power-on passwor d.
Memory module problems Print these instructions now and k eep it with your comput er for r eference lat er . If your memory module is not oper ating pr operly, check the following items: 1. V erify that the memory module is installed and seat ed corr ectly in your computer .
Solution : – Use Category 5 wiring and ensur e that the network cable is securely connect ed. – Connect t o a 1000 BASE- T hub/switch (not 1000 BASE-X). • Problem : The Wake On LAN feature is not working. Solution : – Ensure that Wake On LAN is enabled in ThinkP ad Setup.
• Problem : PIM items sent fr om the Windows 7 oper ating systems cannot be received corr ectly into the address book of any other Bluetooth-enabled device. Solution : The Windows 7 oper ating system send PIM items in XML format, but most Bluetooth-enabled devices handle PIM items in vC ard format.
Computer screen problems • Problem : The screen is blank. Solution : Do the following: – Pr ess F7 to bring up the image. – If you ar e using the ac power adapter , or using the batt er y and the batt ery gauge shows that the battery is not depleted, press F6 t o make the screen brighter .
• Problem : Missing, discolor ed, or bright dots appear on the scr een every time you turn on your computer . Solution : This is an intrinsic char acteristic of the TFT technology . Y our computer display contains multiple thin-lm tr ansistors (TFT s).

Note: F or details about contr olling volume, r efer t o your Windows online help. • Problem : A volume or balance slider cannot be moved. Solution : The slider might be gr ayed out. This means that its position is x ed by the har dware and cannot be changed.
Battery and power problems This topic contains instructions on troubleshooting batt ery and power pr oblems. Battery pr oblems • Problem : The battery pack cannot be fully charged in the standard char ge time when the comput er is powered off. Solution : The batt er y pack might be over -discharged.
If your comput er is getting no power at all, check the following items: 1. Check all power connections. Remove any power strips and surge prot ectors to connect the ac power adapter dir ectly to the ac power outlet.
If the battery is charged and the temper ature is within range, have the computer serviced. • Problem : A critical low-batt ery err or occurs, and the computer immediately turns off. Solution : The batt ery power is getting low . Connect the ac power adapter t o the comput er and plug it into an electrical outlet.
• Problem : The har d disk drive does not work. Solution : On the Boot menu of ThinkP ad Setup, ensur e that the hard disk drive is on the Boot priority order list. If it is on the Ex cluded from boot order list, it is disabled. Select the entry for it on the list and press the Shift+1 key .
