Read first When your computer is turned on or the battery is charging, the base, the palm r est, and some other parts may become hot. A void keeping your hands, your lap, or any other part of your body in contact with a hot section of the computer for any extended length of time.
Route the cables of an ac adapter , a mouse, a keyboard, a printer , or any other electronic device, or communication lines, so that they cannot be walked on, tripped over , pinched by your computer or other objects, or in any way subjected to treatment that could disturb the operation of your computer .
Place liquids away from your computer to avoid spills, and keep your computer away from water to avoid the danger of electrical shock. Read first vii.

Code Message Description 0200 Failure Fixed Disk Fixed disk is not working or not configur ed properly . Check to see if fixed disk is attached properly . Run BIOS Setup Utility . Find out if the fixed-disk type is correctly identified. 0210 Stuck key Stuck key on keyboard.
Code Message Description 0280 Previous boot incomplete - Default configuration used Previous POST did not complete successfully . POST loads default values and offers to run BIOS Setup Utility . If the failure was caused by incorrect values and they ar e not corrected, the next boot will likely fail.
Code Message Description N/A* Failing Bits: nnnn The hex number nnnn is a map of the bits at the RAM address which failed the memory test. Each 1 (one) in the map indicates a failed bit. See errors 230, 231, or 232 above for of fset address of the failure in System, Extended, or Shadow memory .
Errors without messages Problem: When I turn on the computer , nothing appears on the screen and the computer does not beep while starting up. Note: If you are not sur e whether you heard any beeps, turn of f the computer; then turn it on again, and listen again.
A password problem Problem: I forgot my passwor d. Solution: v If you forgot your user password, you must take your computer to a Lenovo authorized servicer or a marketing repr esentative to have the password canceled. v If you forgot your HDD password, Lenovo authorized servicer can not reset your passwor d or recover data fr om the hard disk.
Problem: The computer enters sleep mode (the sleep indicator turns on) immediately after Power-on self-test (POST). Solution: Make sure that: v The battery is charged. v The operating temperature is within the acceptable range. See “Specifications” on page 44.
Computer screen problems Problem: The screen is blank. Solution: Do the following: v Press Fn+F7 to bring up the image. Note: If you use the Fn+F7 key combination to apply a presentation scheme, pr ess Fn+F7 at least three times in thr ee seconds, and the image is displayed on the computer screen.
Problem: The screen is unr eadable or distorted. Solution: Make sure that: v The display device driver is installed correctly . v The screen resolution and color quality ar e correctly set. v The monitor type is correct. To check these settings, do as follows: 1.
Problem: A message, “Unable to create overlay window ,” appears when you try to start DVD playback. -or- Yo u get poor or no playback while running video playback, DVD playback, or game applications. Solution: Do either of the following: v If you are using 32-bit color mode, change the color depth to 16-bit mode.
A hard disk drive problem Problem: The hard disk drive does not work. Solution: In the Boot menu in BIOS Setup Utility , make sure that the hard disk drive is included in the Boot Sequence correctly . A startup problem Problem: The Microsoft ® W indows operating system will not start.
Problem: The computer does not start from a device you want. Solution: See the Startup menu of the BIOS Setup Utility . Make sure that the startup sequence in the BIOS Setup Utility is set so that the computer starts from the device you want. Also make sure that the device fr om which the computer starts is enabled.
Chapter 4. Recovery options Using Rescue and Recovery If W indows is not running properly , use the Rescue and Recovery workspace to help solve or identify your problem. Do the following: 1. T urn off your computer . 2. Press the Lenovo Car e button to turn on the computer and immediately enter the Rescue and Recovery workspace.
Attention: All of the files on the primary hard disk partition (usually drive C) will be lost in the recovery pr ocess. However , before any data is overwritten, you will be given the opportunity to save one or more files to other media. 1. If possible, save all your files and shut down your operating system.
Chapter 5. Upgrading and replacing devices Replacing the battery Important Read Safety and Warranty Guide befor e replacing the battery . 1. T urn of f the computer , or enter hibernation mode. Then disconnect the ac adapter and all cables from the computer .

Notes: 1. Replace the hard disk drive only if you upgrade it or have it r epaired. The connectors and bay of the hard disk drive wer e not designed for frequent changes, or drive swapping. 2. The Rescue and Recovery workspace and the Product Recovery pr ogram are not included on an optional har d disk drive.
5. Disconnect the hard disk drive and r emove it by pulling out the tab 3 . 3 6. Insert a new hard disk drive into the har d disk drive bay 1 , then firmly install it.
7. Reinstall the cover by aligning the front side of the cover first 1 , and closing the cover 2 . Then tighten the two screws 3 . 2 1 1 3 3 8. Reinstall the battery . 9. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac adapter and cables to the computer .

12. Reinstall the battery . 13. T urn the computer over again, and reconnect the ac adapter and cables to the computer . To make sure that the SO-DIMM is installed correctly , do as follows: 1. T urn the computer on. 2. While the initial screen is displayed, pr ess F1.
