Read this rst Be sur e to follow the important tips given her e to continue to get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure to do so might lead t o discomfort or injury, or cause your computer to fail. When your computer is turned on or the batt ery is charging, the base, the palm rest, and some other parts may become hot.
Protect your computer and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sure that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that require immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the pr oduct should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authoriz ed servicer .
Replaceable Units, or CRUs. L enovo provides documentation with instructions when it is appropriate for customers to install options or replace CRUs. Y ou must closely follow all instructions when installing or replacing parts. The Off state of a power indicator does not necessarily mean that voltage levels inside a product are zer o.
Extension cords and related devices Ensure that extension cor ds, surge pr otectors, uninterruptible power supplies, and power strips that you use are r ated to handle the electrical requir ements of the pr oduct. Never overload these devices. If power strips are used, the load should not e xceed the power strip input rating.
External devices CA UTION: Do not connect or disconnect any external device cables other than Universal Serial Bus (USB) and 1394 cables while the computer power is on; otherwise, you might damage your comput er .
Rechargeable battery notice DANGER Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the battery pack. A ttempting to do so can cause an explosion, or liquid leakage from the battery pack. A battery pack other than the one specied by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modied battery pack is not covered by the warranty .
Heat and product ventilation DANGER Computers, ac power adapters, and many accessories can generate heat when turned on and when batteries are char ging.
Electrical current safety information DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid a shock hazard: • Do not use your computer during a lightning storm.
Using headphones or earphones If your computer has both a headphone connector and an audio-out connector , always use the headphone connector for headphones (also called a headset) or earphones. CA UTION: Excessive sound pressure from earphones and headphones can cause hearing loss.

4 Computer display The high-r esolution thin-lm tr ansistor (TFT) premium display provides clear and brilliant te xt and gr aphics. F or details, refer to the instructions in Changing display settings. 5 Built-in microphone The built-in microphone captur es sound and voice when it is used with an application progr am capable of handling audio.
12 Bluetooth antenna (some models) If your comput er comes with the integr ated Bluetooth features, the ant enna is located under the right side of the palm rest.
1 4-in-1 Media card reader Y ou can install an SD Car d, an SDHC Card, an SDX C Card, and an MMC Car d (MultiMediaCard), in the Media card reader of your computer .
3 Combo audio jack Y our computer has a combo audio jack. T o listen to the sound fr om your computer , connect a headphone or a headset, that has a 3.5 mm 4-pole plug, to the combo audio jack. The combo audio jack does not support a conventional microphone.
2 Emergency reset hole If your computer st ops responding and you cannot turn it off by pr essing the power switch, r emove the ac power adapt er and reset the computer by inserting a needle or a str aightened paper clip into the emergency reset hole to turn off the computer .
2 P ower jack The ac power adapter cable connects to the comput er power jack to provide power to the computer and charge the battery . An indicator to the left of the connector shows the status of ac power . When the ac power adapter is connected the indicat or is lit and gr een.
DANGER T o avoid the risk of electrical shock, do not connect the telephone cable to the Ethernet connector . Y ou can only connect an Ethernet cable to this connector . Status indicators The status indicators show the current status of your comput er .
The meaning of the indicator is as follows: • Green: The ac power adapter is connect ed. • Off: The ac power adapter is not connected. The comput er has status indicat ors that show the mode (sleep, hibernation, or normal) and the status of the battery .
Note: If the comput er is operating on batt ery power , the batt ery status indicator does not work while the computer is turned off or is in sleep mode or hibernation mode. Y ou can use the following indicat ors if your comput er supports the corresponding function.
FCC ID and IC Certication number label There is no FCC ID or IC Certication number for the PCI Express Mini Car d shown on the enclosure of your computer . The FCC ID and IC Certication number label is afxed on the car d installed in the Mini PCI Express Card slot of your computer .
If no integr ated wir eless PCI Express Mini Car d has been pr einstalled in your computer , you can install one. T o do this, follow the pr ocedure in Replacing the PCI Express Mini Card for wireless LAN/WiMAX connection or Installing and replacing the PCI Expr ess Mini Car d for wireless WAN connection.

V olume and mute butt ons Y ou can adjust the sound level of the built-in speakers by using the following thr ee buttons: 1 Microphone mute 2 V olume contr ol button 3 Speaker mute butt on If you mute the sound and then turn off your comput er , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your computer again.

This setting enables the use of all basic and ext ended functions with the touch pad while limiting the use of the T r ackPoint t o scrolling and Magnifying Glass functions. • Set the T rackP oint as the main pointing device, and disable the touch pad.
Customizing the T rackP oint Y ou can cust omize the T r ackP oint pointing device and its butt ons as follows: • Switch the functions of the left and right butt ons. • Change the sensitivity of the T r ackP oint. • Enable the P ress-to-Select function.
The whole t ouch pad 1 is an active ar ea sensitive to nger movement. The bottom ar ea of the t ouch pad consists of a left click zone 3 and a right click zone 2 . Movement on the touch pad emulat es oper ations on the mouse. Befor e int eracting with the t ouch pad, make sure the cursor stays on the object that you want to oper ate.
Customizing the touch pad T o customize the touch pad, do as follows: 1. Click Start ➙ Control P anel ➙ Hardware and Sound ➙ Mouse ➙ UltraNav . A panel for UltraNav Device Settings pops up. 2. Click Manage Settings to open the Mouse pr operties window .
Do mor e, save more and spend more time unplugged with ThinkP ad batt eries. Mobility has revolutioniz ed business by allowing you to take your work wher e ever you go. With ThinkP ad batt eries, you will be able to work longer without being tied to an electrical outlet.
If an ac outlet is convenient, plug the ac power adapter into it, and then insert the jack into the computer . The battery will charge in about 3 to 6 hours.
T o put your computer into sleep mode, press Fn+F4. T o r eturn from sleep mode, pr ess the Fn key . • Hibernation By using this mode, you can turn off your computer completely without saving les or e xiting from any applications that are running.
DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an explosion. The battery pack contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
The Access Connections progr am is a connectivity assistant progr am for creating and managing location proles. Each location prole stor es all the network and Internet conguration settings needed for connecting to a network infrastructur e from a specic location such as a home or an ofce.
Tips for using the wireless LAN feature • Place your computer so that ther e are as few obstacles as possible between the wir eless LAN access point and the comput er . • F or the best connection of the wireless LAN feature, open your comput er display to an angle of slightly more than 90 degrees.
Some ThinkP ad notebooks come with a built-in wireless WAN card integrating some wir eless W AN technologies, such as 1xEV -DO, HSP A, 3G or GPRS. Y ou can connect to the Internet or your company network with the built-in wir eless W AN car d and the congur ation utility to make a wir eless W AN connection and monit or its status.
My Bluetooth Places T o use the Bluetooth featur es, do the following: 1. Double-click the My Bluetooth Places icon on the deskt op. A list of the devices on which Bluetooth has been enabled appears.
F or details, r efer to the help for Bluetooth . T o see the help, double-click My Bluetooth Places , and click Help and then Bluetooth help . Y ou can nd mor e detailed information about the signal strength and status of your wireless connection either by opening Access Connections or by double-clicking the Access Connections wir eless status icon in the task bar .

Creating r ecover y media This section pr ovides instructions on how to creat e recovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating system. Note: On the Windows 7 operating syst em, you can create r ecovery me.
• T o perform a backup oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram on the Windows 7 operating system, do the following: 1. F rom the Windows desktop, click Start ➙ All P rograms ➙ Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restore .
1. Make sure the comput er is turned off. 2. Repeatedly pr ess and r elease the F11 key when turning on the computer . When you hear beeps or see a logo screen, release the F11 key . 3. If you have set a Rescue and Recovery passwor d, type your passwor d when prompt ed.
2. Repeatedly press and r elease the F12 key when turning on the computer . When the Startup Device Menu opens, release the F12 key . 3. On the Startup Device Menu , select the USB hard disk drive as the rst boot device and press Ent er . The r escue medium starts.
• In the subfolder for the device, look for the le for the application (a le with the e xtension .ex e). Double-click the le, and follow the instructions on the screen. Attention: If you need updated device drivers, do not download them fr om the Windows Update W eb site.
Chapter 6. Replacing devices Y ou can increase the capacity of the memory or the har d disk drive by r eplacing the original, built-in device with an optional one. Or , if you need to, you can r eplace the PCI Express Mini Car d by following the pr ocedures in this section.
5. Click Y es in the Setup Warning window. Wait for a few minutes till the inside of the computer cools, and then you can r eplace the failed component safely . Replacing the har d disk drive or solid stat e drive Before you start, print these instructions.
5. Detach the side rubber r ails from the hard disk drive. 6. Attach the side rubber r ails to a new hard disk drive. 7. Insert the new hard disk drive into the hard disk drive bay, then press it rmly into place. 8. Insert the slot cover 1 , then slide in the cover 2 and tighten the scr ew 3 .
9. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and the cables t o the comput er . Replacing the solid state drive The replacement procedur e of solid state drive is the same with the pr ocedure of r eplacing the hard disk drive. Refer t o Replacing the hard disk drive for detailed instructions.
4. T urn the comput er over and open the display . 5. Push in the dir ection shown by the arr ows 1 t o unlatch the fr ont side of the k eyboard. The keyboar d will open up slightly 2 . 6. Car efully lift the keyboar d until you can see how it's connected.
Installing the keyboard 1. Attach the connectors. 2. Insert the keyboar d. Make sur e that the r ear edges of the k eyboard ar e under the fr ame as shown by the arr ows.
4. Close the computer display and turn the computer over . Then reinstall the two scr ews. 5. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapter and cables t o the comput er . Replacing memory Before you start, print these instructions. Increasing memory capacity is an effective way to make progr ams run faster .
Replacing memory T o replace the SO-DIMM, do the following: 1. Enter ThinkP ad Setup to stop battery discharge. Refer to Befor e replacing CRU for detailed instruction. 2. Close the computer display, and turn the comput er over . 3. Remove the keyboar d.
Replacing the PCI Expr ess Mini Card for wireless LAN/WiMAX connection Before you start, print these instructions. Y our comput er has a PCI Express Mini Card slot for connection to a wireless LAN/WiMAX. T o replace the PCI Express Mini C ard with a new one, read the following pr erequisites.
6. Remove the card. 7. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini C ard with the corresponding socket contact of the computer . 8. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place. Secur e the card with the scr ew. 9. Connect the cables to the new PCI Express Mini C ard.
Note: If the new PCI Expr ess Mini Car d has only two connectors, be sur e t o attach the gray cable to the connector marked “MAIN, ” and the black cable t o the connector marked “ AUX. ” Put the whit e cable in the cable pr otection tube. 10.
Note: Depending on the syst em congur ation of your computer , the car d may have only one connector . 5. Remove the scr ew and the card will pop up. 6. Remove the card. 7. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini C ard with the corresponding socket contact of the computer .
Note: Y ou can also r eplace the PCI Express Mini Car d for Wireless W AN with an mSA T A solid stat e drive. Refer to Installing and r eplacing the mSA T A solid stat e drive for more information. 9. Connect the cables to the new PCI Express Mini Card.
The mSA T A solid stat e drive is very sensitive. Incorrect handling can cause damage and permanent loss of data. Before r emoving the mSA T A solid state drive, make a backup copy of all the information on it, and then turn the computer off.
7. Pivot the card downward 1 until you can snap it int o place. Secure the car d with the scr ew 2 . Note: Y ou can also replace the mSA T A solid stat e drive with a Wireless PCI Expr ess Mini C ard for Wireless W AN. F or more information, refer t o Installing and replacing the PCI Express Mini Card for wireless WAN connection.
5. P osition the new backup battery in place, then attach the connector . 6. Reinstall the keyboar d. F or more details, r efer to Replacing the keyboard.
Installing the SIM card 1. Enter ThinkP ad Setup to stop battery discharge. Refer to Befor e replacing CRU for detailed instruction. 2. Find the SIM card slot at the rear side of the comput er . Refer to Rear view t o locate the SIM car d slot. 3. Release the knob 1 and use your nger to ip out the SIM car d slot cover 2 .
Removing the SIM card 1. Enter ThinkP ad Setup to stop battery discharge. Refer to Befor e replacing CRU for detailed instruction. 2. Find the SIM card slot at the rear side of the comput er . Refer to Rear view t o locate the SIM car d slot. 3. Release the knob 1 and use your nger to ip out the SIM car d slot cover 2 .

ThinkP ad Battery 39+ bottom view 1 Eject lever Use the eject lever to lock or unlock the ThinkP ad Batt ery 39+. 2 Battery latch Use the battery latch to pr event the eject lever from being r eleased. Detaching a ThinkP ad Battery 39+ Note: Disconnect the ac power adapter from your computer before you detach the ThinkP ad Battery 39+. The ac power adapter connector will be damaged if it remains connect ed t o the comput er during the detachment. T o detach a ThinkP ad Battery 39+, do the following: 1.
