Chapter 1. About this manual This manual contains service and refer ence information for ThinkCentr e® computer machine types listed on the front cover . All the information in this manual is intended only for tr ained Service P roviders who ar e familiar with L enovo® comput er pr oducts.

Chapter 2. Safety information This chapt er contains the safety information that you need t o r ead and understand befor e servicing a computer . General safety F ollow these rules to ensure gener al safety: • Observe good housek eeping in the area of the machines during and after maint enance.
Important: Use only appr oved tools and t est equipment. Some hand tools have handles cover ed with a soft material that does not insulat e you when working with live electrical curr ents. Many customers have, near their equipment, rubber oor mats that contain small conductive bers t o decr ease electr ostatic dischar ges.
V oltage-selection switch Some computers ar e equipped with a voltage-selection switch located near the power -cord connection point on the computer . If your computer has a voltage-selection switch, ensure that you set the switch to match the voltage available at your electrical outlet.

Be e xtremely car eful during writ e oper ations such as copying, saving, or formatting. Data or progr ams can be overwritt en if you select an incorrect drive.

Chapter 5. Diagnostics Diagnostic pr ograms are used to t est hardwar e components of your computer and r eport operating-syst em-controlled settings that can cause har dware failur es.
PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery The PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery diagnostic pr ogram is part of the Rescue and Recovery workspace on each L enovo comput er . Use the PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery pr ogram if you are unable t o start the Windows oper ating system.
3. F ollow the instructions on the scr een to select the diagnostic test you want t o run. Note: F or additional help, pr ess the F1 key . 4. Remove the diagnostic disc from the optical drive when you complete the diagnostic process. Navigating through the diagnostics progr ams Use the cursor movement k eys t o navigat e within the menus.
• Date: Contains the date when the diagnostic test was run. The dat e is retrieved fr om CMOS and displayed using the YYYYMMDD format. • ChkDigits: Contains a 2-digit check-digit value t o ensur e the following: – Diagnostics wer e run on the specied date.
Chapter 6. Using the Setup Utility progr am Y ou can use the Setup Utility pr ogram t o view and change the congur ation settings of your comput er , regar dless of which oper ating syst em you are using. However , the oper ating syst em settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
P assword consider ations A passwor d can be any combination of up to 16 (1 to 16) alphabetic and numeric char acters. F or security reasons, it is r ecommended t o use a strong password that cannot be easily compr omised. T o set a strong password, use the following guidelines: Note: The Setup Utility pr ogram passwor ds ar e not case sensitive.
SA T A Controller When this option is set to Disabled , all devices connect ed to the SA T A connectors (such as the hard disk drive or the optical drive) ar e disabled and will not be displayed in the system congur ation. Chapter 8. Replacing FRUs Important Be sure to r ead and understand the Chapt er 2 “Safety information” on page 3 before r eplacing any FRU . These precautions and guidelines will help you work safely . FRU replacements ar e to be done only by trained service t echnicians.

1. Remove any media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . 2. Unplug all power cor ds fr om electrical outlets. 3. Disconnect the cables attached to the computer . This includes power cor ds, Input/Output (I/O) cables, and any other cables that ar e connect ed t o the computer .

T o r emove and r einstall the fr ont bez el, do the following: 1. Remove the computer cover . See “Removing the computer cover ” on page 68. 2. Release the three plastic tabs on the left side of the front bez el and pivot the fr ont bez el outward t o remove it.
3. Locate the memory slots. See “Locating parts on the syst em board” on page 70. 4. Open the retaining clips. Figure 7. Opening the retaining clips If you ar e replacing an old memory module, open the r etaining clips and r emove the memory module being r eplaced as shown.

4. Install the new car d into the appr opriate card slot on the syst em board. See “L ocating parts on the system boar d” on page 70. If you are r eplacing a PCI car d, r emove the old car d currently installed before installing the new one. Figure 11.

CA UTION: The heat sink and fan assembly might be very hot. T urn off the comput er and wait three to ve minut es to let the computer cool befor e removing the computer cover . T o r eplace the heat sink and fan assembly, do the following: 1. Remove the computer cover .
8. Alternate tightening each screw a small and equal amount until the heat sink and fan assembly is secured t o the syst em boar d. Do not over-tight en the screws. 9. Connect the new heat sink and fan assembly cable to the micr oprocessor fan connect or on the syst em board.
8. Lift the micr oprocessor str aight up and out of the socket. Notes: a. Y our micropr ocessor and socket might look differ ent from the one illustr ated. b. Not e the orientation of the micr oprocessor in the socket. Y ou can look for the small triangle 1 on one corner of the micr oprocessor .

11. Install the heat sink and fan assembly and connect the heat sink and fan assembly cable t o the micropr ocessor fan connect or on the new syst em board. See “Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly” on page 78. 12. Install the new syst em boar d int o the chassis and align the scr ew holes with those in the chassis.
5. Remove the har d disk drive cage from the chassis by simply sliding it outwar d. 6. Pull on the blue handle 3 to release and r emove the har d disk drive fr om the drive cage. 7. Remove the har d disk drive from the blue brack et by e xing the sides of the bracket enough t o slide it free from the hard disk drive.

Completing the FRU replacement This section pr ovides instructions on how t o complete the FRU replacement. After replacing the FRUs, you need to r einstall any removed parts, r econnect and r oute any internal cables, reinstall the computer cover , and r econnect any ext ernal cables, such as power cords.
8. Some FRU replacements require the congur ation t o be updated. T o update your congur ation, see Chapter 6 “Using the Setup Utility pr ogram” on page 39.
