Chapter 1. Important safety information CAUTION: Before using this manual, it is important that you read and understand all the related safety information for this product. Refer to the Safety and Warranty Guide that you received with this product for the latest safety information.

Chapter 2. Overview This guide is intended to be used by customers who are installing optional featur es or replacing Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs).
v Always handle parts and other computer components carefully . Handle adapters, memory modules, system boards, and micr oprocessors by the edges. Never touch any exposed circuitry . v Prevent others from touching the parts and other computer components.
Locating connectors on the rear of your computer Figure 2 shows the location of connectors on the r ear of the computer . 1 Standard mouse connector 9 PCI Expr ess x16 graphics adapter con.
Connector Description Standard mouse connector Used to attach a mouse, trackball, or other pointing device that uses a standard mouse connector . Parallel connector Used to attach a parallel printer , parallel scanner , or other devices that use a 25-pin parallel connector .
Locating components Figure 3 will help you locate the various components in your computer . 1 Fan plenum, fan, and heat sink 7 Battery 2 Micropr ocessor 8 Power supply 3 .
Locating parts on the system board The system board (sometimes called the planar or motherboar d) is the main circuit board in your computer . It provides basic computer functions and supports a variety of devices. Figure 4 shows the locations of parts on the system boar d.

5. Press the cover-r elease button on the top of the computer cover , slide the cover to the rear , and remove it. If your computer has screws to secur e the computer cover , remove the screws, and then r emove the cover .
3. In some models, you might have to remove the PCI adapters to gain access to system board components. 4. Using the blue handle 1 , lift and slide the drive bay assembly forward until the locating studs in the drive bay assembly are aligned with the slots on the sides of the chassis.
Installing internal options Important Read “Handling static-sensitive devices” on page 3 before opening the computer cover . Installing memory Y our computer has two connectors for installing double data rate 2 dual inline memory modules (DDR2 DIMMs) that provide up to a maximum of 4.
6. Position the memory module over the memory connector . Make sur e that the notch 1 on the memory module aligns correctly with the connector key 2 on the system board. Push the memory module straight down into the connector until the retaining clips close.
2. Open the adapter latch and remove the connector cover for the appropriate expansion connector . 3. Remove the adapter from its static-protective package. 4. Install the adapter into the appropriate connector on the system board. 5. Close the adapter latch to secure the adapter .
Installing internal drives This section provides information and instr uctions for installing and removing internal drives. Internal drives are devices that your computer uses to r ead and store data. Yo u can add drives to your computer to increase storage capacity and to enable your computer to read other types of media.
The following illustration shows the locations of the drive bays. The following list describes the types and size of drives you can install in each bay: 1 Bay 1 - Maximum height: 43.0 mm (1.7 in.) Optical drives, such as CD drive or DVD drive (preinstalled in some models) 3.
Installing a drive in bay 1 To install an optical drive or an additional hard disk drive in bay 1, do the following: 1. Remove the computer cover . See “Removing the cover” on page 9. 2. Access the system board. See “Accessing system board components and drives” on page 10.
Connecting drives The steps to connect a drive are dif ferent depending on the type of drive you ar e connecting. Use one of the following procedur es for your drive connection. Connecting a parallel ATA drive: 1. Locate the two-connector signal cable that comes with your computer or with the new drive.
Installing a diskette drive in bay 3 To install a diskette drive in bay 3, do the following: 1. Remove the computer cover . See “Removing the cover” on page 9. 2. Access the system board. See “Accessing system board components and drives” on page 10.
Replacing the battery Y our computer has a special type of memory that maintains the date, time, and settings for built-in features, such as parallel-port assignments (configuration). A battery keeps this information active when you turn off the computer .

5. Install the new drive into the blue bracket, flex the bracket, and align the pins 1 through 4 on the bracket with the holes in the har d disk drive. Do not touch the circuit boar d 5 on the bottom of the hard disk drive. 6. Connect the signal and power cables to the rear of the hard disk drive.

6. Position the new heat sink on the plastic retention bracket so that the four screws ar e aligned with the posts on the system board. T ighten the four screws 1 to the heat sink and fan assembly to the system boar d. 7. Connect the microprocessor fan cable to the micr oprocessor fan connector on the system board.

Chapter 4. Completing the parts replacement After working with parts, you need to replace the computer cover and r econnect any cables, including telephone lines and power cords. Also, depending on the part that was replaced, you might need to confirm the updated information in the Setup Utility program.

Chapter 5. Security features To help prevent har dware theft and unauthorized access to your computer , several security lock options are available. In addition to a physical lock, unauthorized use of your computer can be prevented by a softwar e lock that locks the keyboard until a correct passwor d is typed in.
Padlock Y our computer is equipped with a padlock loop such that the cover cannot be removed when a padlock is installed. Password protection To deter unauthorized use of your computer , you can use the Setup Utility program to set a passwor d.
3. Locate the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper on the system board. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 8. 4. Move the jumper from the standard position (pins 1 and 2) to the maintenance or configure position (pins 2 and 3). 5. Replace the computer cover and connect the power cord.
