9 Chapter 3 Setup This Chapter provides Setup deta ils of the LevelOne Broadband Router. Overview This chapter describes the setup procedure for: • Internet Access • LAN confi guration • Assi gning a Password to protect the configurat ion data. PCs on your local LAN m ay also require configuration.
LevelOne Broadband Router User Guide Configuration Program The LevelOne Broadband Router contains an HTTP server. This enabl es you to connect to it, and configure it, using your Web Browser. Your Brow ser must support JavaScript . The configuration program has been tested on the following browsers: • Netscape V4.
Setup If you can't connect If the LevelOne Broadband Router does not respond, check the fol lowing: • The Level One Broadband Router is prope rly installed, LAN connection is OK, and it is powered ON. You can test t he connection by using the "Ping" com - mand: • Open the MS-DOS window or comm and prompt window.
LevelOne Broadband Router User Guide Setup Wizard The first time you connect to the LevelOn e Broadband Router, the Setup Wizard will run automatically. (The Setup Wizard will also run if the LevelOne Broadband Router's default setting are restored.
Setup You connect to the ISP only when required. The IP address is usually allocated auto m ati- cally, but may be Static (Fixed). • User nam e and password.

Setup Password Screen The password screen allows you to assign a password to the Level One Broadband Router. Figure 8: Password Screen Once you have assigned a password to th e LevelOne Broadband Rout er (on the Password screen above) you will be prompted for the pa ssword when you connect, as shown below.

LevelOne Broadband Router User Guide Printer Setup for Windows (FBR-1403TX only) The FBR-1403TX LevelOne Broadband Router pr ovides printing support for 2 m ethods for printing from Windows: • Print Port Driver. After instal ling the Print Port Dri ver, Windows users can print di- rectly to the LevelOne Broadband Router.

In Control Panel, select Add/Remove Program s, then Windows Com ponents. 2. Select Other Network File and Print Services , then click the Details button.

Operation and Status Data - Status Screen Internet Connection Method This indicates the current connecti on method, as set i n the Setup Wizard. Broadband Modem This shows the connection status of the m odem.
LevelOne Broadband Router User Guide Buttons Connection Details View the details of the current Internet connection. The sub- screen displayed will depend on the connection method used. See the following sections for details of each sub-screen. System Data Display all sy stem inform ation in a sub-window.
Operation and Status • If t he connection does not exist, the "Connect " button can be used to establish a connection. • If the connection currently exists, the "Disconnect" b utton can be used to break the connection.
LevelOne Broadband Router User Guide Error: Invalid or unknown packet type The data received from the ISP' s Server could not be proc- essed. This could be caused by data corruption (from a bad link), or the Server using a protocol which is not supported by this device.
Operation and Status existing connection. • The "Clear Log" button will restart the Log, while the Refresh button will update the messages shown on screen. Buttons Connect If not connected, establi sh a connection to your ISP. Disconnect If connected to your ISP, hang up the connection.

Operation and Status Data - RAS Internet RAS Plan The RAS Plan which is currently used . Physical Address The hardware address of this device, as seen by rem ote devices on the Internet. (This is different to the hardware address seen by devices on the local LAN.
LevelOne Broadband Router User Guide Connection Details - Fixed/Dynamic IP Address If your access method is "Direct" (no login), a screen like the follo wing exam ple will be displayed when the "Connect ion Details" butt on is clicked.
Operation and Status Buttons Release/Renew Button will display EITHER "Release" OR "Renew" This button is only useful if the IP address shown above is allocated automati cally on connection. (Dynam ic IP address). If you have a Fixed (Static) IP address, thi s button has no effect.

LevelOne Broadband Router User Guide Special Applications If you use Internet applicat ions which use non- standard connections or port num bers, you m ay find that they do not function co rrectly because they are bloc ked by the LevelOne Broadband Router's firewall.
Advanced Features Data - Special Applications Screen Checkbox Use this to Enable or Disab le this Special Application as required. Name Enter a descriptive name to identify this Sp ecial Application. Incoming Ports • Type - Select the protocol (TCP or UDP) used when you receive data from the special application or serv ice.
LevelOne Broadband Router User Guide The "DMZ PC" is effectively outside the Firew all, mak- ing it more vulnerable to attacks. For this reason, y ou should only enable the DMZ feature when required.

LevelOne Broadband Router User Guide PC Database The PC Database is used whenever you need to select a PC (e.g. for the "DMZ" PC). It elimi- nates the need to enter IP addresses. Also, y ou do not need to use fixed IP addresses on your LAN. PC Database Screen An example PC Data base screen is shown below.

Advanced Configuration Allow Configu- ration... • If checked, then UPnP users can change the configuration. • If Disabled, UPnP users can only view the configurat ion. But currently, this rest riction only appli es to users running Windows XP, who access the Properties via UPnP.

LevelOne Broadband Router User Guide Logs The Logs record various types of activit y on the LevelOne Broadband Router. This dat a is useful for troubleshooting, but enabling all logs will generate a large amount of data and adversely affect performance.
Advanced Configuration E-mail Logs You can choose to have the logs E-mailed to you, by enabl ing either or both checkboxes. If enab led, the Log will sent to the specified E-mail address. The interval between E-mails is deter- mined by the "Send" set ting.
LevelOne Broadband Router User Guide Printer Port (FBR-1403TX only) On the FBR-1403TX, the following sc reen is available. These settings are only useful if using LPD printing under Unix.
Advanced Configuration MAC Address The MAC (hardware) address is a low-level ne twork identifier. It may be called "MAC Ad- dress", "Hardware Address", or "Physical Address" . On a PC, this address is associated with the Network card or adapter.
