Setting up the printer Granting access to the software during installation Third-party applications, including antivirus, securi ty, and firewall programs may alert you about the printer soft ware being installed. For your printer to work proper ly, you must grant acce ss to the printer softw are.
2 Remove tape and packing material from all areas of the printer. 3 Raise the printer control panel. 4 If a stick-on overlay for your language needs to be installed, peel off the cove ring from the back of the overlays to expose the adhesive.
6 Extend the paper exit tray. 2 1 7 Raise the paper support, and then press down on the paper adjustment lever to extend the paper guides. 8 Load paper, and th en pull up the p aper adjustment lever to adjust the pa per guides. The pape r guides should rest against the edges of the paper.
9 Connect the power cord to the p rinter. 1 2 CAUTION—SHOCK HAZARD: Read the safety information included with this product before connecting power or making any cabling con nections. 10 If the printer does not automatically turn on, press . 11 If prompted, se t the language.

Changing the Power Saver timeout You can customi ze the Power Saver tim eout of the printer. Th e Power Saver timeout is th e time it takes for t he printer to switch to Power Saver mode when the printer is left idle. Ch ange the Power Saver ti meout to avoid interruptions when doing multiple jobs on your printer.
Using the World Wide Web 1 Go to the Lexmark Web site at www.lexmark.com . 2 From the home page, navigate through the menu selection, and then click Drivers & Downloads . 3 Choose the printer and the printer dr iver for your operating system. 4 Follow the instructions on the screens to downlo ad the driver and install the printer software.
Using the Windows printer software When you set up the printer using the printer software CD , all the necessary software was installed. You may h ave chosen to install some additional prog rams. The following table provides an overview of various software programs and what they can help you do.

Advanced wireless setup Creating an ad hoc wireless network The recommended way to set up your wireless network is to use a wireless access point (w ireless router). A network set up this way is called an infrastructure network . If you have an infrastructure network, you should configure the printer for use on that ne twork.
In Windows XP 1 Click Start . 2 Click Control Panel . 3 Click Network and Internet Connections . 4 Click Network Connections . 5 Right-click the icon for your wireless network connection. 6 Click Ena ble , if it appears in the pop-up m enu. Note: If Enable does not appear, your wire less connection is already enabled.
23 It may take a few minutes for your comp uter to recognize the new settings. To check on the status of your network: a Right-click the Wireless Network Connections icon. b Select View Available Wireless Networks . • If the network is list ed but the comp uter is not co nnected, sele ct the ad hoc net work and the n click Connect .

Where do I find my SSID? You can find the SSID for the wireless network by viewing the settings on th e access point or wireless router. Most access points have a built-in Web server that can be accessed using a Web browser.
A valid WPA passphrase has: • From 8 to 63 ASCII characters. ASCII char acters in a WPA passphr ase are case-sensitive. or • Exactly 64 hexadecimal characters. Hexade cimal characters are A-F, a-f, and 0-9. Every device on the wireless network must use the sam e WPA passphrase.
Wireless network examples Scenario 1: Mixed wi red and wireless connections o n a network with Internet acce ss • All computers and printers connect to the network thro ugh a ro uter with Ethernet and wireless capabilities. • Some computers and printers connect wirelessly to the router; others connect over a wired connection.
Scenario 3: Wireless network with no Inter net access • Computers and printers connect to th e network using a wireless access point. • The network has no connection to the Internet.
How do I attach the installation cable? The installation cable attaches to a USB port on the comput er and to the square connector on the back of the printer. This connection allows you to conf igure the printer for a networked or locally attached installation.

How can I improve wireless signal strength? A common reason wireless printers fail to communicate over a network is poor wireless signal qual ity. If the signal is too weak, too distorted, or blocke d by an object, it cannot carry inform ation between the access point and the printer.
Can I use my printer on a USB and a network connection at the same time? Yes, the printer supports a simultaneous USB and network co nnection. The printer can be configured in the following ways: • .
The MAC address is a series of letters and nu mbers located on the back of your prin ter. Loading paper Loading paper 1 Make sure: • You use paper designed for inkjet printers. • If you are using photo, glossy, or heav yweight matte paper, you load it with the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the printable side, see the in structions th at came with the paper.
Heavyweight matte paper, photo paper, glossy paper You can load up to 25 sheets. Make sure: • The glossy or printable side of the pa per faces you. (If you are not sure whic h side is the printab le side, then see the instructions that came with the paper.
• The label sheets are loaded in the center of the paper support. • The paper guides rest against the e dges of the label sheets. Note: Labels require more dryin g time. Remove e ach sheet of labe ls as it exits, and then allow it to dry to avoid ink smudging.
Custom-size paper You can load up to 100 sheets (depending on the thickness). Make sure: • The print side of the paper faces you. • The paper size fits within these dimensions: Width: – 76.2–215.9 mm – 3.0–8.5 inches Length: – 127.0–355.
Loading original documents on the scanner glass You can scan and then print photos, text documents, ma gazine articles, newspapers, and oth er publications. You can scan a document for faxing. You can also scan three-dime nsional objects for use in catal ogs, brochures, or product flyers.
4 Close the top cove r to avoid dark ed ges on the scanned image. Loading original documents into the Automatic Document Feeder You can load up to 25 sheets of an original document into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) for scanning, copying, and faxing.

5 Click OK to close any printe r software dialogs. 6 Click OK or Print . Using Macintosh 1 With a document open, click File Print . 2 From the print options pop-up menu, choose Layout . • From the Pages per Sheet pop-up menu, choose the numb er of page images that you want to print on one sheet.

Using Mac OS X version 10.5 1 From the menu bar, click System Preferences Print & Fax . 2 Click Open Print Queue . The print queue dialog appears. • If you want to resume a partic ular print jo b, choose the document name, and th en click Resume .

Working with photos Connecting photo storage devices Inserting a memory card 1 Insert a memory ca rd. • Insert the card with the brand name label fac ing up.
2 Wait for the light loc ated near the top memory card slot on the print er to come on. The light blinks to indicate the memory card is being read or is transmitting data.
Note: The printer recogn izes one active media device at a t ime. If you insert more th an one media device, a message appears on the displa y prompting you to designate the device you want th e printer to recognize. Printing photos Printing photos using the printer control panel 1 Load photo paper with the glossy or printable side facing you.

Printing photos from a PictBridge-enabled digital camera PictBridge is a technology available in most digital camera s that lets you p rint directly from your d igital camera without using a computer. You can conn ect a PictBridge-enabled digital camer a to the printe r, and use the camera to control printing photos.
Notes: • If you insert the camera wh ile the printe r is performing another job, wait for the job to finish befor e printing from the camera. • To use the camera to control printing photos, see the instructions in the camera documentation. Printing photos stored on a memory device using the proof sheet 1 Load letter- or A4-size pl ain paper.
Printing photos from a digital camera using DPOF Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) is a feature available on some digital cameras. If your camera supports DPOF, then you can specify which photos to print, how many of each, and the print settings while the memory card is still in the camera.
Scanning For more options on scanning and customizing scanned image s, see the Help associated with the programs installed with the printer soft ware. Scanning original documents You can scan and then print photos, text documents, ma gazine articles, newspapers, and oth er publications.
• If you choose to send th e scanned image to a memory card or flash drive: a Insert the memo ry device. Note: Make sure that the memory de vice is not write-protected. b Press the arrow buttons until Memory Card or USB Flash Drive appears, and then press .
Using Macintosh 1 Open the top c over, and then load an origin al document facedown on the scanner glass. 2 Close the top cove r to avoid dark ed ges on the scanned image. 3 From the Finder desktop, doub le-click the printer folder. 4 Double-click XXXX Series Center , where XXX X is the printer series.
5 Wait for the printer to finish downloading the applications list. Note: This list is downloaded from th e applications available on the co mputer. Make sure a photo-editing application is installed on the computer. 6 From the list of applicat ions, press the arrow bu tton s until the application that you want appears.
Using Windows To cancel a scan job started in the Lexmark Productivi ty Studio, click Stop on the computer scre en. Using Macintosh To cancel a scan job started in th e Le xmark All-in-O ne Center, click Cancel on the computer screen.
Copying Making copies 1 Load paper. 2 Load an original document faceup into the Automatic Do cument Feeder (ADF) or facedown on the scanner glass. Notes: • Do not load postcards, photos, small items, transparenci es, photo paper, or thin media (such as magazine clippings) into the ADF.
3 From the printer control panel, press . 4 Press until Resize appears. 5 Press the arrow buttons until the setting that you want appears. Notes: • If you select Custom Resize, press to enter the next menu, and then press the arrow buttons until the setting that you want appears.
4 Press until Lighter/Darker appears. 5 Press the arrow buttons to adjust the slider, and then press to save your setting. Note: Pressing the left arrow button makes the c opy lighte r, and pressing the right arrow button makes the copy darker. 6 Press .
Repeating an image on one page You can print the same page image multiple times on one shee t of paper. Th is option is helpful when creating labels, decals, flyers, handouts, and so on. 1 Load paper. 2 Load an original document faceup into the Automatic Do cument Feeder (ADF) or facedown on the scanner glass.
9 Repeat steps 7 and 8 until all the pages that you want to copy have been saved to the printer memory. 10 When asked if you want to scan anot her page, press the arrow buttons until No appears, and then press to start printing. Canceling a copy job 1 Press .
Faxing CAUTION—SHOCK HAZARD: Do not use the fax feature during a lightn ing storm. D o not set up this p roduct or make any electrical or cab ling conn ections, such as th e power supply c ord or telephone, during a lightnin g storm.
Notes: • Do not load postcards, photos, small items, transparenci es, photo paper, or thin media (such as magazine clippings) into the ADF. Place these items on the scanner glass. • Adjust the paper guide on the ADF tray to the width of the original document.
9 If necessary, repeat step 8 and then press until a maximum of 30 fax numbers have been entered. 10 Press to start scanning the document. Note: At the designated time, t he fax numbers are dialed an d th e fax is sent to all of the designated fax numbers.
3 Set the answering machine to answer incoming calls before the printer does. For example, if you set the answering machine to answer calls after three r ings, set the printer to answer calls after five rings. Forwarding faxes Use the fax-forwarding feature if you are going to be away , but still want to receive your faxes.
e Repeat steps c through d as necessary. You can enter up to 30 fax numbers for the group. If you do not want to add another fax nu mber, press the arrow buttons until No appears, and then press . f Enter the group name in the Enter name field, and then press to save the entry.

4 If a black cartridge is included in the box contents, re move the tape from the back and bottom of the black cartridge, insert the cartridge in th e left carrier, and then close the black cartridge carrier lid. Warning—Potential Damage: Do not touch the gold contact are a on the back or the met al nozzles on the bottom of the cartridge.
The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at th e loading position, unless the printer is busy. 3 Press down on th e cartri dge carrier latch to raise the c artridge carrier li d. W F I I P R I N T I N G 4 Remove the used print car tridge. Note: If you are removing both cartridges, repeat step 3 and step 4 for the second cartridge.
