Understanding the control panel Control panel item Description 1 Display Shows messages and pi ctures that co mmuni cate the sta tus of the printer 2 Indicator light Indicates the printer status: • Off —The power is off. • Blinking gr een —The printer is warm ing up, processing d ata, or printing.
Installing options Installing internal options CAUTION: If you are installing memory or option cards sometime after setting up the printer, turn the printer off and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet b efore continuing. If you have a ny other devices attached to the printer, turn them off as well and unplug any cables going to the printer.
Note: This operation requires a #2 Phillips screwdriver. 1 Remove the cover an d system board. a Turn the screws on the cover counter clockwise, and th en remove the m. b Gently pull the cover and system board away from the printer, and then remove it.

4 Align the notches on the memory card with the ridges on the connec tor. 1 Notches 2 Ridges 5 Push the memory card straight into the connector until it snaps into place. 6 Reinstall the system board. Installing a flash memory or firmware card The system board has two connections fo r an optional flash memory or firmw are card.

Note: A #2 Phillips screwdriver is needed to attach the hard disk to the mounting plate. 1 Access the system board. 2 Remove the mounting plate, hard disk, ribb on cable, and atta chment screws from the pa ckage. 3 Attach the ribbon cable to th e hard disk.
5 Press the ribbon cable connector into the hard disk connector on the system board. 6 Flip the hard disk over, and then pre ss the three posts on the mounting pl ate into the holes on the system board. The hard disk snaps into place. 7 Reinstall the system board.
An internal print server allows con nection from the printer to the lo cal area network (LAN). An optional port interface card expands the ways the printer can co nnect to a computer or external print serve r. 1 Access the system board. 2 Unpack the in ternal print serv er or port interface c ard.
Note: This operation requires a #2 Phillips screwdriver. 1 Gently insert the system board into the printer. 2 Replace the co ver screws, and then turn them clockw ise. 3 Tighten the screws firmly. Attaching cables Connect the printer to the computer using a USB cable or Ethernet cable.

Loading paper and specialty media This section explains ho w to load th e 520-, 867-, and 1 133 -sheet trays, and the multipurpose feeder. It also includes information ab out paper orientation, se tting the Paper Size and Paper Type, and linking and unlinking trays.

Loading the 520-sheet trays The Size Sens ing setting is only ava ilable for A5- and statement-size paper. Loading the 52 0-sheet trays The printer has a stan dard 520-shee t tray (Tray 1), and it may have one or more optional 52 0-sheet trays. All 520-sheet trays support the same pa per sizes and types.
3 Squeeze the length g uide tab inward as sh own, and sli de the guide to the correct position for the pa per size being loaded. Note: Use the size indicators on the bottom of the tray to help position the guides. 4 Flex the sheets back and forth to loosen them, and then fan them.
7 Align the tray, and insert it. 8 If a different type of pa per was loaded than the type previ ously loaded in the tray, change the Paper Type setting for the tray fro m the control panel.
Loading the 867- and 1133-sheet trays Although the 867-sheet tray and the 1 133 -sheet tra y are different in appearance, they suppo rt the same paper sizes and types and require th e same process for loading paper. Use these instructions to load p aper in either tray: 1 Grasp the han dle, and op en the tray.
4 Load the paper stack with the re commended print side fa ceup. 5 Make sure the pape r guides are secure aga inst the edges of the pa per. 6 Insert the tray into the printer. 7 If a different type of pa per was loaded than the type previ ously loaded in the tray, change the Paper Type setting for the tray fro m the control panel.
1 Pull the multipurpose feeder tray down. 2 Grasp the exte nsion, and g ently pull it out until it is fully extended. 3 Prepare the paper for loadin g. • Flex sheets of paper back and forth to loos en them, a nd then fan them. Do n ot fold or crease the pa per.
4 Load the pape r, and then ad just the paper guid es so that they lightly touch the edg es of the paper sta ck. • Load letter, A4, and transpare ncies with the reco mmended print si de facedown and the long edge of the paper entering the printer first.
Linking and unlinking trays Linking trays Tray linking is useful for large print jo bs o r multiple copie s. When on e linked tray is empty, paper feeds from the next linked tray. When the Paper Size and Paper Type settings are the same for any trays, the trays are automatically linked.

Paper and specialty media guide Paper guidelines Paper characteristics The following paper characteristics affect pr int quality and re liability. Consider these char acteristics when eval uating new paper stock. Weight The printer can automatica lly feed paper we ights from 60 to 220 g/m 2 (16 to 58 lb bond) grain long .
Unacceptable paper The following pape r types are not recommen ded for use with the printe r: • Chemically treated pape rs used to make copies wi thout carbon pa per, also known as carbonless papers.
Lexmark consistently tests its printers with recycled pa per (20–100% post-consumer wa ste) and a variet y of test paper from arou nd the world, using cha mber tests for diff erent temperature and humidi ty conditions.

• Use transparencies that a re 0.12–0.14 mm (4 .8–5.4 mil) in thickn ess or 161–179 g/m 2 in weight. Print quality and durability depend on the transparencies used. • To prevent print quality problems, a void getting fingerprints on the transparencies.
• Use full label sheets. Part ial sheets may cause labels to peel off during printing, resulting in a jam. Partial sheets also contaminate the printer and the ca rtridge with a dhesive, and could vo id the printer a nd cartridge warra nties. • Do not use labels with exposed adhesive.

Note: To use a paper size that is u nlisted, config ure a Universal Pape r Size. For information on ca rd stock and labels, see th e Card Stock & Label Guide .

Printing This chapter covers printing, printe r reports, and job canc ellation. The selection and handling of paper a nd specialty media can affect how reliably documents print. For more information, see "Avoiding jams" and "Storing paper.
Job type Descrip tion Confidential When you send a Confiden tial print job to the printe r, you must crea te a PIN in Print Properties. The PIN must be fo ur digits using the nu mbers 0–9. The job is held in printer memory until you enter the PIN from the control panel and choose to print or d elete the job.

Printing from a USB flash memory device A USB Direct interface is located on the control panel. Insert a USB flash memory device to print supported f ile types. Supported file types include: .p df, .gif, .jpeg, .jpg, .bmp, .p ng, .tif f, .tif, .pcx, and .
