Introd uction 2 1.0 I NTRODUCTION 1.1 System Description The role of a UPS system is to supply uninterrupt ible, clean power to the cri tical load. The UPS main- tains a full-v oltage, low-distort ion output, even if the utility source power sags, b ecomes distorted or fails.

Theory of Operati on 9 2.0 T HEORY OF O PERATION 2.1 General Compone nt Descriptions The UPS system includes all of the equipment necessary to continuously provide computer-grade AC power to a critical load, even when there is an inte rruption of the utility powe r.
Theory of Operati on 10 2.2 Det ailed Component Descrip tions 2.2.1 Controls Hardware The Series 610 UPS Operator Interface Display System is designed to provide all of t he information that is required for the operation of each UPS module. The following is a list of the hardware features: 1.
Theory of Operati on 11 2.2.2 Rectifier/Charger The UPS module rectifier/charger consists of an in put circuit breaker, AC cu rrent limiting circuit, battery equalize charge circuit, DC filter, battery charge current limiti ng circuit and bridge rectifiers.
Theory of Operati on 12 2.2.3 Battery Charging Circuit The UPS module charging circuit is capab le of recharging the battery plant to 95% of full capacity within 10 times the discharge time . Recharging the last 5% takes lo nger because of characteristics inherent in the battery.
Theory of Operati on 13 2.2.4 Inverter The inverter is a s olid state devi ce that converts th e DC output of the rectifier/charger or the battery to AC power. Operation The inverter converts DC power—from either the battery or the rectifier/ charger—into three pulse- width-modulated/six-step waveforms.
Theory of Operati on 14 2.2.5 St atic Byp ass A static bypass is an integral part of the UPS. Th e static by pass consists of a static bypass switch, consisting o f two reverse-pa ralleled SCRs (s ilicon-contro lled rectifiers ) per phase a nd bypass power switching devices (motor-o pe rated circuit breakers).

Automatic Transfers to Bypass: Critical bus con ditions that will initiate an automatic transf er of the critical load from the UPS invert er output to the bypas s source are: a. Operation 17 3.0 O PERATION 3.1 Display Screen a nd Operator Controls Each Liebert Series 610 UPS is equi pped with a microprocessor-based Operator Control Pa nel and Display Screen d esigned for conv enient and reli able operation. The locations of ope rator controls are shown in Figures 3 and 4 .

Operation 20 3.2 Menu T ree Navigation The Operator Interface Display is a blue-backg round display with white text. The display is alwa ys on, but the backli ght will remain l it for 15 minut es followin g any display act ivation. After 1 5 minutes, the backlight will go out and the display may ap pear very dim.
Operation 21 Figure 5 illustrates the primary screen s that you can access through the Operator Interface Display System. The liqu id crystal display (LCD) screen pro vides a full 80 characters by 25 l ines of informa- tion for easy re adability. The following section s describe wh at these screens disp lay and how and when to use them.
Operation 22 • System Configuration— This screen displays the current co nfiguratio n of the UPS system. It also enables th e operator to reset the date, ti me, dial-out phone numbers and System Options. System Options include Temperat ure-Compensated Chargi ng, Customer Alarm Definitions, Auto Restart and Battery Load Test.
Operation 23 3.2.2 Monitor/Mimic Display Screen From Master Menu move the hi ghlighted cursor to MONITOR/MIMIC DISPLAY. Press the Select pad and the Monitor/Mimic screen is displayed. Operation 24 St atus/Alarm Message Areas The status/alarm message areas display vital informati on about the operation of the UPS system. During normal operation no alarm messages should be present. Change s in the status of the system and possible alarm conditions can be monitored.

Operation 26 3.2.3 W alk-In Display Screen From the Master Menu, highlight WA LK-IN DISPLAY and then press the Select pad. The Walk-In Display screen enables the operator to monitor the UPS module DC bus voltage, the input currents and the output volt age.
Operation 27 3.2.4 St atus Report s Screens Go to the Master Menu an d move the hi ghlighted c ursor to ST ATUS REPORTS. Press the Select but- ton and the Status Reports screen is displayed. The Status Report screen is divided into fo ur submenu reports: PRESENT STATUS, EVENT HIS- TORY, HISTORY STATUS and SYSTEM STATUS.
Operation 28 Present St atus The Present Status screen shows the current status of the UPS module. This screen displays any alarm messages th at are present and th e values of th e metered parame ters for each cabinet. Each update seq uence (every 4 m illiseconds) i s called a frame.
Operation 29 History St atus The History Status screen displ ays 64 frames, of 4 milliseconds each, from th e Present Status screen. Note that the va lues for output volts and amps are updated on ce each millisecon d. Alarms are listed in the sequence they occurred, with in 1 millisecond resolution.
Operation 30 System St atus The System Status scre en displays the modu le Total Opera ting Hours, Enab le Backlight and th e Bat- tery Cycle Monitor. Battery Cycle Monitor Selecting the Battery Cycle Monitor gives you access to detailed inf o rmation about the module’s most recent battery discharge ev ents.
Operation 31 The Summary screen ( Figure 18 ) s hows Total Number of Discha rge Cycles, Accumulated Battery Time, Accumulated Battery Amp Hours, Accumulated Battery Kilowatt Hours and Battery Tempera- ture. During a battery discharge event, the screen changes to show information about the present dis- charge cycle.
Operation 32 3.2.5 System Configuration Screens Go to the Master Me nu and move the highlighted cursor to SY STEM CONFIGURATION. Pre ss the Select pad and th e System Configuration screen is displa yed. The System Configuration screen lists parameters th at can be changed to adjust your UPS module to your site requirements.
Operation 33 Maximum Auto-Retransfer Attempt s When a UPS output overload condition exceeds a pre-program med current-versus-time window, the UPS automatically transfers the crit ical load to the bypass li ne.
Operation 34 Date This is the system’s real-time da te setting. To reset th e date, do the following: 1. From the System Con figuration screen, pre ss the Up or Down pad to move t he highlighted cursor to DATE . 2. Press the Select pad. The Date screen will appear.
Operation 35 Tim e This is the system’s real-time clo ck. To reset the time do the following: 1. From the System Con figuration screen, pre ss the Up or Down pad to move t he highlighted cursor to Time. 2. Press the Select pad. The Time screen will appear.
Operation 36 Auto Dial This is a feature that automa tically dials (through a customer sup plied PC-compatible modem) a pre- programmed telephone numb er (up to 12 digits) when specified alarm condit ions occur within the UPS system. Automatic dial attempts to the first nu mber are made at periodic intervals for 30 min- utes.
Operation 37 Language Selection English and Portuguese are supported. System Options This screen enable s and disables optio nal features whi ch might or might not be installed in you r UPS. The options are Customer Alarm Inte rface, Batte ry Exercise, Temperatur e-Compensated Battery Charging, Automatic Restart and Co ntinuous Duty Static Switch.

Operation 39 Remote Monitor The Remote Monitor Pa nel (optional) displays eigh t (8) alarms. These alarms are also available for customer use through a set of contac ts on a separate terminal board. The following alarms, as well as those listed above, will activate the System Summary Alarm.
Operation 40 3.2.6 Alarm Limit Settings Screen Go to the Master Me nu and move the highlighted cursor to LIMI T SET TINGS. Press the Select pad and the Limit Settings screen is displayed.
Operation 41 Battery Shut down (60 Minutes) During extended outages or d ee p sa g s o f m or e t ha n 15 minutes, the shutdown voltage limit will ramp up gradually to this 60-minute li mit to prevent lengthy discharg e and possible battery damage.
Operation 42 3.2.7 Load T ransfer Procedures Screen Go to the Master Menu and move the highlight ed cursor to LO AD TRANSFER PROCEDURES. Press the Select pad and the Load Tra nsfer Procedures screen is displayed.
Operation 43 3.2.8 St art-Up Procedures Screen From the Master Menu, move the highlighted cursor to START-UP PROCEDURES. Press the Select pad and the Start-Up Procedures screen is displayed. This two-page screen contains the steps you must fo llow to start-up the UPS system.
Operation 44 3.2.9 Shut down Procedures Screen Go to the Master Menu and move the cursor to SHUTDOWN PR OCEDURE S . Press the Select pad and the Shutdown Procedures scre en is displayed. This two-page screen contains the steps you must follow to perform a controlled s hutdown of the UPS system.
Operation 45 Figure 35 Battery time screen (15-minu te discharge) The screen also disp lays alarm messages (Battery Disc harging, L ow Battery Warning and Battery Shutdown) and a set of five pa ra meters that inform the operator of battery condition and time remaining.
Operation 46 The Battery Time Remaining graph an d the Calculated times are extrem ely helpful to the operator who has the discretionary authority to order load-shedding activities. The Series 610 automatically samples battery voltage and load cu rrent and recomputes ever y six seconds.
Operation 47 If the Battery Time screen is disp layed while the battery i s not discharging, it will d i splay the present Battery Charge percentage and the result s of the previous discharge event. The Series 610 records information about each discharge event.
Operation 48 3.2.12 Battery Equ alize Screen Go to the Master Menu and move the highlighted cursor to BATT ERY EQUALIZE . Press the Select pad and the Battery Equali ze screen is displayed. Operation 49 3.2.13 Alarm a nd St atus Messages St atus Messages The status messages indicate whet her the static bypass switch is co nnect ed or disconnected . The sta- tus messages also advise th e operator when a transfer or retran sfer between the UPS and bypass line is permitted, based on matching voltage, freq uency and phase.
Operation 50 Alarm Messages The alarm message area displays the ala rm condit ions that are present within the UPS system. Alarm messages are displayed i n flashing reverse vi deo. During normal operation no alarm messages should be present. Up to four messages are displayed.

Operation 55 3.2.14 Communication Interfaces Your Liebert Series 610 UPS can be configur ed with the followin g communication ports: • Worldwide reporting to a remo te terminal through a modem • R.
Operation 56 Requesting Information If your Series 610 is equi pped with a modem and te lephone line, you can call the UPS and receive sys- tem status and historical information on discharge ev ents. You can place the call from either a remote terminal or a personal computer with a communications program.
Operation 57 Remote Monitor Panel The Liebert Remote Monitor Panel provides an LED indication of the followin g conditions: • Load On UPS • Load On Bypass • Battery Discharge • Low Battery War.
Operation 58 3.3 Modes of Operation This section illustrates the flow of power through circuit breakers, switches and UPS components dur- ing various modes of operation. The same modes of operation apply to all configurations of the Liebert Series 610 UPS.
Operation 59 3.3.2 OK to T ransfer The OK to Transfer st atus message will b e displa yed when the bypass line and UPS output power are both available, their voltag e, frequency and phase synchroniza tion are matched within specifications, and the Static Switch Disconnects are closed (ON) .

Operation 61 3.3.3 Moment ary Overloads An overload in the critical load will continue to be supplied by the UPS module i f the overload condi- tion does not exceed the current versus time curve. The overload cur ve includ es 150% of rated current for 30 seconds, 125% for 10 minutes and 104% continuously.
Operation 62 3.3.4 Input Power Failure—Load on Battery If the utility AC p ower source fails o r is outside the acceptable range, the battery plant becomes the power source for the UPS mo dule inverter s. The UPS system continues to supp ly power to the critical load and al so to the UPS con trols.
Operation 63 3.3.5 Off Battery The battery plant can be disconnected from the UPS, if required for battery maintenance, by opening the module battery disconnect (MBD ) circuit br eaker.
Operation 64 3.3.6 Emergency Module Off The Local Emergency Modu le Off (LEMO) mode is us ed to remove power from nearly all UPS module components, and the critical load will continue to be supplied through the bypass line. The Emergency Module Off control is a guarded pa d on the UPS Control Panel ( Figure 4 ).
Operation 65 3.3.7 Remote Emergency Power Off The Remote Emergency Power Of f (REPO) mode is us ed to remove all power from the critical load. The Remote Emergency Power Off control is a us er -provided switch located remotely from the UPS system. It will normally be in the sa me room as the critical load eq uipment.
Operation 66 3.3.8 Module Shut down Perform a Module Shutdown procedure when you mu st disconnect the UPS system components from all power sources when required for maintenance procedures. Use the Shutdown Proce dures screen when per forming a manual System Shut down.
Operation 67 3.3.9 Maintenance Byp ass Maintenance Bypass swi tchgear allo ws you to totally isolate the UPS from all power sources, while you maintain power to the critical load. Your installation may have a two-breaker or three- breaker maintenance bypass or none at all.

Operation 69 3.4 Manual Procedures The Liebert Series 610 UPS is desi gned to function while una ttended by an operator. Many important functions are handled automaticall y by the system control logic, as explained in 3.5 - Automatic Operations . Other procedures must be performed manuall y.
Operation 70 STEP 1 (St art-Up Procedure) Before you apply power to the UPS m odules, determin e the position of the fo llowing circuit breakers and switches: a. Rectifier Input Breaker (RIB) - If this external circuit brea ker is closed, you already have power to the UPS cabinet and possib ly power to the controls.
Operation 71 STEP 3 (St art-Up Procedure) During a start-up procedure, power is supplied to t he critical load through the internal bypass line while the UP S module is be ing energized. Depending on th e reason for yo ur UPS mod ule shutdown, you may already have power through the bypass line .
Operation 72 STEP 4 (St art-Up Procedure) a. Press the Select pad to put the Master Menu on the LC D. Move the high lighted cursor to Start-Up Procedures (use the Up an d Down pads). Press the Select pad to display the S tart- Up Procedures screen ( Figure 52 ).
Operation 73 STEP 5 (St art-Up Procedure) When the Module DC Bus voltage is at 100%, you can manually close the module bat tery disconnect (MBD) circuit breaker (external to the UPS). The Battery block in the Monitor/Mimic Display indicates the batte ry voltage and charge current.
Operation 74 3.4.2 Load T ransfer Procedures Use the Monitor/Mimic Display to determine the o perating conditio n of the UPS module. Press the Alarm Reset pad to clear the Alar m Messages. Refer to Table 4 for an expl anation of a ny remaining alarm messages (except Load On Bypass).
Operation 75 3.4.3 Maintenance Byp ass Load T ransfers To manually transfer the load between Maintenance Bypass an d the UPS bypass line, carefully foll ow these instructions. Do not transfer the load between Maintenance Bypass and the UPS modul e (inverter) output.
Operation 76 3.4.4 Shut down Procedures Module Shut down Procedure Perform a Module Shutdown Procedure when you wa nt to remove power from a UPS module when required for maintenance. Before performing an y maintenance on your Liebert Series 610 UPS, observe ALL of the WARNINGS in 4.
Operation 77 STEP 3 (Shut down Procedures) Manually open the UPS input ci rcuit breaker by moving the ha ndle to the OFF position ( Figure 3 ). Return to the Monitor/Mimic Di splay to verify status of the circuit breakers. Press the Alarm Reset pad to clear alarm messages.
Operation 78 3.4.5 Battery Exercise Procedure s Once this option has been enable d on the Syste m Options Screen, it appears on the Master Menu. To initiate a battery testing sessi on, do the following: 1. From the Master Menu, use the Up or Down pads to highlight Battery Exercise .
Operation 79 3.5 Automatic Operations The Liebert Series 610 UPS system is desi gned to functi on while unattende d by an operator. The sys- tem control logic monitors the perf ormance of the UPS, the availabili ty of power sources and the cur- rent required by the critical load.
Operation 80 3.5.2 Automatic T ransfers to Byp ass (Overload Condition) The UPS system wi ll initiate an automatic load transf er to the bypass lin e if an overlo ad condition exceeds the current-versus-ti me curve of overload capacity or if specified UPS system faults occur.
Operation 81 3.5.4 Automatic T ransfers to Bypas s (UPS System Fault s) For specified UPS system faults, the control logic will initiate an automat ic transfer to bypass fol- lowed immediately by a shutdown and isolation of the UPS system. The output, battery (MBD) and input circuit breakers are open.
Operation 82 3.5.5 Automatic Rest art (Optional) Starting and restarti ng the Series 610 is normal ly a manual procedure. However, for some unat - tended sites, it is desirable to en able the module to restart i tself and retransfer the l oad back to UPS power following an extended utility outag e.
Maintenance 83 4.0 M AINTENANCE 4.1 Safety Precautions Observe the safety precautions in Important Safety Instructions on page 1 and in 1.3 - Safety Precautions .
Maintenance 84 4.2 Liebert Global Services Start-up, UPS maintenance, batte ry mainten ance and training programs are avai lable for the Series 610 UPS through your L iebert sales representative.
Maintenance 85 4.3 Routine Maintenance You are encouraged to become thoroughly familiar wi th the equipment, but at no time should you go beyond the specific procedures in this manual wh ile performing maintenanc e or correcting a malfunc- tion.
Maintenance 86 4.3.3 Limited Life Component s Your Liebert UPS has a design life well in excess of 10 years. Well-main taine d units can continue to provide e conomic benef its for 20 years or more. Lo ng-life components are used in your UPS wherever practical and cost-effectiv e.
Maintenance 87 4.4 Battery Maintenance 4.4.1 Battery Safety Precautions Servicing of batteries should be performed or supe rvised by personnel know ledgeable of batteries and the required precautions. Keep unauthorized person nel away from batteries. When replacing batteries, use the sa me number and type of batteries.

Maintenance 89 Regular maintenance of the battery module is an absolute necessity. Periodic inspections of battery and terminal voltages, specific gravity and connection resistance should be made. Strictl y follow the procedures outlined in the batt ery manufacturer’s manual, availa ble on the manufacturer’s Web site.
Maintenance 90 If you have a different model battery, contact Liebert Global Services for th e required torqu e value. To access battery cell te rminals, disconnect the inter-tier cable and two shelf retaining screws. Once disconnected, insula te (with protecti ve boot or ele ctrical tape) the c ables to prevent accid ental shorts.
Maintenance 91 4.4.2 T orque Requirement s All electrical connectio ns must be tight. Table 10 provides the torque values for the connections in the UPS.
Maintenance 92 4.6 Reporting a Problem If a problem occurs within the UP S, review all alarm messages along with other pertinent data.
