1 I MPORT ANT S AFETY I NSTRUCTIONS Save these instructions This manual co ntains importan t instructions tha t should be followed during the ins tallation an d maintenance of the Liebert St atic Transfer Swi tch 2 (STS2). ! WARNING The unit is supplied by more than one power source.
2 O VERVIEW OF M ANUAL The STS2 Installation, Op eration and Maintenance Manual is organized in a log ical progression so that you can follow the procedures, in the order provided to get your STS2 in stalled and running. Read the entire manual before proceeding w ith the unpacking and installation of the STS2.
Safety Precautions 3 1.0 S AFETY P RECAUTION S Read this manual thoroughly before working with the static transfer switch. Be sure to review the warning under Important Safet y Instructions on page 1 . Refer to the Handling Considerations on page 5 before attempting to move the unit.
Unpacking and Inspection s 4 2.0 U NP ACKING AND I NSPECTIONS A high-quality installation begi ns on the recei ving dock. The STS2 and its pa ckaging shou ld be inspected when the unit is delive red. If the packaging is not da maged, unp ack the unit and conduct an internal inspect ion before beginning the installa tion process.
Unpacking and Inspection s 5 2.2.1 Handling Considerations The static switch is bolted to a wooden shipping pall et to allow handling by forklift equipmen t or a pallet jack. Easily Moved — The unit is furnished with integra l castors that allow the unit to be rolled into place after it has reached its location and is removed from the pall et.
Location Cons iderations 6 3.0 L OCATION C ONSIDERATIONS The STS2 should be placed in a cl ean, cool and dry location. The STS2 requires only front access for installation and maintenance. Back or side access is not required. Adequate space is required above the unit for conduit (if configured as such) and cool ing air flow.
Location Cons iderations 7 3.4 Altitude The standard units are designed for full load operatio n up to 4000 feet (120 0 m) above sea level. See Figure 1 for recommended deratings for altitude s greater than 4000 feet ( 1200 m).
Locating the STS2 8 4.0 L OCATING THE STS2 This section provides instru ctions for leveling the STS2 an d anchoring the unit to the floor, sho uld that be required.
Power and Con trol Wiring 9 5.0 P OWER AND C ONTROL W IRING All power and control wiring should be installed by a qualif ied electrician. All power and con trol wir- ing must comply with the NEC and appli cable loca l codes. Unless otherwise labeled, use the recom- mended tightening to rque as shown in Table 25 - Torque tightening.
Power and Con trol Wiring 10 The input and output po wer wire size shoul d be ba sed on the upstream overcu rrent protection device, observing the NEC and local codes. The molded case switches containe d in the STS2 are typically non- automatic circuit breakers that rely on the upstream and/or load overcurrent protection.
Power and Con trol Wiring 11 5.3 System Grounding Equipment grounding — Grounding i s primarily f or equipment an d personnel sa fety, although proper g rounding also e nhanc es equipment performance. All input and o utput powe r feeds must inclu de an equipme nt grounding m eans as requir ed by the NEC and local codes.
Power and Con trol Wiring 12 5.5 Remote Source Selection Wiring An optional Remote Source Selectio n board may be installed in your STS2. Thi s board is installed in the same bay as the commu nications options. See Figures 21 and 22 for the location of these options.
Options 13 6.0 O PTIONS This section discusses th e options available for th e STS2. The co mmunication s options are also di s- cussed in 12.0 - Communication Interfaces . 6.1 Programmable Relay Board The Programmable Relay Board (PRB) provides a means to trigger an extern al device when an event occurs in the STS2.
Options 14 6.3 Distribution Cabinet With I-Li ne Panelboard—100-600A Unit s Only A distribution cabin et with a Square D I-Line panelbo ard offers space to plug in up to 10 three-pole branch circuit breakers (100A-250A). The panel board is rated at 600A with an overall short-circuit rating of 100,000 AIC.
Options 15 6.7 Network Interface Card (NIC) An OpenComms Network Interface Card (NIC) enab les the STS2 to communicate to a network man- agement system (NMS). The NIC provides the inte rnal hardware and softwa re to communicate, via SNMP, to any I.P.-based Ethernet network throug h an RJ-45 connector using Category 5 cabling.
Options 16 6.12 Input Junction Boxes and Cables Two input power junction boxes and interconnecting cables provide under floo r connection for the two input power feeds. Power terminal blocks are provid ed in each junction box for the connection of the input power conductors and a parity-sized ground conductor.
