System Description 1 1.0 S YSTEM D ESCRIPTION 1.1 Function The Liebert Continuous Po wer-Tie™ system provides the capability to momentarily or continuously parallel the output buses of two otherwise inde pendent UPS Systems (See Figure 1 ).
System Description 2 Figure 1 Basic Dual-Bus Power- Tie one- line diagram.
System Description 3 Figure 2 Power-Tie sy stems - fault isolation issues.
System Description 4 Figure 3 Power-Tie sy stems - control interface diagram.
System Description 5 1.4 Control System Features A key control feature necessary for successful momentary or continuous tie operation of two UPSs is the dynamic load current sharing function.
System Description 6 1.5.2 Moment ary Tie Operatio n See Figure 3 . Momentary Tie operation provides manually initiated, uni nterrupted transfers of a critical lo ad bus between two otherwise independent multi-module UP S s ystems.
System Description 7 The Tie Control Unit also contains interl ock and mo nitoring circuitry necessar y to assure successful transfers of load between UPS systems. These consist of the following : 1. Sync Verification circuit ry, similar to the circuitry employed in each UPS, provides the sync check function in two independent modes: a.
System Description 8 Synchronizing activity takes place automatically once the preferred sour ce is chosen and a manually initiated “SYNCH RONIZE SYSTEMS” signal is given. Visual indicators show that the systems are synchronizin g and when the sys tems are ready for the ma nually initiated, automatical ly controlled paralleling sequence.
System Description 9 1.5.5 Modes of Operation See Figure 4 . The Power-Tie Uninterruptible Po wer System is designed to operate in the following modes: 1. Normal - Each load bus is fe d from its respective UPS and the tie breaker is open. E ach inverter is synchronized to its respective bypass sou rce.
System Description 10 Figure 4 Power-Tie sy stem one-line diagram.
Operation Description 11 2.0 O PERATION D ESCRIPTION There are two types of ope rations which can be performed with the Li ebert Continuous Power- Tie System. • Create a continuous tie between th e critical buses of two UPS systems • Transfer of a critical load between two UPS systems 2.
Operation Description 12 Figure 5 Control p anel layout.
Operation Description 13 2.2 Sep arating T ied Systems The following sequence of operations describes th e actions taken to separa te two tied UPS systems. Synchronize Systems From the CONTINUOUS TIE CONTROL section, press the SYNCHRONIZE SYSTEMS button.
Operation Description 14 2.4 Combined Loads on One System from Continuous T ie Operation To combine two loads onto o ne system, pe rform a LOAD TRANSFER BETWEEN UPS SYSTEMS ( 2.3 - Load Transfers Between UPS Systems ). The operator selects the system he wants to main- tain both loads using the TRANSFER LOAD TO buttons.
Operation Description 15 Line Sync Signal The Line Sync signal is sent betw een UPS systems when they are in parallel. Isolatio n amplifiers iso- la te the Li ne Sy nc s ig na l le ve ls between the two systems. The Line Sync signal synchronizes the UPS systems to the Primary Bypass line.
Operation Description 16 Figure 6 Power-Tie sy stem - fault isolation issues.
Operation Description 17 Figure 7 Power-Tie sy stems - fault tolerance.
Operation Description 18 2.7 Improper User Operation See Figures 4 and 5 . The Power-Tie Operator controls and logi c are designed so that improper opera- tor use does not directly cause a lo ss of critical bus function s. Additional security functions, such as removable key switches, are availa ble as system options.
Operation Description 19 2.8 T ie Circuit Breaker or Logic Fault s The Continuous Power-Tie system ha s been designed to anticipate circuit breaker and logic faults. Should a circuit breaker or logic fault occur, the Power-Tie system maintains the critical bus function under fault conditions 2.
Control Panel Desc ription 20 3.0 C ONTROL P ANEL D ESCRIPTION Refer to Figure 5 . 3.1 Mimic Panel The Mimic panel consists of the following: • UPS SYSTEM 1 - PRIMARY BYPASS • UPS SYSTEM 2 - PRlMA.
Control Panel Desc ription 21 Tie Circuit Breaker These two lights indicate the OPEN (Red light) or C LOSED (Green l ight) state of the Tie ci rcuit breaker. Load 1 - Normal This light indicat es that Load 1 is being supplied b y UPS System 1. Load 1 supplied by UPS system 1 represents the normal operating mode.
Control Panel Desc ription 22 OK to T ransfer Load 2 to System 2 This light indicates th at it is safe to transfer Load 2 from UPS System 1 to UPS System 2. The trans- fer occurs when the PUSH TO TRAN SFER AFTER OK button is pressed, b ut only if this light i s on.
Control Panel Desc ription 23 3.3 Continuous T ie Control This section of the control panel provides indicato rs and controls for the control of tied systems functions. OK to Tie Systems This light indicates that it is safe to tie UPS Sy stems 1 and 2 together.
Control Panel Desc ription 24 V oltage Lockout This light indicates the sys tem voltages are too far apart to allow safe transfers and parallel operation of the UPS systems.
Operating In structions 25 4.0 O PERATING I NSTRUCTIONS Refer to Figure 5 . 4.1 Initial System St art-Up All load circuit breakers and tie ci rcuit breakers are initially open. 1. Press the CLOSE LOAD 1 button located on th e panel behind the Cont rol door.
Operating In structions 26 4.2.4 Isolating a UPS System for Maintenance - Combin ed Loads Operation Both Load circuit breakers are in itially closed and the Tie circuit breaker initially open. The Tie cir- cuit breaker is closed if the UPS systems are cu rrently in parallel operatio n.
Operating In structions 27 4.2.6 Returning an Isolated System to Normal Operation - End Combined Loads Operation One Load circuit breaker and the Ti e circuit breaker are closed. The Load circuit breaker of the iso- lated system which was be ing serviced will be opened.
Operating In structions 28 4.2.9 Abnormal Operations Improper Transfer Transfers can not be performed unless the OK TO TRANSFER LOAD (#) TO SYSTEM (#) light turns on. This makes it difficult to begin an improper transfer. The source feeding the UPS module s does not matter because the UPS inverter output is isolated from the rectifier.
Operating In structions 29 4.2.1 1 Continuous T ie-Systems A UPS system that has lost one or more modules ca n be taken off-line for service. The UPS system with partial capacity can be contin uously .
Operating In structions 30 Maintenance Procedures - T ie Control Logic and Power Component s Refer to the procedures in 4.2.3 - M aintenance Procedures - Isol ating Each UPS System to iso- late the UPS’s load circuit breaker and the associated downstream fe eders for service.
Operating In structions 31 T rouble Recovery While failures are extremely unlikely, this system ha s been de signed to allow restart from any system configuration once the fa ult has been corrected. Refer to 1.5.5 - Modes of Operation for a descrip- tion of the operating modes.
