This chapter outlines the f eatures of the P owerBook G 4 1 7-inch computer . P ow erB ook G 4 1 7-inch F eature s Here is a list of the featur es of the P owerBook G4 1 7-inch computer . Each feature is described in a later chapter , as indicated . ● Pr ocessor The computer has a P owerPC G4 microprocessor running at a clock s peed of 1 GHz.
● CardBus slot The comput er has a CardBus slot that accepts one T ype I or T ype II PC Card or a CardBus Card . For mor e information, see “CardBus Slot” (page 57). ● USB ports The comput er has two USB 1 . 1 por ts for an external keyboard, a mouse , and other USB devices , described in “USB P orts” (page 25).

P er ipheral Device s Included with the computer are a 65 W Apple P or table P ower Adapter , an S-video-to-composite cable, and a DVI-to-VGA cable. Asset management software that reports the kind of computer it is running on can obtain the value of the model propert y from the IOSer vice plane of the IORegistry . For the P owerBook G4 1 7-inch computer , the value of the model property is PowerBook5,1.

This chapter describe s the architecture of the P owerBook G4 1 7-inch computer . I t includes information about the major components on the main logic board: the micropr ocessor , the other main ICs, and the buses that connect them to each other and to the I/O interfaces.
Main ICs and Buses The architecture of the P owerBook G 4 1 7-inch computer is designed ar ound the Po werPC G4 microprocessor and Intrepid IC that con tains the memor y controller and I/O device c ontroller . The P owerPC G4 microprocessor is connected to the Intrepid IC b y a MaxBus bus.
Le vel 2 Cache The data storage f or the L2 cache consists of 256 KB of fast static RAM that is built into the micropr ocessor chip along with the cache controller and tag st orage. The built-in L2 cache runs at the same clock speed as the microproce ssor .
Syst em RAM The memory subsystem in the P owerBook G4 1 7-inch computer suppor ts two slots for 3 33 MHz DDR (PC2700) SO-DIMMs (small-outline dual inline memory modules). The data bus to the RAM and DIMM is 64 bits wide, and the memory inter face is synchronized to the MaxBus bus interface at 1 67 MHz.

The DB-DMA system pro vides a scatter-gather proc ess based on memor y resident data structure s that describe the data transfers . The DMA engine is enhanced to allow bursting of data file s for improved performance.
The internal modem is a separa te module that contains the data pump IC and the int er face to the telephone line (DAA). F or more information about the modem, see “Internal Modem ” (page 30). Sound Circuitr y The sound circuitry , called Snapper , is connected to the Intrepid IC by a standar d IIS (inter-IC sound) bus.
T wo antennas are built into the c omputer ’ s case. T o improv e reception, a diversity module between the antennas and the card measure s the signal strength from both antennas and selects the stronger signal for AirP or t Extreme. AirP or t Extreme is based on the IEEE draft specification of the 802.
This chapter describes both the built-in I/O de vices and the por ts for connecting external I/O devices. Each of the following sections describes an I/O port or device.
The P owerBook G 4 1 7-inch computer supports all four data transfer types defined in the USB specifica tion. USB devices can pro vide a remote wakeup function for the computer . The USB root hub in the computer is set to support remote wakeup whenever a device is attached to the bus .

Booting from a F ireWire Device The P owerBook G 4 1 7-inch computer can boot from a F ireWire storage devic e that implements SBP-2 (Serial Bus Prot ocol) with the RBC (reduced block commands) command set. Detailed information is a vailable from Developer T echnical Support at dts@apple.

The connector has the dimensions of a 50-pin connector , but with one row of pins remo ved, as sho wn in F igure 3-5 (page 35).

The P owerBook G 4 1 7-inch computer has a fiber-optic backlit keyboard and ambient light sensors that con trol the brightness of the displa y and the keyboard back lighting. In lo w light, the computer automatically illuminates the backlit keyboard and lowers the dis play brightness.
F igure 3-7 (page 40) and F igure 3-8 (page 41) include duplicate versions of some keys in order t o show their alternate modes of opera tion. Using the Fn Key Pre ssing the Fn key affects three sets of keys: the function k eys F1–F1 2, the embedded numeric k eypad , and certain modifier keys. ● It toggles the function keys between their control-button opera tion and their F1–F1 0 func tions, as shown in T able 3-9 (page 42) and Figure 3-7 (page 40).

External M onitors The computer has a Digital Visual Interface (DVI) por t for connecting to flat panel displa ys, a VGA monitor , or projection devices. The DVI c onnec tor supports DVI-equipped displays and projectors. A DVI-to-VGA adapter is included for use with analog monitors .

Built-in Microphone The built-in microphone is located a t the bottom of the left speaker grill. The sound signal from the built-in microphone goe s through a dedicated preamplifier that raise s its nominal 30 mV level to a nominal 1 50 mV (peak-to-peak) signal to the sound circuitry .
Internal Speakers The computer has two in ternal speakers, one on either side of the keyboard . The computer turns off the sound signals to the speakers when an external device is actively connected to the sound output jack and during power management.

This chapter describe s the expansion features of the P owerBook G4 1 7-inch computer ’ s RAM expansion slots and the CardBus slot. RAM Expansion Slots The computer has two RAM expansion slots tha t accommodate standard SO (small outline) DIMMs using DDR SDRAM devices.
Mechanical Design of DDR RAM SO-DIMMs The RAM expansion modules used in the P owerBook G 4 1 7-inch computer are PC2 700 DDR33 3 RAM SO-DIMMs, as defined in the JEDEC specifications. The mechanical characteristics of the RAM expansion SO-DIMM are given in the JEDEC specifica tion for the DDR SO-DIMM.
DDR SDRAM Devices The DDR SDRAM devices used in the RAM expansion modules must be self-r efresh type devices for opera tion from a 2.5 V power supply . The speed of the DDR SDRAM device s must be 1 67 MHz or higher . The devices ar e programmed to operate with a CAS lat enc y of 2.
Note: The P owerBook G4 1 7-inch computer does not use memory interleaving , so installing two SO-DIMMs of the same size does not re sult in any per formance gain.
CardBus Slot The CardBus slot acc epts one T ype I or T ype II card. The slot supports both 1 6-bit PC Cards and 3 2-bit CardBus Cards. T he card can be removed and replac ed while the computer is operating . Note: The CardBus slot does not pro vide 1 2 V power .
