W elcome and congratulations on your purchase of the Magellan M eridian GPS r eceiver . The M eridian has all the features that a sailor , fisherman, hiker , hunter , or any person involved with outdoor r ecreational activities has come to expect from a Magellan GPS r eceiver .
2 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er R efer ence Guide: He re you will find step-by-step instructions for all of the features found in the M eridian. This chapter is set up in a way that y ou can quickly and easily find the feature you ar e looking for .
3 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er S etting up the M eridian is a simple two-step process: installing the batteries and initializing the M eridian. The Magellan M eridian uses two AA batteries that are installed from the back through the battery cover .
4 Magellan Meridian GPS R eceiver The Meridian will walk y ou through the process of setting up the receiv er for first time use. This procedure is commonly referred to as “I nitializing the Receiver .” The purpose of this initializaion is to provide the M eridian with a general knowledge of its appro ximate location.
5 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er St ep 2: Select Language U se the Up/D own arrows to mo ve the highlight to the language that you want the screens to be displayed in. W ith the desire language highlighted, pr ess [ENTER] . St ep 3: Accept W arnings and Begin Initialization The W arning Screen is displayed.
6 Magellan Meridian GPS R eceiver St ep 5: Enter the T ime and Date Entering Data. When entering data in the Meridian, y ou sometimes need to use the arrow keys to enter the v alues.
7 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er St ep 6: Compute First Fix The Satellite S tatus screen is displayed and the Meridian begins acquiring the data fr om the satellites.
8 Magellan Meridian GPS R eceiver Fo r many of you this will be your first introduction into using a GPS r eceiver as a navigational tool. With all of the features and functions provided with the M eridian, it may seem a bit intimidating at first. Don ’ t worry .
9 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er The display backlight can be set to one of three levels (lo w , high or off ). PWR Press and hold for 2 seconds Display backlight illuminates (low) PWR Press and hold.
10 Magellan Meridian GPS R eceiver The Meridian has nine navigation scr eens: Map screen, Compass screen, Large Data screen, two P osition screens, R oad screen, Data screen and Sp eedometer screen. There is also Sat S tatus screen which enables you to view how well the M eridian is receiving satellite information.
11 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er M ap Scr een The Map screen has two modes, position or cursor . In the position mode, your pr esent position is indicated by the large arro w icon in the center of the display . If you are mo ving, the arrow will point in the direction that you ar e heading.
12 Magellan Meridian GPS R eceiver Po sition Screens. The P osition screens 1 and 2 display your present position using the coor dinate systems that you have selected in Setup . This screen sho ws all of the basic position, time and satellite information.
13 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er The NA V key and the ESC key are used to step through the various navigation screens. If you ar e viewing one of the NA V screens, pr essing NA V will take you to the next NA V screen in the list and pressing ESC will take you to the previous NA V screen.
14 Magellan Meridian GPS R eceiver from a list of waypoints named WPT001, WPT002, etc. F or that r eason, you may want to change the default name to one of y our choosing. Y ou can also select a different icon that will help you find the waypoint when you are using the map scr een.
15 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er When you have the name the way you want it, highlight “OK” and press [ENTER] . Y ou are returned to the Mark scr een with the new name displayed. A dding a M essage to a W aypoint Y ou can also add a message to waypoints you are cr eating.
16 Magellan Meridian GPS R eceiver A GO TO r oute is simply a route with a start point (your present position) and a single destination point (a waypoint you select). All that is r equired to create a GO T O route is having the destination waypoint saved in memory .
17 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er St ep 3: Select Find B y . There are two options of “F ind By ”: Alphabetical and Near est T o. S electing Alphabetical will display all the waypoints in the category y ou select in alphabetic order .
18 Magellan Meridian GPS R eceiver (If you have been performing the keypresses as y ou are reading this, then you are probably viewing one of the NA V screens.
19 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Fo r this example, you would highlight Los Angeles, CA and press [ENTER]. The last viewed NA V screen is displayed and the M eridian will begin computing all of the necessary information needed to get you to your destination.
20 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Reference Tu r n t he Meridian On — A pplies power to the M eridian and displays last NA V screen viewed. During po wer-up the first screen shows the software and map database versions curr ently loaded in the Meridian.

31 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Reference Also, you must be zoomed in to a scale of 0.80 miles or closer for the horizontal profile to be displayed. 50 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Re f e re n c e S earching for a S treet Addr ess — This option allows you to search an uploaded map database for a specific street addr ess. After finding the address, you can sav e it as a waypoint (“Mark ”) or view it on the Map Screen.
51 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Re f e r ence Creating a GO T O Route — Cr eates and sets as the active route a 1-leg r oute with your pr esent position as the starting point and a destination waypoint that you choose from the waypoint database.
52 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Re f e re n c e Creating a M ultileg Route — Pr ov ides the means to create a multileg r oute that can be stored in memory . Mu ltileg routes are easily the most complicated function in the M eridian, but once y ou can visualize what a multileg route (route) is, it becomes very easy to understand and create.

58 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Re f e re n c e Tr ack History Description — This option displays the vertical profile of the track that is stored in the M eridian. If you have clear ed your track, either with the Clear T rack option or clearing memory , T rack H istory cannot be accessed.
59 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Re f e r ence In itializing the Meridian — E nables you to initialize the M eridian should it be needed to speed up satellite acquisition. T wo such instances would be travelling ov er 500 miles with your Meridian turned off or complete loss of memory .
60 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Re f e re n c e Se lecting the Coordinate S ystem — Allows you to set the coordinate system that will be used to display the position for the primary or secondary position screen. A vailable coordinate systems are: Lat/Lon, UTM, OSGB, Irish, S wiss, Sw edish, Finnish, G erman, Fr ench, USNG, MGRS, or U ser Grid.
61 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Re f e r ence Sele cting the Elev ation Mode — Allows y ou to select the elevation mode used by the M eridian. Y ou may choose between 3D (uses satellite information to compute elevation) or 2D (displays a fix ed elevation based upon the elevation entered).

63 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Re f e r ence Po w er Off T imer — Conserving batter y life is important to any GPS user and the power off timer pr ovides another tool in saving battery life. S electing “On ” will allow you to select the mode and ho w long the Meridian will stay po wered on.
64 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Re f e re n c e Tu rn ing the Beeper On/Off — Allows you to select which actions will cause the beeper to sound. Y ou can choose from Off, K eys Only (pressing a key causes a beep), Alarms Only (when an alarm is activ ated) or Keys & Alarms.
65 Magellan Meridian GPS Receiv er Re f e r ence Changing the P ower Key S ettings — Allows you to choose from “N o protection ” (normal) or “On/Off P rotected” (alternate). This will change how the [PWR] operates in turning the M eridian on or off.
