The front seats contain air bag components essential to the supplemental restrain t system.
Black plate (17,1) q Seat Recline WARNING Do not drive with either front seat reclined: Sitting in a reclined position while the vehicle is moving is dangerous because you do not get the full protection from sea t belts. Du ring sudden braking or a collisi on, you can slide under the lap belt and suffer serious inte rnal injuries.
Black plate (18,1) CAUTION When returning a rear-reclined seatback to its upright position, make sure you hold on to the seatback with you r other hand whi le operating the lever. If the seatback is not supported, it will flip forward suddenly and could cause injury.

Children who find th eir way into the trunk through an unlocked rear seatbac k or an open trunk can become accide ntally locked in the trunk.
Black plate (23,1) T o return the seatbacks to the upright position 1. Position the outboard seat belts to the side. 2. Lift the seatbacks upright. 3. Make sure the seat belts are fully pulled out from under the seatbacks. 4. Pull on the top of the seatbacks from inside the vehicle to make sure they are locked.
Black plate (24,1) q Rear Seatback Lock (4 Door) T o lock or unlock a seatback, move the lever . NOTE The seatback locks ar e part of the trunk security system (page 3-16). q Armrest The rear armrest in the center of the rear seatback can be used (no occupant in the center seat) or placed upright.
Black plate (25,1) Rear seat Removal/Installation T o remove the head restraint, pull it up while pressing the stop-catch . T o install the head restraint, press the uprights into the holes while pressing the stop-catch.
Black plate (26,1) WARNING Ø Be careful when using the seat warmer. The heat from the seat warmer may be too ho t for some people, as indicated below, and could cause a low-t emperature burn.
Black plate (27,1) Seat Belt Precautions Seat belts help to d ecrease the possibility of severe injury durin g accidents and sudden stops. Mazda recommends that the driver and all passengers always wear seat belts. All of the seat belt retr actors are designed to keep the lap/shoulder belts out of the way when not in use.
Black plate (28,1) WARNING Always wear your seat belt and ma ke sure all occupants are pro perly restrained: Not wearing a seat belt is extremely danger ous. During a collision, occupants not wearing seat belts could hit someone or things ins ide the vehicle or even be thrown out of the vehicle.
Black plate (29,1) CAUTION Belt retraction may become diffic ult if the belts and rings are soiled, so try to keep them clean. For more details about cleaning the seat belts, refer to “ Cleaning the Lap/Shoulder Belt Webbing ” (page 8-64).
Black plate (30,1) q Automatic Locking Mode Always use the automatic locking mode to keep the child-restraint system from shif ting to an unsafe position in the event of an acciden t. T o enable seat belt automatic locking mode, pull it all the way out and connect it as instruct ed on the child-restrai nt system.

Black plate (32,1) q Unfastening the Seat Belt Depress the button on the seat belt buckle . If the belt does not fully retract, pull it out and check for kinks or twists. Then make sure it remains untwisted as it retracts. Button NOTE If a belt does not fully retract, inspect it for kinks and twists.
Black plate (33,1) Front Seat Belt Pretensioner and Load Limiting Systems For optimum protection, the driver and front passenger seat belts are equipped with pretensioner and load limiting systems. For both these syst ems to work properly you must wear the seat belt properly .
Black plate (34,1) Do not modify the components or wiring, or use electronic testing devices on the pretensioner system: Modifying the componen ts or wiring of the pretensioner system, including the use of electronic testing devices is dangerous.
Black plate (35,1) q Air Bag/Front Seat Belt Pretensioner System W arning Beep If a malfunction is detected in the air bag/ front seat belt prete nsioner systems and the warning light, a warning beep sound will be heard for about 5 seconds every minute.
Black plate (36,1) WARNING Fastening the Center-Re ar Seat Belt with Only One Buckle: Fastening the center-rear seat belt with only one buckle is dangerous. If only one pair of seat belt tongue and buckle, either tongue (A) and anchor buckle (B) or tongue (C) and anchor buckle (D), is fastened, the seat belt cannot provide full protecti on.
Black plate (37,1) CAUTION Always unfasten the lap portion of the belt before folding the left-rear seatback. Leaving the lap portion of the belt fastened could cause damage to the seat belt, buckle and seatback.
Black plate (38,1) Seat Belt Extender If your seat belt is not long enough, even when fully extended, a seat belt extender may be available to you at no charge from your Authorized Mazda Dealer . This extender will be only for you and for the particular vehicle and seat.
Black plate (39,1) NOTE When not in use, remove the seat belt extender and stor e it in the vehicle. If the seat belt extender is left connected, the seat belt extender might get damaged as it will not r etract with the r est of the seat belt and can easily fall out of the door when not in use and be damaged.

If the driver's seat belt is not fastened when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, the warning light/b eep operates to give you further reminders according to the chart below .
Black plate (41,1) Child Restraint Precautions Mazda strongly urges the use of child-restraint syst ems for children smal l enough to use them. Y ou are required by law to use a child-restraint system for children in the U.
Black plate (42,1) WARNING Use the correct size child-restraint system: For effective protection in vehicle accidents and sudden stop s, a child must be properly restrain ed using a seat belt or child-r estraint system dep ending on age and size. If not, the child could be seriously injured or even killed in an accident.
Black plate (43,1) Seating a child in a child -restraint system on the front passenger seat is dange rous: Vehicles equipped with front passenger seat weight senso rs are also equipped with a front passenger air bag deactivat ion indicator light (page 2-35).

A seat belt used in this way cannot spread the impact forces properly and the two passengers could be crushed together and seriously injured or even killed.

Black plate (56,1) Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS) Precautions The front and side supplemental rest raint systems (SRS) include up to 6 air bags. Y ou can locate the various air bags by the use of “ SRS AIRBAG ” location indica tors. These indicators are visible in the area where the air bags are installed.

Black plate (62,1) How the Air Bags W ork q How the Front Air Bags W ork When air bag crash sensor s detect a frontal imp act of greater than moderate force, an electrical curren t is sent to the infl ators. Gases are produced to inflate the front air bags and after the inflation, the front air bags quickly deflate.
