SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) Introduction SRS consists of: R The 6 SRS warning lamp R Air bags R Air bag control unit (with crash sensors) R Emergency Tensioning Devices R Belt force limiters SRS reduces the risk of occupants coming into contact with the vehicle's interior in the event of an accident.

G WARNING In order to reduce the potential dange ro f injuries caused during the deploymen to ft he front air bags, the driver and front passenger must always be correctly seated and wear their seat belts. For maximum protection in the event of a collision, you must always be in the normal seat position with your back against the backrest.
i After an ai rb ag has been deployed, have the vehicle towed to the neares tq ualified specialist workshop, eve ni fy our vehicle is ready to drive. Front air bags The front air bags increase protection for the driver's and front passenger's head and chest.
Driver's knee bag : deploys under the steering column. If, during a frontal collision, the syste md etermines that air bag deployment can offer additional protection to that provided by the seat belt, driver's knee bag : is deployed along with the driver's air bag.
The side impact air bag on the front- passenger side will deploy if the front- passenger seat belt is fastened, regardless of whether the front-passenger seat is occupied or not.
vehicle acceleration/deceleration. You will then be protected by the fastened seat belt. Occupant Classification System (OCS) How the Occupant Classification System works The Occupant Classification System (OCS) categorizes the occupant on the front- passenger seat using a weight sensor.
When the OCS senses that the front passenger seat occupant is classified as an adult or someone larger than a small individual, the 45 indicator lamp will illuminate for approximately six seconds when the engine is started and then go out. This indicates that the fron tp assenger front air bag is activated.
Ac hild in a rear-facing child restraint on the front-passenger seat will be seriously injured or even killed if the front-passenger front air bag inflates.
being empty, the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp will continue to light up and not go out. G WARNING If the 45 indicator lamp does not illuminate, the system is not functioning. You must contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center before seating any child on the front passenger seat.
Problems with the Occupant Classification System Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lights up and remains on. The person on the front-passenger seat: R has the weight of a typical adult R has been determined by the system not to be a child The OCS is malfunctioning.
G WARNING If the 45 indicator lamp does not illuminate or remains out with the weight of a typical 12-month-old child in a standard child restraint or less, or is unoccupied, on the front-passenger seat, do not transport ac hild on the front-passenger seat until the system has been repaired.

X Remove resetting tool : from the vehicle documen tw allet. X Slide resetting tool : into guide ; between the NECK-PRO luxury head restraint and the rear cover of the head restraint. X Push resetting tool : downwards until you hear the head restraint deployment mechanism engage.
Even where this is not required by law, all vehicle occupants should correctly fasten their seat belts before sta rting the journey. i See "Children in the vehicl e" ( Y page 59) for further information on infants and children traveling in the vehicle as well as on child restraint systems.
G WARNING Do not pass seat belts over sharp edges. They could tear. Do not allow the seat bel tt o get caught in the door or in the seat adjustment mechanism. This could damage the seat belt. Never attempt to make modifications to seat belts. This could impair the effectiveness of the seat belts.
Adjust the height so tha tt he upper part of the seat belt is routed across the center of your shoulder. X To raise: slide the belt sash guide upwards. The belt sash guide engages in various positions. X To lower: press and hold belt sash guide release : .
After the vehicle comes to a standstill, the warning tone is reactivated and the 7 seat belt warning lamp flashes agai ni ft he vehicle speed again exceeds 15 mph (25 km/h). The 7 seat belt warning lamp only goes out if: R both the driver and the front passenger have fastened their seat belts.
force exerted by the sea tb elt on the vehicle occupan ti s reduced. The seat belt force limiters for the front seats are synchronized with the front air bags, which take on a part of the deceleration force. This results in the force exerted on the occupant being distributed over a greater area.

Activating the special sea tb elt retractor: X Pull the seat belt out fully and let the seat belt retractor retract it again. While the seat belt is retracting, you should hear a ratcheting sound. The special seat belt retractor is activated. X Push down on the child rest raint system to take up any slack.
Vehicles with rear-seat through-loading facility X Install the LATCH-type (ISOFIX) child restraint system. Comply with the manufacturer's instructions when installing the LATCH-type (ISOFIX) child restraint system. Top Tether G WARNING Always lock the rear seat backrests in their upright position when the rear seats are occupied by passengers.
Child-proof locks Important safety notes G WARNING When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock. Always take the SmartKey with you and loc kt he vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, even if they are secured in a child restraint system, or with access to an unlocked vehicle.

If ABS intervenes when braking, you will feel a pulsing in the brake pedal. The pulsating brake pedal can be an indicatio no fh azardous road conditions, and functions as a reminder to take extra care while driving. BAS (Brake Assist System) General information BAS operates in emergency braking situations .
Recognition by the radar sensor system is also impaired in the event of: R dir to nt he sensors or anything else covering the sensors R interference by other radar sources R there are strong radar reflections, for example in parking garages R a narrow vehicle traveling in front, e.
Important safety notes i Observe the "Importan ts afety notes" sectio n( Y page 65). G WARNING If ESP ® is malfunctioning, ESP ® is unable to stabilize the vehicle. Additionally, further driving safety systems are deactivated. This increases the risk of skidding and an accident.
It may be best to deactivate ESP ® in the following situations: R when using snow chains R in deep snow R on sand or gravel i Activate ESP ® as soon as the situations described above no longer apply. ESP ® will otherwise not be able to stabilize the vehicle if the vehicle starts to skid or a wheel starts to spin.
Deactivating/activating ESP ® X To activate SPORT handling mode: briefly press button : . The M SPORT handling mode warning lamp in the instrumen tc luster lights up. The SPORT handling mode message appears in the multifunction display. X To deactivate SPORT handling mode: briefly press button : .
G WARNING If EBD has malfunctioned, the rear wheels can still lock, e.g. under full braking. This increases the risk of skidding and an accident. You should therefore adapt you rd riving style to the different handling chara cteristics. Have the brake system checked at a qualifi ed specialist workshop.
In the event of snowfall or heavy rain, the recognition can be impaired. Recognitio nb y the rada rs ensor system is also impaired in the event of: R dirt on the sensors or anything else covering the .
X To activate with the SmartKey: remove the SmartKey from the igniti on lock. X To activate with KEYLESS-GO: switch the ignition off and open the driver's door. X To deactivate: switch on the ignition. i The immobilize ri s always deactivated when you start the engine.

: & To lock the vehicle ; F To unlock the trunk lid = % To unlock the vehicle The turn signals flash once when unlocking and three times when locking. When it is dark, the surround lighting also comes on if it is activated in the on-board computer ( Y page 216).
vehicle is unlocked .T his is useful if you frequently travel on your own. X To change the setting: press and hold down the % and & buttons simultaneously for approximately six seconds until the battery check lamp ( Y page 79) flashes twice.
Keep batteries out of the reach of children. If a battery is swallowed, seek medical attention immediately. Checking the battery X Press the & or % button. The battery is working properly if battery check lamp : lights up briefly. If battery check lamp : does not ligh tu p briefly during the test, the battery is discharged.
Problems with the SmartKey Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions You cannot lock or unlock the vehicle using the SmartKey. The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged. X Try again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of the SmartKey.
Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The engine cannot be started using the SmartKey. The on-board voltage is too low. X Switch off non-essential consumers, e.g. seat heating or interior lighting, and try to start the engine again. If this does not work: X Check the starter battery and charge it if necessary ( Y page 302).
Unlocking and opening doors from the inside You can open a door from inside the vehicle even if it has been locked. You can only open the rear doors from inside the vehicle if they are not secured by the child-proof locks ( Y page 64). Only open the door when the traffic situation permits.
Automatic locking feature The vehicle is locked automatically when the ignition is switched on and the vehicle's wheels are turning at a speed in excess of 9 mph (15 km/h). You could therefore be locke do ut if: R the vehicle is being pushed. R the vehicle is being towed.
X Turn the mechanical key clockwise as far as it will go to position 1 . X Turn the mechanical key back and remove it. X Make sure that the doors and the trunk lid are locked. X Insert the mechanical key into the SmartKey. i If you lock the vehicle as described above, the fuel filler flap is not locked.
If somebody becomes trapped: R press the F button on the SmartKey, or R press the remote operating switch on the driver's door, or R press the closing or locking button on the trunk lid, or R pull on the trunk lid handle Opening/closing from outside Opening X Press the % button on the SmartKey.
Opening You can open the trun kl id automatically using the SmartKey or the handle in the trunk lid. X Press and hold the F button on the SmartKey until the trunk lid opens. or X If the trunk lid is unlocked, pull the trunk lid handle and let it go again immediately.
X Take the mechanical key out of the SmartKey ( Y page 78). X Insert the mechanical key into the trunk lid lock as far as it will go. X Turn the mechanical key counter-clockwise from position 1 as far as it will go to position 2 . The trunk is unlocked.

i You can continue to operate the side windows after you switch off the engine or remove the SmartKey. This function is available for up to five minutes or until the driver's or front-passenge rd oor is opened. Convenience opening You can ventilate the vehicle before you start driving.
X Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door handle. X Press and hold the & button until the side windows and the sliding sunroof or the panorama roof with power tilt/sliding panel are fully closed. X Make sure that all the side windows and the sliding sunroof or panorama roof with power tilt/sliding panel are closed.
G WARNING If you close a side window again immediately after it has been blocked or reset, the side window closes with increased or maximum force. The reversing feature is then not active. Parts of the body could be trappe d in the closing area in the process .
the closing process, the sliding sunroo fo pens again automatically. However, the automatic reversing feature is only an aid and does not relieve you of the responsibility of paying attention when closing the sliding sunroof. G WARNING The reversing feature does not react: R to soft, light and thin objects, e.
X Make sure that the sliding sunroof can be fully opened and closed again ( Y page 92). X If this is not the case, repeat the steps above again. ! If the sliding sunroof still cannot be opened or closed fully after resetting, contact a qualified specialist workshop.
This means that the reversing feature cannot prevent someone being trapped in these situations. There is a risk of injury. When closing make sure that no parts of the body are in the sweep of the roller sunblind.
G WARNING If you close the sliding sunroof again immediately after it has been blocked or reset, the sliding sunroof closes with increased or maximum force. The reversing feature is then not active. Parts of the body could be trapped in the closing area in the process .

settings with the memory function ( Y page 110). Seats Important safety notes G WARNING Children could become trapped if they adjust the seats, particularly when unattended. There is a risk of injury. When leaving the vehicle, always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.
! To avoid damage to the seats and the seat heating, observe the following information: R keep liquids from spilling on the seats. If liquid is spilled on the seats, dry them as soon as possible. R if the seat covers are damp or wet, do not switch on the seat heating.
The time period starts over again if, within these three minutes, you: R open or close a fron td oor R insert the SmartKey into the ignition lock or remove it from the ignition lock R switch the ignition on or off If the SmartKey is in position 2 in the ignition lock, the seats can be adjusted at any time.
Adjusting the head restraints manually Adjusting the head restraint height 2 X To raise: pull the head restrain tu pt o the desired position. X To lower: press release catch : in the direction of the arrow and push the head restraint down to the desired position.
X To lower: press release catch : and push the head restraint down unti l it is in the desired position. Installing/removing the rear seat head restraints 3 X Release the rea rs eat backrest and fold it slightly forwards ( Y page 265). X To remove: pull the head restraint up to the stop.
: To adjust the upper back support ; To adjust the contour of the backrest in the lumbar region = To adjust the lateral structure and support of the seat X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 2 in the ignition lock. i Repeat the adjustmen ti ft he seat no longer has the desired contour after a certain amount of time.
Problems with the seat heating Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The seat heating has switched off prematurely or cannot be switched on.
Adjusting the steering wheel manually G WARNING If the steering wheel is unlocked while the vehicle is in motion, it could change position unexpectedly. This could caus ey ou to lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk of an accident. Before starting off, make sure the steering wheel is locked.
G WARNING If you drive off while the EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature is making adjustments, you could lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk of an accident. Always wai tu ntil the adjustment process is complete before driving off. The EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature makes getting in and ou to fy our vehicle easier.
For this reason, always make sure of the actual distance from the road users traveling behind by glancing over your shoulder. The convex exterior mirrors provid e a larger field of vision. The exterior mirrors are automati cally heated afte rs tarting the vehicl ei ft he rear window defroster is switched on and the outside temperature is low.
If the "Fold in mirrors when locking" function is activated in the on-board computer ( Y page 218): R the exterior mirrors fold in automatically as soon as you lock the vehicle from the outside. R the exterior mirrors fold out again automatically as soon as you unlock the vehicle and then open the driver's or front- passenger door.
X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 2 in the ignition lock. X With the exterior mirror on the front- passenger side activated, use adjustment button = to adjust the exterior mirror. In the exterior mirror, the rear wheel and the curb should be visible.
X Adjust the sea t( Y page 100). X On the driver's side, adjust the steering wheel ( Y page 106 )a nd the exterio rm irrors ( Y page 107). X Briefly press the M memory button and the np ress storage position button 1 , 2 or 3 withi nt hree seconds.

Automatic headlamp mode G WARNING When the ligh ts witch is set to à , the low- beam headlamps may not be switched on automatically if there is fog, snow or other causes of poor visibility due to the weather conditions such as spray. There is a risk of an accident.
with the parking lamps and low-beam headlamps. X To switch on the front fog lamps: turn the SmartKey in the ignitio nl ock to position 2 or start the engine. X Turn the light switch to L or à . X Press the N button. The green N indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up.
High-beam headlamps X To switch on the high-beam headlamps: turn the SmartKey in the ignition lock to position 2 or start the engine. X Turn the light switch to L or à . X Press the combination switch beyond the pressure point in the direction of arrow : .
The active light function is a system that moves the headlamps according to the steering movements of the front wheels. In this way, relevant areas remain illuminated while driving. This allows you to recognize pedestrians, cyclists and animals. Active: when the lights are switched on.
system no longer detects any other vehicles, it reactivates the high-beam headlamps. The system's optical sensor is located behind the windshield near the overhead control panel. Switching Adaptive Highbeam Assist on/off X To activate: activate the Adaptive Highbeam Assist function using the on- board computer ( Y page 216).
