Problems with the engine Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The engine does not start. The starter motor can be heard. R There is a malfunction in the engine electronics.
Automatic transmission Important safety notes G WARNING It is dangerous to shift the automatic transmission out of parking position P or neutral position N if the engine speed is higher than idle speed. If your foot is not firmly on the brake pedal, the vehicle could accelerate quickly forward or in reverse.
Transmission positions B Park position Do not shift the transmission into position P ( Y page 160) unless the vehicle is stationary. The parking lock should not be used as a brake when parking. In addition to engaging the parking lock, you must always apply the parking brake to secure the vehicle.
Driving tips Kickdown Use kickdown for maximum acceleration. X Vehicles for USA: fully depress the accelerator pedal. The transmission shifts to a lower gear depending on the engine speed. X Vehicles for Canada: depress the accelerator pedal beyond the pressure point.
Steering wheel paddle shifters : Left-hand steering wheel paddle shifter ; Right-hand steering wheel paddle shifter In the automatic drive program, you can restrict or derestrict the shift range by using the steering wheel paddle shifters ( Y page 154).
automatic transmission protects against engine damage by not shifting down. i If the maximum engine speed for the shift range is reached and you continue to accelerate, the automatic transmission shifts up in order to prevent the engine from overrevving, even if the shift range is restricted.
i If you brake the vehicle or stop without shifting down, the automatic transmission will shift down to a gear that will allow the vehicle to accelerate or pull away again. i To avoid overrevving the engine when downshifting, the automatic transmission does not shift to a lower gear if this would result in the maximum engine speed being exceeded.
Problems with the transmission Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The transmission has problems shifting gear. The transmission is losing oil. X Have the transmission checked at a qualified specialist workshop immediately. The acceleration ability is deteriorating.
Direct skin contact with fuels and the inhalation of fuel vapors are damaging to your health. G WARNING Overfilling of the fuel tank may create pressure in the system which could cause a gas discharge. This could cause the gasoline to spray back out when removing the fuel pump nozzle, which could cause personal injury.
X Completely insert the filler neck of the fuel pump nozzle into the tank and refuel. X Only fill the tank until the pump nozzle switches off. i Do not add any more fuel after the pump stops filling for the first time. Otherwise, fuel may leak out. Closing X Replace the cap on the filler neck and turn clockwise until it engages audibly.
Problems with fuel and the fuel tank Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions Fuel is leaking from the vehicle. G Risk of explosion or fire The fuel line or the fuel tank is defective. X Turn the SmartKey to position 0 in the ignition lock immediately and remove it ( Y page 147).
Vehicles with automatic transmission X Apply the parking brake firmly. X Shift the transmission to position P . Using the SmartKey X Turn the SmartKey to position 0 in the ignition lock and remove it. The immobilizer is activated. i The SmartKey can only be removed if the transmission is in position P .
Driving tips General driving tips Important safety notes G WARNING Always remember that you must concentrate primarily on driving the vehicle. The driver's concentration must always be directed primarily at road traffic.
Exhaust check G WARNING Inhalation of exhaust gas is hazardous to your health. All exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide (CO), and inhaling it can cause unconsciousness and possible death. Do not run the engine in confined areas (such as a garage) which are not properly ventilated.
Limited braking performance on salt- treated roads G WARNING The layer of salt on the brake discs and the brake pads/linings may cause a delay in the braking effect, resulting in a significantly longer braking distance, which could lead to an accident.
You can find a description of Brake Assist (BAS) on ( Y page 64) or of BAS PLUS on ( Y page 64). Driving on wet roads Hydroplaning If water has accumulated to a certain depth on the road surface, there is a danger of hydroplaning occurring, even if: R you drive at low speeds.
Driving systems Cruise control Important safety notes Cruise control maintains a constant road speed for you. It brakes automatically in order to avoid exceeding the set speed. On long and steep downhill gradients, especially if the vehicle is laden, you must select shift range 1 , 2 or 3 in good time.
stored speed on downhill gradients by automatically applying the brakes. Storing the current speed or calling up the last stored speed G WARNING The set speed stored in memory should only be set again if prevailing road conditions and legal speed limits permit.
DISTRONIC PLUS Important safety notes DISTRONIC PLUS regulates the speed and automatically helps you maintain the distance to the vehicle detected in front.
G WARNING DISTRONIC PLUS distance is not a substitute for the active intervention of the driver. It does not detect pedestrians or stationary objects, nor can it detect, recognize or predict the road's course or the movements of vehicles in front.
Deactivate DISTRONIC PLUS: R when changing to the right lane, if the vehicles in the left lane are driving slower R when driving into a filter lane or an expressway exit R in complex driving situations, for example in construction sites on an expressway In these situations DISTRONIC PLUS will maintain the set speed if it is not deactivated.
In order to activate DISTRONIC PLUS, the following conditions must be fulfilled: R the engine must be started. It may take up to two minutes after pulling away before DISTRONIC PLUS is operational. R the parking brake must be released. R ESP ® must be active, but not intervening.
G WARNING If you depress the brake, DISTRONIC PLUS is deactivated unless your vehicle is stationary. DISTRONIC PLUS then no longer brakes your vehicle. In such cases, control the distance from vehicles travelling in front with the brake alone. You could otherwise cause an accident and thereby injure yourself and others.
You will see a warning message in the multifunction display if DISTRONIC PLUS is activated and: R the driver's door is open and the driver's seat belt is unfastened. R the engine is switched off. R the hood is opened. Shift to 'P' X Shift the transmission to position P to prevent the vehicle from rolling away.
X Briefly pull the cruise control lever towards you ? . X Remove your foot from the accelerator pedal. DISTRONIC PLUS is activated. The first time it is activated, the current speed is stored. Otherwise, it sets the vehicle cruise speed to the previously stored value.
X Select the Distance display function using the on-board computer ( Y page 210). Display when DISTRONIC PLUS is deactivated When DISTRONIC PLUS is deactivated, you will see the following in the multi.
DISTRONIC PLUS is automatically deactivated if: R you engage the parking brake. R you are driving slower than 15 mph (25km/h) and there is no vehicle in front, or if the vehicle in front is no longer detected. R ESP ® intervenes or you deactivate ESP ® .
The ability of DISTRONIC PLUS to detect vehicles when cornering is limited. Your vehicle may brake unexpectedly or late. Vehicles traveling on a different line DISTRONIC PLUS may not detect vehicles traveling on a different line. The distance to the vehicle in front will be too short.
Dynamic handling package with sports mode General notes The most important part of the dynamic handling package with sports mode is the adjustable damping system. This automatically controls and adapts the suspension to the respective driving situation.
R the driver's door is closed or your seat belt is fastened. R the parking brake is released. R the hood is closed. R the transmission is in position D , R or N . R DISTRONIC PLUS is deactivated. Activating the HOLD function X Make sure that the activation conditions are met.
The vehicle is not locked until the HOLD function is deactivated. i If the engine has been switched off, it cant be started again until the HOLD function has been deactivated. If there is a malfunction in the system or power supply while the HOLD function is activated, the Brake Immediately message is shown in the multifunction display.
: Example: sensors in the front bumper, left-hand side Range of the sensors General notes The sensors must be free of dirt, ice and slush. Otherwise, they may not function correctly. Clean the sensors regularly, taking care not to scratch or damage them ( Y page 288).

Notes on regularly inspecting wheels and tires G WARNING Damaged tires can cause tire inflation pressure loss. As a result, you could lose control of your vehicle. There is a risk of accident. Check the tires regularly for signs of damage and replace any damaged tires immediately.
R Do not drive with tires which have too little tread depth, as this significantly reduces the traction on wet roads (hydroplaning). R Replace the tires after six years at the latest, regardless of wear. This also applies to the spare wheel/emergency spare wheel.
G WARNING The wheel or tire size as well as the tire type of the spare wheel or emergency spare wheel and the wheel to be replaced may differ. Mounting an emergency spare wheel may severely impair the driving characteristics. There is a risk of an accident.
Tire pressure Tire pressure specifications G WARNING Tires with tire pressures that are too low or too high are associated with the following hazards: R they can burst, in particular if the vehicle is heavily laden or when driven at high speeds. R the tires can wear excessively and/or unevenly, which can severely impair tire traction.
