8 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Quick - start Guide This manual provides conceptual in formation about storage systems, det ailed instructions about using your system, and NETGEAR’s recommendations about c onfiguring, managing, and backing up your system. NETGEAR recommends that you read this manual to make the best use of your stor ag e system.

10 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Re a dy C LOU D ReadyCLOUD is an online service that you use to discove r and set up ReadyNAS storage systems on your network. Y ou can also use ReadyCLOUD to access and manage data on your ReadyNAS systems. In ord er t o u se R eadyCLOUD, your compu ter and storage system must have Internet access.

Local Setup Wizard The first time you access the lo cal admin page, a setup wizard pro mpts you to configure the basic settings of your Re adyNAS storage system.
13 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 The Local Admin P age The local admin p age is a browser-based interface that you use to configure and manage your ReadyNAS system. When you visit the local admin p age, the Overview screen displa ys, as shown in the following figure.
14 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Access the Local Admin P age Y ou can access the local admin page at any time by launching a web browser and visiting http s:// <hostname> . <hostname> is the name that you assi gned to your ReadyNAS system or the default hostname if you did not chan ge it.
15 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 R egister Y our System Y ou must register your product before you can use NETGEAR telep hone support. Register your ReadyNAS system at the NETGEAR Product Registration website. T o register your ReadyNAS system: 1. L ocate the serial number of the system.

17 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Basic V olume and RAID Concepts T o get the most out of your ReadyNAS sto rage system, it is helpful to underst and the basics of volumes and RAID. Un derstanding t hese concepts is th e first step to making good decisions about ho w to configure, manage, and use your ReadyNAS storage system.
18 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 X- R A I D 2 X-RAID2 is an auto-expandab le RAID technolog y that is available only on ReadyNAS systems. With X-RAID2, you do not need to kn ow intricate details about RAID to ad minister your system. X-RAID2 allows you to add stora ge space without reformat ting your drives or moving your data to ano ther location.

20 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 • RAID 5 . This RAID level also provides dat a redu ndancy , but it requires at least three disks. RAID 5 uses the capacity of on e disk to protect you from dat a loss if one disk fails. Y our data is distributed across multiple disks to improve disk pe rformance.
21 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Manage V olumes Change RAID Mode Y ou can change the RAID mode that your Ready NAS storage system uses. By defa ult, your system’s hard d isks are configured into a single X-RAID2 volume . Change from X -RAID2 to Flex -RAID Y our ReadyNAS system can easily change a volu me from X-RAID2 to Flex-RAID mode.
22 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Change from Fle x -RAID to X -RAID2 If your system cont ains only one volume, you c an easily switch from Flex-RAID t o X-RAID2. Data on the F lex-RAID volume is preserved when you switch to X-RAID2. If your system con tains mul tiple volumes, you must first reconfigure your dis ks into a single volum e.
23 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Change to a Differe nt RAID Level In Flex-RAID mode, you assign one of several RAID levels to your volume. A vailable RAID levels depend on the number of disks that you want the volume to include. For more information, see Flex-RAID on p age 19 .
24 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 The following summary informa tion is displayed next to each volume. Item Description Data The storage space that is consumed by data in MB, GB, or TB. Free The storage space that is available in MB, GB, or TB. Ty p e The con figured RAID level .

26 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Configure the Checksum F unction Checksum functions help detect data transmi ssion errors. The ReadyNAS uses a checksum function to improve accuracy and consistency when writing dat a to a volume. Y ou can enable or disable the checksum functio n on each volu me.
27 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 5. Click Apply . 6. Click OK . Y our changes are saved. Create a V olume T o create a volume and select the RAID level: 1. Select Sy stem > V olumes . 2. From the enclosure graphic, select the disks that you want to include in the new volume.
28 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Delete a V olume Before you delete a volume, make sure that you back up any dat a (folders and LUNs) that you want to save to another volume or an other storage device. T o delete a volume: 1. Select Sy stem > V olumes . 2. Select the volume th at you want to d elete.
29 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 The volume is deleted. The disks t hat were part of the volume become availab le again for other purposes (the color of the disks turns black). Expand Storage Capacity Y ou can expand the storage cap acity of an existing volume in two ways: • Horizont al exp ansion .
30 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 V ertically Expand a V olume Both X-RAID2 and Flex-RAID volumes support vert ical expansion. When you vertically expand a F lex-RAID volume, you must re place all disks in the volume with larger-capacity disks. Note: V ertical expansion is not availa ble for RAID 0 volumes.
31 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Y ou can continue to use your ReadyNAS s ystem while th e volume is resyncing. Resyncing can take several hours. T he s t ar t a nd co m p l et io n o f t he r es yn ci ng pr o c e s s is recorded in the system log (see System Logs on p age 201 ).
32 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Add P rotection to a V olume Add Protection to an X -RAID2 V olume X-RAID2 requires a minimum of two hard disks to provide prote ction against disk failure. If you have a one-disk ReadyNAS storage system and want protection from disk failure, you need to add a second disk that is at least as large as the first.
33 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 For more information about ho w to add a disk to your system, see the h ardware manual for your system, which is available at http://support.netgear .com/product/ReadyNAS-OS6 . 2. Select System > V olumes . The new disk is displayed in the enc losu re graph ic and is colored black.
34 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Maintain V olumes Scrub a V olume Scrubbing cleans and validates all dat a on a volume and checks the volume for errors. No data is dele ted. Folders, LUNs, and snap shots on the volume remain in tact. Note: Scrubbing is not an erase function.
35 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Defragment a V olume Over time, deletion, creation, and mo dification of files can fragment your data. Defragmenting a volume improves disk performanc e and reduces data fragmentation. T o defragment a volume: 1. Select Sy stem > V olumes .

LUNs 83 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 • Thick . All storage sp ace that you specify when you create a thick LUN is allo cated up front and the storage sp ace is reserved on the volume. Snapshot s, other LUNs, and shared folders on the volume cannot consume storage sp ace that is reserved.
LUNs 84 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 Manage L UNs Create a L UN After you create a volume (see Create a V olume on page 27 ), you ca n create LUNs on that volume. The following procedure describ es how to create a L UN from the Shares screen, but you can also create a LUN from the iSCSI screen.

T o access your storage system from an iSCSI-attached device, you need to create a LUN group and assign one or more LUNs to the LUN group. LUN groups allow you to o rganize LUNs and manage access rig hts to L UN groups.
LUNs 92 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 The default name is group X , where X is a number in sequential and ascending order . The T arget field is automatically populate d. The target is the string that an iSCSI client n eeds to be able to connect to the LUN. 4. Click Create .
LUNs 93 ReadyNAS OS 6.0 A pop-up screen displays. 4. From the drop-down list, select the LUN group to which you want to assign the LUN. 5. Click App ly .
