1 1. For your safety Read these simple guidelines before using your phone. Failure to comply with thes e guidelin es may be dangerous or illegal. 2 FCC/Industry Canada Notice Y our phone may cause TV or radio interference (for example, when using a telephone in close proximit y to receiv ing equipment). The FCC or Industry Canada can require you t o stop using your telephone if such interference cannot be eliminated.
3 2. Battery installation and char ging Before you can use your new phone, you need to attac h and charge the battery . Attaching the battery To attach the batte ry , place it on the back of the ph one as shown and s lide it towa rd the top of the phone u ntil it click s into place.
4 Prob lem s charg in g If your phone displays Not char ging , charging is suspended. Check that the battery is connected to an appro ved charging device. If the battery is very hot or cold, wait for a whi le; charging w ill automatica lly resu me after the battery i s restored to its normal operating state.
5 Removing the battery Note: Switch off the phone before removing the battery! 1 Press and hold the button at the top of th e battery . 2 Slide the battery toward the bottom of the phone. 3 Lift the battery off the phone. Important battery information • The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of t imes but it will eventually wear out.

7 Scroll keys The scroll key s are locate d to the right of the Navi™ ke y . Use the scroll keys to: • brows e menu s • move t he cursor (see page 1 1) to the right or the left • adjus t the e.
8 External antenna jack At the back of the phone , below the antenna, t here is a con- nector for an external antenna. The conne ctor may be pro- tected b y a rubber c a p. Remove th e cap before connecti ng a n external a ntenna. After re moving the a ntenna, replac e the cap.
9 Menu sho rtcuts When you select a menu item , numbers a ppear on the screen above the scroll bar . If you become familiar with these numbe rs, you c an use th em as shortcuts for acc essing different m enu items. For example, to access th e Phone setti ngs menu, you can simply pre ss Menu 4 2.

11 Entering letters and numbers Curs or The cursor is a blinking vertical line that appears on the scre en when you are enter ing text o r numbers . Characters you enter appear to the righ t of the cursor . Press to delete th e characte r to the le ft of the curs or .
12 Changi ng letter case Press the key (the Case ke y, shown on the phone diagram on this guide’s inside front cover) to switch betwe en upper- and lower-cas e letters.
13 Keyguard (loc king the k eypad) Using the Keyguard feature y ou can “lock” your p hone’ s ke ypad so that accident al keypress es have no effect. This is han dy when y our phone is in a pocket or purse. Note: K e yguard is not a sec urity feature and will n ot prevent unauthorized use of your phon e.
14 Notes about K eyguard • Wh en Keyguard is on, the only w ay to answer a call is to press An swer . Once t he call is t erminated , keyguard is reactivate d. • When Keyguard is on, press t he power key briefly to turn your phone’s lights on for 30 seconds.
15 4. Basic functions Turning the phone on Press and hold for one second. Note: Pressing briefly turn s your phone ’s lights on for fifteen seconds. If the phone asks for a lock code, see ‘Lock c ode’ on page 60. If the phone asks for a security code, see ‘Security code’ on page 60.
16 Checking signal strength Y our phon e operates on radio waves. Radio signal coverage is maintain ed by a wirele ss network, a nd the quality of calls on your phone depends on the strength of the wireless radio sig nal.
17 Ending a call Press En d . During the call, if y ou entere d any cha racters (for example, if you entered a few num bers to commu nicate with an automated att endant), th e charact ers will rema in on th e sc reen. To clear them , pr ess a nd ho ld .

20 Saving email addresses Y ou can as sociate an em ail ad dress w ith ea ch entry i n yo ur phone book. Later , when addressing a te xt message, you can quickly en ter the ema il address by s electing a nam e in y our phone book. 21 While p erforming other fu nctions Say you want to forward your phone calls to a number that is saved in your phone book. When you are prompted to enter th e phone nu mber , you c an find it instead—si mply press Search to access your phone book.
22 6. Settings This section describes some phone settings that allow you to customize your phon e to suit your pre ferences and that you probably won’t change very often. Automatic redial Use Menu 4 1 2 to turn this feature on or off. When th is feature is on and the wireless network is busy , your phone redials a number u p to three time s.

24 Ringin g option Use Menu 8 1 to tell your phone how to notify you th at you have a c all. Note : If yo u cho ose Beep once or Silent , the alarm clock only sounds a quiet beep. Ring The phone rings normally using th e currently sele cted ringing tone.
25 Warnin g an d game to nes Use Menu 8 6 to turn your phone’s warning an d game tones on or off. Warning tones are c reated by events su ch as confirmations, errors, power on, battery low , and recharge battery .
26 Headset Y our phone aut omaticall y selects this whe n it is connected to a headse t. Your ph on e remembers any changes you make to setting s in Menu 8, Tone s, and uses t hem the next time you c onnect the phone to a heads et. Handsfree Y our phone a utomatically selects this when it is connected to a handsfree device.
27 7. Emerg ency ca lls 1 If the phone is no t on, switch it on. 2 Press and hold for several seconds to ready the phone for calls. 3 Ke y in the emer gency nu mber for yo ur presen t locatio n (e.g. 9 1 1 or other official emergency num ber). Emergency numbers va ry by location.

29 8. Adva nced func tions Network feature sett ing Call forwardin g, call wa iting, and send caller ID are network services available through your servic e provider . These featu res do not appear in your ph one’s Network ser vices men u until you save the relat ed feature code(s) given to you by yo ur service provider .

38 System choices Y ou r phone will automa tically try to use a preferred system . If your phone fails to find a preferred system, then it will use the select ion you h ave chosen w ith this fe ature. Before you select a system, conta ct your s ervice provider to learn how these cha nges ma y affect yo ur phone bill.
39 Note : When roam ing i n som e syst ems, you may ne ed to ha ve a roaming agre ement in orde r to place a call. If no roam ing agreement has been arranged, a network operator may interrupt and request information on how you inte nd to pay for the ca ll.
40 Setting manua l touch tone length Use Menu 4 2 1 1 to set th e leng th of touch ton es crea ted when y ou press a ke y: Cont inuous sounds the tone for as long as you pres s and hold the ke y . Fixed sets the t one le ngth to one tenth of a second, regardless of how long you pre ss and hold the key .
41 9. Call log For your c onveni ence, th e call log ( Menu 3) s aves a lis t of phone numbers you have diale d, and can show you approx i- mately how much tim e you have spent on the phone. If y ou subscribe to th e caller ID network serv ice, the call lo g also records the phone numbers of missed calls and received calls.
42 Viewing the missed c alls list at any time Use Menu 3 1 to view the mis sed calls list at any tim e. T o dial a number , press Option s , then choose Call . Received calls If you su bscribe to the caller ID n etwork s ervice, your phone automatically stores the phone num bers of the 10 m ost recent calls you ’ve answe red.
43 Last call displays the duration of the last call, or current call if applicable. All cal ls disp lays the du ration of all calls since th e timers were last reset. Life ti mer displays the duration of all calls for the life of your phone and cann ot be reset.
44 1 0. Voice messages V oice ma il is a netw ork service that allow s callers t o record a mes sage when y ou canno t be reac hed. 60 14. Security features Access codes overview Access cod es consist of t he lock code and secu rity code. When you get you r phone, you should chan ge these codes from their defaults, write dow n the new codes, and keep them in a safe place away from t he phone.

62 The entry is added to your list of restricted numb ers. Y our phone can s ave up to 15 restric ted incoming numbers . Once y ou ente r 15 re stricted n umbers, the A dd restrict ion option is remo ved from the menu. This option is available again once you delete one or more phon e numbers from the restricte d list.

68 Charging times The table below displays approximate ba t tery charging times. These charging ti mes charge your phone to about 80% of it s capacity , and t he battery stre ngth indicat or stops scrolling. If you wish to obtain 1 00% battery capacity , please allow another two hours for “maintenance” charge .
69 The times shown are approximate, and represent a ra nge for either standby or talk times (not a combination of both). Battery operation times vary according to signal conditions, network parameters set by the service provider , and how you use your phone.
