9 1.4 P ositioning your router F or the best wireless signal transmission between the wireless router and the network devices c onnected to it, ensure that y ou: • Place the wir eless router in a cen tralized ar ea for a maximum wireless co verage f or the network devices.

11 1.5 Setup Requirements T o set up your wireless network, you need a comput er that meets the following sy stem requir ements: • Ethernet RJ-45 (LAN) port (10Base - T/100Base - T X/ 1000Base T X) • IEEE 802.
12 1.6 Router Setup 1.6.1 Wired c onnec tion IMPORT ANT! • Use a wired connection when setting up your wir eless router t o avoid possible setup pr oblems. • Before setting up y our ASUS wireless r outer , do the following: • If you are replacing an e xisting router , disconnect it from your network.
13 2. Using the bundled network cable, c onnect your computer to your wireless r outer’ s LAN por t. IMPORT ANT! Ensure that the LAN LED is blinking. 3 Using another network cable, c onnect your modem to your wireless rout er ’ s W AN por t. 4. Inser t your modem ’ s AC adapt er to the DC-IN port and plug it to a pow er outlet.

15 2 Getting star ted 2.1 Logging int o the W eb GUI Y our ASUS Wireless Router comes with an in tuitive w eb graphical user interface (GUI) that allows y ou to easily congur e its various featur es through a w eb brow ser such as Internet Explorer , Fir efo x, Safari, or Google Chrome.
16 2.2 Quick Internet Setup ( QIS) with A uto- detection The Quick Internet Setup (QIS) function guides you in quickly setting up your Internet connection. NO TE: When setting the Internet connec tion for the rst time , press the Reset button on your wireless r outer to r eset it to its factory default settings.
17 2. The wireless r outer automatically det ects if your ISP connection type is Dynamic IP , PPPoE , PPTP , L2TP , and Static IP . Key in the necessary information for your ISP c onnection t ype. IMPORT ANT ! Obtain the necessary information from your ISP about the Internet connection type.

20 2.3 C onnecting to your wireless netw ork After setting up your wir eless router via QIS, y ou can connect your computer or other smart devices to your wireless netw ork. T o connect to y our network: 1. On your comput er , click the network icon in the notication area to displa y the available wir eless networks.
21 3 C onguring the G eneral settings 3.1 Using the N etwork Map Network Map allows you to c ongure y our network ’ s security settings, manage y our network clients, and monitor y our USB device.
22 3.1.1 S etting up the wireless security settings T o protect your wireless network from unauthorized access , you need to configure its security settings. T o set up the wireless security settings: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to Gener al > Network Map .
23 5GHz security settings 3 . On the Wir eless name (SSID) field , key in a unique name for your wireless netw ork. 4. F rom the S ecurity Lev el dropdown list, select the encr yption method for y our wireless network. IMPORT ANT! The IEEE 802.11n standard pr ohibits using High Throughput with WEP or WP A- TKIP as the unicast cipher .
24 3.1.2 Managing your network clients T o manage your netw ork clients: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to Gener al > Network Map tab . 2 . On the Network Map screen, select the Client Status icon t o display y our network client’ s information.
25 3.1.3 Monitoring your USB device The ASUS Wireless Router provides two USB 2.0 ports for connecting USB devices or USB printer , to allow you to shar e files and printer with clients in your netw ork. NO TES: • T o use this feature , you need to plug a USB st orage device , such as a USB hard disk or USB ash drive , to the USB 2.
26 3. On the AiDisk Wizard field, click GO to set up an FTP server for Internet file sharing . NO TES : • F or more details , ref er to the section 3.
27 Safely removing the USB disk IMPORT ANT : Incorrect removal of the USB disk may cause data corruption. T o safely r emov e the USB disk: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to Gener al > Network Map . 2. In the upper right corner , click > Eject USB disk .
28 3.2 Crea ting a Guest Networ k The Guest Network pro vides temporary visitors with Internet connectivity via access to separate SSIDs or networks without providing ac cess to y our private network. NO TE: RT -AC66U suppor ts up to six SSIDs (three 2.

30 3.3 Using the T rac Manager 3.3.1 Managing QoS (Q uality of Ser vice) Bandwidth The Quality of Ser vice (QoS) allows y ou to set the bandwidth priority and manage net work trac.
31 4. On the user-dened QoS rules page, there are f our default online ser vice types – web sur f , HT TPS and le transfers . Select your preferred service, ll in the Sourc e IP or MA C , Destination P or t , Protocol , T ransferr ed and Priority , then click Apply .
32 NO TES • T o ll in the source IP or MA C, you can: a) Enter a specic IP address, such as "192.168.122.1" . b) Enter IP addresses within one subnet or within the same IP pool, such as “192.168.123.*” , or “192.168.*.*” c) Enter all IP addresses as “*.
33 • Under Upload Bandwidth table , set Minimum Reser ved Bandwidth and Maximum Bandwidth Limit for multiple network applications with dier ent priority levels. The percentages indica te the upload bandwidth rat es that are available f or specied network applications.
34 3.3.2 Monitoring T rac The trac monitor function allows y ou to acc ess the bandwidth usage and speed of your Internet, wired , and wireless networks . It allows y ou to monitor network trac ev en on a daily basis. Note: P ackets from the Internet are evenly transmitted to the wir ed and wireless devices .
35 3.4 Setting up Par ental C ontrol P arental C ontrol allo ws you t o contr ol the Internet access time. Users can set the time limit for a clien t’ s network usage. T o use the parental c ontrol func tion: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to Gener al > Par ental c ontrol .

37 3.5 Using the USB A pplication The USB Applications function provides A iDisk, S er vers C enter , Network Printer Server and Download Master submenus. IMPORT ANT! T o use the ser ver functions, you need to insert a USB storage device , such as a USB hard disk or USB ash drive , in the USB 2.
38 4. Creat e your domain name via the ASUS DDNS services, read the T erms of S er vice and then select I will use the ser vice and acc ept the T erms of ser vice and key in your domain name . When done, click Ne x t . Y ou can also select Skip ASUS DDNS settings then click Next to skip the DDNS setting.
39 3.5.2 Using Ser vers C enter The Ser vers Cen ter allows y ou to share the media les from the USB disk via a Media Ser ver director y , Samba share ser vice, or FTP share service. Y ou can also congure other settings f or the USB disk in the Ser vers Cent er .
40 • Enable iT unes Ser ver? : Select ON/OFF to enable/disable the iT unes Ser ver . • Media server directory : Selec t your media ser ver directory and click Apply to shar e les from the USB disk to media devices in the network. • Media Server Status : Displa ys the status of the media server .
41 T o delete an existing ac count: a) Select the account that y ou want to delet e. b) Click . c) When pr ompted , click Delete to conrm the acc ount deletion. T o add a folder: a) Click . b) Enter the folder name, and click A dd . The folder that y ou created will be added t o the folder list.

F rom the list of f olders, select the type of access permission that you wan t to assign f or specic folders: • R/W : S elect this option to assign read/write acc ess. • R: Select this option to assign read-only access . • No : Select this option if you do not want t o share a specic le folder .

47 3.6 Using A iCloud AiCloud is a cloud ser vice application that allo ws you t o save , sync, share , and access y our les. T o use AiCloud: 1. F rom Google Pla y Store or Apple S tore , download and install the ASUS AiCloud aspp to your smart device.
48 3.6.1 Cloud Disk T o crea te a cloud disk: 1. Inser t a USB storage device into the wir eless router . 2. T urn on Cloud Disk . 3. Go to https://www.asusnetw ork.net and enter the router login accoun t and password . F or better user experience, we recommend that y ou use Google Chrome or F iref o x .
49 4. Y ou can now start accessing Cloud Disk les on devices connected to the network. NO TE: When accessing the devices that are c onnected to the network, you need to ent er the device ’ s user name and password manually , which will not be saved b y AiCloud for security reason.
50 3.6.2 Smar t Acc ess The Smart Access function allows you t o easily access y our home network via your rout er ’ s domain name. NO TES: • Y ou can create a domain name f or your rout er with ASUS DDNS. F or more details, r efer t o section 4.3.
51 3.6.3 Smar t Sync T o use Smart Sync: 1. Launch AiCloud, click Smart Sync > Go . 2. Select ON to enable Smar y Sync. 3. Click Add new ac count . 4. Enter your ASUS WebSt orage accoun t password and select the director y that you wan t to sync with W ebStorage .
52 4 C onguring the Advanc ed Settings 4.1 W ireless 4.1.1 G eneral The General tab allows y ou to congur e the basic wireless settings. T o configur e the basic wireless settings: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to A dvanced Settings > W ireless > General tab .
53 4. In the Hide SSID eld, select Y es t o prev ent wireless devices from detecting your SSID . When this func tion is enabled, you would need to ent er the SSID manually on the wireless device to access the wir eless network.
54 • WP A/WP A2 Personal/WP A Auto-Personal : This option provides str ong security . Y ou can use either WP A (with TKIP) or WP A2 (with AES). If you select this option, you must use TKIP + AES encr yption and enter the WP A passphrase (network key).
55 4.1.2 WPS WPS ( W i-F i Pr otected Setup) is a wireless security standard that allows y ou to easily connect devices to a wir eless network. Y ou can congure the WPS function via the PIN code or WPS button. NO TE : Ensure that the devic es suppor t WPS.
56 Note: WPS suppor ts authentication using Open System, WP A-P ersonal, and WP A2-Personal. WPS does not suppor t a wireless network that uses a Shared Key , WP A-Enterprise , WP A2-Enterprise, and RADIUS encr yption method. 3. In the WPS Method eld, select Push Button or Client PIN code.
57 4.1.3 Bridge Bridge or WDS ( Wireless Distribution Sy stem) allows y our ASUS wireless rout er to connect to another wireless ac cess point exclusiv ely , preventing other wir eless devices or stations to ac cess your ASUS wireless r outer .
58 NO TE: In Hybrid mode, wireless devices connected to the ASUS wir eless router will only r eceive half the c onnection speed of the Access P oint. 4. In the Connect to APs in list eld , click Y es if you want t o connect to an Acc ess P oint listed in the Remote AP List.
59 4.1.4 Wireless M A C F ilter Wir eless MA C lter pr ovides contr ol over packets tr ansmitted to a specied MA C (Media Access C ontrol) address on your wir eless network. T o set up the Wir eless MA C lter: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to A dvanced Settings > W ireless > W ireless MA C F ilter tab .
60 4.1.5 R ADIUS Setting RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial In User Service) Setting provides an extra lay er of security when you choose WP A- Enterprise, WP A2-Enterprise , or Radius with 802.1x as your Authentication Mode . T o set up wireless RADIUS settings: 1.
61 In the Professional Settings screen, y ou can congur e the following: • F requenc y : Selec t which frequency band the professional settings will be applied to . • Enable Radio : Select Y es t o enable wireless networking. Select No to disable wireless networking.
62 • T ime of Day to Enable Radio : Y ou can specify a time range when wireless networking is enabled during the week. • Da te to Enable Radio (week end) : Y ou can specify which days of the w eekend wireless networking is enabled.
63 • W ireless multicast forwarding : Select Enable to allow the wireless rout er to f or ward multicast trac t o other wireless devices that support multicast.
64 4.2.2 DHCP S er ver Y our wireless r outer uses DHCP to assign IP addr esses automatically on your netw ork. Y ou can specify the IP address range and lease time for the clien ts on your network. T o congur e the DHCP server: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to A dvanced Settings > LAN > DHCP Ser ver tab .
65 NO TES: • W e rec ommend that you use an IP addr ess format of 192.168.1.xxx (where xxx can be an y number between 2 and 254) when specifying an IP address range . • An IP P ool Starting Address should not be grea ter than the IP P ool Ending Address .
66 2. On the Enable static rout es eld, choose Y es . 3. On the Static Route List , en ter the network information of other access points or nodes . Click the Add or Delete button to add or r emove a devic e on the list. 4. Click Apply . 4.2.4 IPT V The wireless r outer supports connection to IPT V ser vices through an ISP or a LAN.
67 4.3 W AN 4.3.1 Internet Connection The Internet Connection screen allow s you to c ongure the settings of various W AN connection t ypes. T o congur e the W AN connection settings: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to A dvanced Settings > W AN > Internet C onnection tab.
68 W AN C onnection T ype : Choose your Internet Ser vice Pr ovider type. The choices are Aut omatic IP , PPP oE , PPTP , L2TP or x ed IP . Consult your ISP if the r outer is unable to obtain a valid IP address or if y ou are unsur e the W AN connection type.
69 Check with your ISP and ll them in if requir ed. Host Name : This eld allows y ou to pro vide a host name for your rout er . I t is usually a special requirement fr om your ISP . If your ISP assigned a host name to y our computer , enter the host name here .
70 4.3.2 Port T rigger P or t range triggering opens a predetermined incoming port for a limited period of time whenever a client on the local ar ea network makes an outgoing connection to a specied port.
71 Enable P ort T rigger : Choose YES t o enable P or t T rigger . W ell-Known Applications : Select popular games and web ser vices to add to the P or t T rigger List. Description : Enter a short name or description for the service. T rigger P ort : Specify a tr igger por t to open the incoming por t.
72 4.3.3 Virtual Ser ver/P ort Forwarding P or t forwarding is a method to direct network trac from the Internet to a specic por t or a specic range of ports to a device or number of devices on your local network.
73 4. If the ser ver or game is not on the F amous Ser ver or F amous Game List , input the Port F orwarding information manually and click the Add button. 5. Click Apply . Enable P ort Forwarding : Choose Y ES to enable P ort F or war ding. F amous Ser ver List : Determine which type of ser vice you want to acc ess.
74 Local IP : Key in the client’ s LAN IP address. NO TE : Use a static IP addr ess for the local client to make port forwarding work properly . Refer to section 4.2 LAN for information. Local P ort : Enter a specic por t to receiv e forwarded packets.
75 Setting up a por t trigger is applicable if you use similar applications in two PCs during dier ent times of the day . Howev er , it is not suitable for ser vers behind a router because it relies on specic applications to make an out going connection before it can r eceive inc oming ones.
76 4.3.5 DDNS Setting up DDNS (Dynamic DNS) allows you to acc ess the router from outside your netw ork through the pro vided ASUS DDNS Ser vice or another DDNS ser vice. T o set up DDNS: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to A dvanced Settings > W AN > DDNS tab .
77 4.3.6 NA T Passthr ough NA T P assthrough allo ws a Virtual Private Network ( VPN) connection to pass through the rout er to the network clients. PPTP P assthrough, L2TP P assthrough, IPsec P assthrough and RTSP P assthrough ar e enabled by default.
78 4.4 IPv6 This wireless r outer supports IPv6 addressing, a system tha t suppor ts more IP addresses . This standard is not y et widely available . Contact your ISP if y our Internet ser vice suppor ts IPv6. T o set up IPv6: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to A dvanced Settings > IPv6 .
79 4.5 VPN Ser ver VPN ( V ir tual Privat e Network) provides a secur e communication to a remot e computer or r emote network using a public network such as the Internet. NO TE : Before setting up a VPN connection, you would need the IP address or domain name of the VPN ser ver you are trying to access .
80 4.6 F ire wall The wireless r outer can serve as a hardware r ewall f or your network. NO TE : The Fir ewall f eature is enabled by default. 4.6.1 G eneral T o set up basic F irew all settings: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to A dvanced Settings > Fir ewall > Gener al tab .
81 4.6.3 Keyword lter Keyword lter blocks acc ess to webpages c ontaining specied keywords. T o set up a ke yword lter: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to A dvanced Settings > Fir ewall > K ey word F ilter tab. 2. On the Enable Keyword F ilter eld, select Enabled .
82 4.6.4 Network Ser vices F ilter The Network Ser vices F ilter blocks LAN to W AN packet exchanges and restricts network clients from accessing specic w eb ser vices such as T elnet or FTP . T o set up a Networ k Ser vice lter: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to A dvanced Settings > Fir ewall > N etwork Service Filt er tab .
83 4.7 Administr ation 4.7.1 O peration Mode The Operation Mode page allow s you to select the appropriate mode for y our network. T o set up the opera ting mode: 1. F rom the na vigation panel, go to A dvanced Settings > Administr ation > Opera tion Mode tab.

87 5 Utilities NO TES: • Install the wireless router's utilities fr om the bundled support CD. • If Autorun is disabled, run setup .ex e from the r oot directory of the suppor t CD .
88 5.2 F irm war e Restor ation F irmwar e Restoration is used on an ASUS Wir eless Router that failed during its rmware upg rading proc ess. It uploads the rmwar e that you specify . The process takes about thr ee to four minutes. T o launch the rescue mode and use the F irmware Restor ation utility: 1.
89 5. Specify a rmwar e le, then click Upload . NO TE : This is not a rmware upgrade utility and cannot be used on a working ASUS Wir eless Router . Normal rmware upg rades must be done through the web in ter face. Ref er to Chapter 4: A dvanc ed Settings for more details.
