Before you begin··· Loading th e batteries Insert a coin in t o th e groove o f t he battery cover on the side o f the grip and op en the cover. Insert two 3V lithium batteries a s shown and replace th e cover. Us e Panasonic CR123A, Duracell DL123A, o r equivalent.
S et the power switch t o O N to check the batteries. The battery check indicator wi ll b e displayed fo r 1 2 seconds. Whe n " " is displayed, batteries a re OK. If " " flashes, ba tteries a re low, ha ve spares handy. I f " " i s displayed continuously, batteries should b e replaced immediately.

Insert the fi l m cartridge into t he camera. Always avo id direct su nlight wh en loading th e film. Open th e back cover by sliding th e bac k cover release toward the top o f the camera.
Make sure the film lies flat. Align the film leader with the red film loading indicator. Unless the film leader matches the film loading indicator, the film may n o t b e loaded. * D o n o t touch the l e n s inside t h e b o d y w i t h yo u r fingers o r the fi l m leader.
Close t he ba ck cover. Th e film automatically advances to the first frame. S e t the pow er switch to ON t o mak e sure that the exposure counter shows "1". I f fi lm i s improperly loaded, the LCD panel w i l l display a blinking " E " .
The camera automatically rewinds t h e film when y o u reach t h e end o f a roll. Th e exposure counter o n th e LC D panel co u n t s down a s th e film i s rewinding. * Th e fin al reading o f t he exposure co unt er before rewinding may b e mor e than t he number o f exposures specified for the film.

S e t t h e power switch t o O N . * W h e n t h e camera i s n o t i n us e , always s e t the power switch t o O F F s o t h a t th e shutter cannot b e activated accidentally. While looking through t h e viewfinder, a i m th e ca m e r a a t yo u r subject.
Us e th e zo o m button t o adjust the si z e o f yo u r subject i n t h e frame, (telephoto o r w ide-angle) Th e shutter release cannot b e operated while zooming. Press th e "T " (Telephoto) o n th e z o o m button t o zo o m i n . (T h e maximum f oc a l length i n t h e "T " position i s 76mm.
Hold th e camera correctly. I t i s particularly important to hol d th e camera ste ady when shooting at a longer focal l ength; u se both hands f o r maximum stability.
I f t h e autofo cus indicator is blinking, correct focus w as not achieved. I f this occurs, let go o f th e shutter release button. Ma ke sure your subject is within th e autofocus frame in the center o f the vi ew fi nd e r and press the shutter release button halfway again.

If the subject is nearer than 0.6m(2ft), t h e autofocus indicator (green) w il l blink a n d the shutter will n o t release. However, th e shutter ma y sometimes be released erroneously when the subject is extremely close t o t h e camera.
Confirm flash charge b y pressing th e shutter release button halfway. Th e flash i n dicator (orange) w i l l light u p i n t h e v i e w f in de r wh e n th e flash i s charged. Compose yo u r s h o t a n d press t h e shutter release button. Th e flash will fi r e automatically.
F ro m 0.6m(2ft) to 1.6m(5.2ft), the flash strength is controlled automati- cally a s shown. T his s oft flash mechanism prevents pic tur es from being overexposed. So ft flash: Overexposed (with conventional flash). Properly exposed (w i t h soft flash).
Color negative film offers the widest exposure latitude, compensating f or over and underexposure m or e readily th a n other films. T h e flash working range shown below is optional for color negative film. A ctual flash working range for o ther f i l m type may vary.
Confirm flash charge by p ressing the s h u t t e r release b u tt o n halfway. T h e flash indicator (orange) w i l l light up in th e viewfinder whe n t he flash is charged. * I f the backlit subject i s ve ry small a n d d o e s n o t fully cover the aut ofoc us frame, the flash may not fi re automatically.
Advanced shooting techniques Macro photography Macro photography is possible at any focal length. Without performing any special operations, it is possible to take close-up pictures up t o a distance o f 0.6m(2ft). Focal length o f 3 8m m a t 0.6m(2ft).
Focal length o f 76mm at 0.6m(2ft). Focus lock Using the focus lock, y o u r subject will b e in focus even if it is not i n the center o f the picture.
Wh e n t h e ma i n subject i s no t i n t h e autofocus frame, u s e the focus l oc k . Otherwise t h e camera wi l l focus o n th e background a n d th e subject w il l not b e i n focus. Position your subject in the autofocus frame a n d press t h e shutter re l ea s e button halfway.
While keeping th e shutter r e l ea s e button pressed halfway, change the position o f your subject in the viewfinder t o achieve the desired composition.
S e t the camera firmly i n position. Press t h e SUBJECT button u n ti l i s displayed o n th e LC D panel. Press th e shutter release button halfway t o focus. W h e n correct f oc u s has be e n achieved, th e autofocus indicator (green) will light up i n t h e viewfinder.
* Du ri ng selftimer operation, the focus an d exposure will b e locked when th e s h u t t e r release b u t t o n is pressed. * T o cancel t he selftimer after it h as b e en activated, press the SUBJECT button or se t the power switch to OFF. Press th e shutter release button fully to start the selftimer.
Press th e SUBJECT button until " C " is displayed on the L CD panel. The camera w i l l shoot repeatedly a s lo ng a s the shutter r el ea s e button is pressed. Out side the shooting range (P. 18) th e shutter will automatically stop. Continuous mode U se continuous m o d e to shoot a continuous series o f pictures a t approx.

Auto-zoom mode working range: fr om 1. 3m (4.3ft) to 2. 6m (8.5ft). * Outside the r anges a s shown, au to- zoom may not operate. * Even in the auto-zoom mode, the z oo m button c a n b e operated to override th e automatic zo o m setting.

I n th i s mode, t h e flash always fires regardless o f available light. U s e this m o d e to r daylight shooting i n backlit conditions t o co mpensate for backlighting which m a y ma k e t h e subject appear to o dark. B y using t h e FILL-IN mode, t h e subject w i l l b e properly li t b y the flash.
Press the FLASH button t o s e t the flash mode to F I LL - I N. wil l light o n t he L C D panel. MULTI flash Us e t h i s mode, whe n yo u want t o segment a m otion sequence - such as a gol f swing - in 1 frame. Fo r best results use together with pre-focus mode.
